Chapter 33 The Echoing Wall
Chris soon arrived at Pony Street by heading west along Nottingham Street.
It's much livelier here than Nottingham Street, but it's not exactly bustling either; it certainly can't compare to Enclave Street.
This is a place where most ordinary people from the surrounding neighborhoods often come to stroll around.
This street has a church, a hospital, a library, and is next to Rom Central Park, which, although not large, is one of the few green spaces in the city open to the public.
Chris can do everything he needs to do today right here on this street.
When he passed by the Rom City Library, he first returned the book "The Shadow of the Iron Key" and got his deposit back.
Afterwards, he went to a pharmacy near Wayne Hospital and bought a bottle of the same painkiller he had previously taken.
Finally, we arrived at a church of the Holy Spirit Church on Puni Street.
The exterior of this church is similar to Chris's stereotypical image of churches from his previous life, mainly in a Gothic style with some elements from the Holy Spirit mythology.
It's noon now, and lunchtime hasn't passed yet.
Standing outside the church, Chris didn't see many people going in or out.
After a moment's thought, he slowly walked toward the church.
As Chris passed by the church entrance, he noticed the donation box next to it. After thinking for a moment, he took out a 10-copper-kroner coin from his wallet and dropped it in.
He didn't see anyone dressed like a church person guarding the entrance.
There were only two simply dressed people sitting cross-legged outside the church, quietly with a book that looked about an inch thick spread out on their laps, silently reciting something.
Chris glanced at the pages and guessed it was some kind of scripture published by a church.
The church was not small, and once inside, Chris immediately felt that the space was unusually spacious.
He estimated that the church's ceiling height was definitely over twenty meters.
Upon entering the church, Chris couldn't help but look up.
Inside the church, the walls and ceiling were covered with exquisitely carved reliefs, interspersed with many beautifully painted details that may have been used to fill the gaps between the reliefs.
The atmosphere here was nothing like the monotonous color scheme and oppressive atmosphere that Chris had envisioned.
As expected, stereotypes are unreliable in another world.
He could sense that the murals and paintings seemed to be telling some mythological stories, but he didn't know much about the myths and legends of this world, so he couldn't understand them very well.
After a brief look, Chris turned his gaze away.
He looked ahead and saw the area directly opposite the church entrance. What was carved there was not a statue of a god, but a huge stone wall carved from a single gray stone slab.
The stone wall is carved with many abstract sculptures resembling waves or clouds, and many symbols that Chris cannot understand are engraved on the stone wall.
Chris knew that this must be the icon of the Holy Spirit Echo Wall enshrined in this church.
His gaze remained fixed ahead as he slowly walked towards the statue.
The symbols carved on the stone wall became clearer and clearer in his eyes.
He vaguely gleaned something from it, but in the blink of an eye, it vanished from his mind.
When Chris was less than two meters away from the stone wall, a mature voice with a hint of weariness suddenly called out to him.
"Sir, please do not approach the icon any further."
Upon hearing this, Chris immediately stopped and turned to look.
A man wearing a gray robe, with short, graying hair but few wrinkles on his face, stood less than five meters away from Chris, quietly watching him.
The other person was also wearing a silver-white metal ring hanging from a thin linen cord on their chest.
The collar, cuffs, and hem of that gray robe were subtly decorated with delicate gold lines.
Seeing this, Chris knew that the other person must be a clergyman of this church. He quickly took off his top hat, smiled, and nodded slightly to the other person with a hint of apology.
The other party responded with a polite smile.
He walked up to Chris, a barely perceptible glint of scrutiny in his eyes, and then said, "I am the pastor here. This gentleman can call me Frank."
"Hello, Pastor Frank, my name is Chris. I apologize for my presumptuous behavior just now." Chris pulled his top hat up to his chest and nodded slightly again.
Seeing this, Frank's smile widened, and he immediately replied, "Mr. Chris, there's no need to apologize for this."
As he spoke, Frank turned to face the giant gray stone statue beside him, lowered his head slightly, and moved his lips rapidly, as if he were reciting some scripture in an inaudible whisper.
Seeing this, Chris could only stand aside and wait quietly.
Fortunately, after only a few seconds, the other person straightened up and turned to Chris again, saying, "The Holy Spirit will forgive every believer's unintentional mistake."
"But I am not a believer here yet."
Chris silently responded in his mind, looking at the other person while maintaining a reasonable smile.
"Is this Mr. Chris's first time visiting this church?" Pastor Frank suddenly asked.
Chris didn't hide anything about it and replied, "Yes, Pastor Frank, this is my first time entering the Church of the Holy Spirit."
"What made Mr. Chris walk into this church today?" Frank continued to ask.
Chris then told Pastor Frank that he had been plagued by nightmares and headaches for a whole year.
This is his main purpose for coming here today.
On his way here, he had inquired about the local church of the Holy Spirit Church, which enshrines the Wall of Echoes of the Holy Spirit, and it was a legitimate unit under the jurisdiction of the Religious Affairs Administration Bureau of the Im Empire.
According to the information Chris received from his dream, there should also be extraordinary individuals within these Holy Spirit churches.
I just don't know if this pastor who calls himself Frank is really him.
When Chris woke up at noon today and tried to enter that mysterious space, he discovered that he seemed to be able to activate a special perceptual ability called spiritual vision at any time.
Through this method, he can see the subtle spiritual aura emanating from other people.
Perhaps through this method, we can see how the spirituality of Pastor Frank differs from that of ordinary people.
But at this moment, Chris wouldn't be so reckless as to do such a thing.
Therefore, it becomes impossible to determine whether the other party is an extraordinary individual.
After listening to Chris's description, Reverend Frank frowned slightly, a look of doubt on his face. Then he looked at Chris with a hint of sympathy in his eyes and said, "You must have suffered quite a bit, Mr. Chris."
