Liu Cuier didn't give Ergaizi a chance to resist at all, grabbing his tattered cotton-padded jacket sleeve and striding towards the front yard of the health center.

Erga's feet were so hot they dared not touch the ground, and he could only be dragged along, limping along. But he never stopped muttering, sometimes telling her to be gentle, sometimes cursing her for being too reckless. Liu Cui'er was so angry that she would suddenly turn around and glare at him fiercely every now and then.

Not far away, Dazhuang was leaning against the earthen wall outside the front gate of the health center, watching this scene with a smile that never stopped.

He and Ergaizi grew up wearing the same pair of open-crotch pants, and Dazhuang knew this guy's character better than anyone else.

He's a chatterbox, loves to brag, and is reckless. If he has a little money in his pocket, he'll act like he owns the place. He can argue with anyone and have a heated exchange.

If you found an ordinary, honest, and decent girl, she really wouldn't be able to control this prickly guy. But judging from Liu Cuier's attitude, she'll probably be able to tame this scoundrel in the future.

Thinking of this, Da Zhuang's smile deepened.

But as he was laughing, for some reason, another face suddenly popped into his mind.

The smile on Da Zhuang's face slowly faded.

He reached into his cotton-padded jacket pocket, pulled out a cigarette case, took one out and put it in his mouth. After lighting it with a match, he lowered his head and took a deep drag.

The smoke was slowly exhaled through the nostrils and was quickly dispersed by the cold wind of early spring.

To say that I had no feelings for Liu Mei would be a lie.

If he really didn't like her, he wouldn't bother going to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy fabric and a new, crisp suit of polyester just to see her.

He would never again find his mind involuntarily flashing back to her fair and gentle face whenever he had a moment to smoke, causing his chest to tighten.

Liking something is one thing.

When it comes to settling down and starting a family, Dazhuang always feels a thick layer of uncertainty, unable to grasp the reality of life, and his mind is filled with unease.

I am a native farmer from Kaoshantun.

Liu Mei, however, was a girl who grew up in the city and had a stable job.

Although life at home has changed drastically in the past two years thanks to Shanhe, with money in hand, no worries about food or clothing, and the ability to hold one's head high when going out, having money is one thing, and actually living a good life is another.

Her parents are respectable people who receive government-subsidized food rations. They worked hard to raise their daughter, so why would they let her go back to Kaoshantun with a country man and suffer?

Will people feel inferior just because they hear he has a rural household registration, even before they've entered the door?

Even though Liu Mei is now single-mindedly pursuing him and has even shamelessly confessed her feelings, she is still young.

When she finally faces her parents' threats of suicide, the gossip of relatives and neighbors, and the stark differences in social customs between the city and the countryside, how long can this seemingly fragile girl endure the love in her heart in reality?

If one day she can't withstand the pressure and regrets it, or feels wronged, how can I make up for her for the rest of my life?

"Oh shit……"

Da Zhuang took a deep drag on his cigarette, feeling increasingly uneasy as he pondered the situation.

Or should I wait until I've settled this mess with Ga Zi before making a proper trip to the city in a couple of days?

Who cares what her parents think!

A grown man should stand tall and upright; he can't let himself get scared before he's even stepped into someone else's home.

This thought forcefully pushed itself up from the very marrow of my bones.

"Big Zhuang?"

A clear, slightly surprised voice suddenly drifted over from the side and behind.

Da Zhuang's hand holding the cigarette suddenly trembled, as if someone had stabbed him hard in the back. His muscles tensed instantly, and he froze on the spot.

Da Zhuang was stunned for several seconds, his heart pounding wildly, before he turned his neck slowly, somewhat bewildered.

Not far away, a pretty figure wearing a beige wool coat and a red plaid scarf stood at the bottom of the steps. She was holding a clean aluminum lunchbox and staring at him with wide, watery eyes, both surprised and delighted.

The thick smoke in Da Zhuang's mouth was so frightening that he didn't think to spit it out for a long time, and his throat felt itchy from holding it in.

"Liu...Liu Mei?!"

Looking at his silly expression, with smoke coming out of his mouth and his eyes glazed over, Liu Mei burst out laughing, her eyes curving into crescent moons.

"Dazhuang, what are you doing here?"

Da Zhuang's head was buzzing, and his usual goofy side came rushing back. He scratched the back of his head and subconsciously asked in a silly tone:

"No...no, what are you doing here?"

Liu Mei was taken aback by his question, then chuckled and pointed to the row of red brick houses next to the health center, which housed the family quarters.

"I live in the staff quarters behind this building. My parents are both senior doctors at this health center. Before I was assigned to work at the city hospital, they used to come and go here every day."

At this point, Liu Mei took two small steps forward and tilted her head to look at him:

"On the contrary, what are you doing coming all the way from Kaoshantun and blocking the entrance to our residential compound? You didn't come here just to see me, did you?"

Looking at Liu Mei's pretty face, slightly flushed and smiling in the cold wind, Da Zhuang's heart felt as if it had been hit hard by something, and it pounded wildly.

His first instinct was to scratch the back of his head and laugh it off, as he usually did, and say that he had brought Ergaizi to see a doctor.

But just as the words reached his throat, he suddenly remembered the fierce determination he had shown while smoking earlier—a grown man shouldn't back down before even taking the first step, right?

Da Zhuang swallowed hard, straightened his broad and sturdy shoulders, and blushed on his dark face, swallowing back the excuse that was about to come out of his mouth.

He raised his bloodshot yet remarkably bright eyes, staring intently at Liu Mei, and spoke in a deep but incredibly clear voice:

"Yes... I came to see you."

Liu Mei was clearly taken aback.

She seemed completely unprepared for Dazhuang, this blockhead who usually couldn't utter a single coherent word when he saw her, to admit it so directly today.

But he only paused for a moment.

The next second, her watery eyes lit up, and the smile that had been just hanging on the corners of her mouth seemed to be unable to be suppressed any longer, spreading little by little across her fair face.

A chilly early spring breeze gently lifted a corner of the red plaid scarf around her neck.

Liu Mei stood there watching Da Zhuang.

She smiled, her eyes crinkling.
