Forests Don't Support Idle Goblins
Chapter 145 Just keep pretending.
"Sister Evita, did you really find the unicorn?" a centaur asked, mustering his courage.
Several of the younger centaurs in their tribe were persuaded by Evita to secretly follow her to see the unicorn.
Evita nodded, saying with absolute certainty, "Yes, didn't you just see that strand of long golden hair too?"
After saying that, she looked back in the direction of the village. This idea was something she came up with on the spur of the moment. To be honest, it was too much to ask a centaur to come up with a perfect solution on the spur of the moment, so after thinking it over, she could only resort to this last resort.
When she saw that short sentence in the hut, she immediately understood what Sharl meant. This goblin leader had actually guessed her father's thoughts, knowing that the other party was unlikely to believe what she said. However, if more people in the tribe had seen the unicorn and no other accidents occurred, perhaps her father would agree to meet Sharl.
That way, the plan can be coordinated, which will be beneficial to the migration of their own ethnic group.
So when her companions from the tribe came to find her, she deliberately asked about the situation in the tribe. After learning that a female centaur had given birth that day, Evita immediately said she would go to help. No matter what Orek said at the door, she insisted on going. In the end, Orek had no choice but to follow her.
While helping out, Evita also began to tell her companions about her experience of seeing the unicorn. Of course, she omitted a lot of details, including the goblin incident, and only mentioned that she was guided to see the unicorn in the forest and brought back a tuft of its long hair.
Ultimately, she successfully piqued the interest of her companions, after all, the unicorn had been missing for a long time, and Evita had brought back some very sweet honey, something the centaur tribe had never had before.
Taking advantage of the chaos following the birth of the centaurs, Evita successfully led her companions away from Orek's attention. She then immediately set off south, heading straight for the territory of the Shard.
Soon, they were getting further and further away from the village in the forest. Just as Evita was on guard for the possibility of cannibals patrolling around, a cloth bag was thrown at her feet from the shadows.
"Who goes there?" An alert centaur swiftly fired an arrow, which struck a nearby tree.
Evita immediately reassured her companions, telling them they were her friends. Then she picked up the cloth bag and looked at the note inside: "Follow Broken Tooth; he will lead you."
"It's that goblin," Evita whispered, then looked around and immediately heard several "cooing" bird calls coming from ahead.
"Let's go, the unicorn has sent someone to guide us," she said, turning to her companions, and then took out some honey to share with everyone.
Heading south for a long time, Evita hadn't felt how far the journey was when she returned to the village before, but now that she was leaving the village again, she felt that the road took so long.
"Sister Evita, how much further?" a young centaur asked. Many of them were already a little scared, after all, this was the first time they had left the village so far.
"We're almost there," Evita could only say with a smile. She took out a compass from her bag and checked the direction. Although centaurs had strong forest survival skills, she couldn't be sure if they had gone astray. She could only trust the goblin ahead.
After some time, just as the companions were tentatively asking if they should go back, a rustling sound came from the bushes ahead, and then several goblins came out from behind the trees.
"Goblins!" the centaurs shouted immediately, and began to draw their bows and nock their arrows. Evita had to stand in front of them with her arms outstretched to stop them from firing their arrows.
"They are friends," Evita said loudly, but the young centaurs looked at her suspiciously, not believing her at all.
"She's right, I'm a friend." A short, bald goblin walked over and greeted him with a smile.
"Sister Evita, you're lying to us. There are no unicorns here, only these evil goblins," one of the centaurs cried out. They clearly still hated this evil race, especially after witnessing the true face of that so-called "Overseer."
"No, she didn't deceive you." Charles smiled and tried to get closer to explain, but with a "whoosh," an arrow "thudded" into the ground in front of him, less than half a meter away.
Charles immediately stopped in his tracks; it seemed the arrow carried a strong warning.
"Clatter clatter," a strong male centaur emerged from behind the tree, holding a longbow with arrows nocked, and pointed it warily at the goblins.
"Brother Orek!" Evita exclaimed. She thought she had successfully shaken off him, but now it seemed she had clearly underestimated his tracking ability, after all, he was one of the best hunters in the tribe.
"Evita, what you're doing is too dangerous." Orek slowly walked to the centaurs, his eyes fixed on the goblins in front of him, afraid that they might do something.
"Brother Orec, listen to me, they really are friends," Evita said anxiously, trying to make him understand her intentions.
Unfortunately, these centaurs harbored deep prejudices against goblins. They all looked at Shire warily, completely disbelieving what Evita said.
"Okay, I knew it would turn out like this." Charles shrugged, then turned and walked back. Not long after, he dragged a white creature over.
"So, now you know Evita wasn't lying to you, right?" He pulled the white animal over and said with a smile.
All the centaurs were surprised and put down their bows and arrows. They stared silently at the unicorn standing next to the goblin, its white body shining like a beam of light in the sunlight, and its long fur, like golden brocade, fluttering in the wind.
"Just as I thought." Evita let out a long breath, then turned to look at her people who were frozen in place. However, she calmly did not urge them. She had experienced such moments before, and looking at their appearance now, she could imagine herself in the past.
Bored, she took a small piece of honey out of her pocket and popped it into her mouth. At the same time, she looked at the goblin smiling and spreading his arms in the distance and whispered, "Keep pretending."
…………
"General, are we really going to grant the centaur's request?" Inside the Evilthroat army tent, a goblin asked General Evilthroat, who was sitting in the middle.
"Of course not," Evil Throat said, narrowing his eyes. "Why would I agree to such a request?"
He had just met with the centaur chieftain, who had come to see him on his own initiative to persuade the Evilthroat Army to reduce its exploitation of the centaur tribe and guarantee their basic living necessities.
But Evil Throat did not grant the other party's request, and instead gave a perfunctory reply.
"Send word to the goblins that he's doing a good job and to continue doing so." Evilthroat touched his red nose. "And he must keep a close eye on the centaur's movements. If they dare to sneak away, inform me immediately."
"You must also be ready at any time to prevent those goblins from hiding in their burrows all day. If anything happens, we need to immediately surround and wipe out those centaurs."
"This time, we must use the elderly, weak, sick, and disabled of their tribe to restrict the movements of the young and strong, and eventually wipe them out in one fell swoop."
"Yes, General," several goblins around him immediately replied.
"We, the Evilthroat Army, don't need vassals, we only need slave soldiers. These centaurs are too smart; we can only let them stay with those goblins," Evilthroat said with a sneer.
Given the current situation, the centaurs are unlikely to resist. After all, the primary concern of all races in the forest is reproduction, and the centaur clan does not want to fight the Evilthroat Army head-on. They also cannot guarantee that they can defeat the goblin slave soldiers who have drunk the "holy water".
If the three scars intensify their exploitation, the centaur tribe will eventually have no choice but to migrate secretly, which plays right into the hands of the earth goblins.
The migration of any race is a massive undertaking. A race may have able-bodied men, but it also has the elderly, the weak, the sick, and the disabled. Once the Evil Throat Army discovers that the centaurs have begun to migrate, they can immediately pounce on them like hungry tigers and encircle and annihilate them.
In the wild, the centaur migration was unable to mount an effective counterattack or defense, which allowed the Evilthroat army to capture the centaurs at minimal cost.
Then, by having the goblins and centaurs in the encampment monitor and fight each other, the goblins can reap the benefits.
"What's the situation with the Goblin Kingdom to the north?" General Evilthroat asked, looking at his goblins.
"There's been no movement these past few days, and no goblins have come out," a goblin immediately reported, as they had been constantly monitoring the situation in the north.
"They've been acting strangely lately. Judging by the timing, another horde of goblins should be emerging." Evilthroat rubbed his nose. "Take some men and head north for the next few days to see what they're up to."
"Yes, General."
…………
"See? I didn't lie to you, did I?" Evita raised her head and introduced the fortress in front of her to the centaurs.
After seeing the unicorn, they all fell silent. After all, not a single centaur believed that their tribe's totem would come running to find a bunch of goblins.
Moreover, these goblins didn't seem to like the unicorn very much.
That was their totem, a legend passed down for generations, and now it was lying asleep on a clump of weeds in the goblin fortress.
“They’ll get used to it,” Charles said with a smile, then asked Evita, “So your father probably doesn’t believe what you’ve been through.”
Evita nodded, then looked at her people.
"Don't worry, after they've experienced everything here, they'll be able to convince even more people when they go back," Charles said with a smile.
