Forests Don't Support Idle Goblins
Chapter 317: A Review of the Harvest
"Are you bald?" Charles tilted his head, frowning as he looked at the goblin in front of him, who was shivering from the cold and had half of his face swollen. What was even more interesting was that there was a black shoe print on the side of the goblin's face that wasn't swollen.
"I am," Baldy said vaguely, because he was so focused on running for his life that he bumped into a wooden stake, which made his speech unclear and caused the swelling and pain around his mouth to flare up every time he spoke.
"What happened to you?" Charles asked, looking the man up and down. He looked much worse than when he was captured last time. "Didn't you bring a lot of goblins this time? When you were trying to persuade me to surrender, those goblins said there were more than 100 petrified lizards. How come you look so pathetic now?"
Baldy's lips trembled, unable to utter a single word for a long time. He wanted to curse the goblins he had sent out to persuade them to surrender, all that nonsense about "those guys are already scared and just stubbornly refuse to surrender because they think we sent too few people" and "once the army arrives, these goblins will definitely surrender at the first sign of trouble." He also wanted to take a wooden club and beat the cavemen of the other army to death. When dividing the troops, he repeatedly instructed them, "As soon as you see flying goblins in the sky over here, charge out immediately," and "As a surprise force, just charge at the enemy's rear." But where were they? He didn't even see a hair on the head of the surprise force.
"They're all idiots," he thought with a hint of resentment as he glanced back at the feathered serpent kingdom goblins sitting on the ground in the distance. These guys were sitting there listlessly, looking nonchalant, as if to say, "We've just been defeated. When will we be incorporated into your race?" There were also quite a few goblins running around in the forest, waiting for the centaur "heavenly soldiers" to come to them and bring them to this gathering point.
Seeing Baldy's appearance, Sharl glanced at the goblins in the distance. The goblins sat huddled together on the ground, many clinging to each other for warmth. There was no resentment or fear in their eyes. Many goblins were watching Grass, who was sitting in the distance gnawing on jerky. The aroma of the jerky was enticing them. If Red Eyes hadn't been patrolling the area with his men armed with weapons, these goblins might have risked their lives to snatch the snacks from Grass because of hunger.
"How many goblins did you bring this time?" Charles asked with a smile.
Upon hearing the sound, Baldy turned around, his lips trembling, and did not answer. On one hand, he did not want to talk, and on the other hand, he could not tell. With several goblins counting on their fingers, it was impossible to count the number of people.
"Forget it, I doubt you can answer that anyway. I'll count them after we've caught all the goblins." Charles shrugged. He'd find out after the ankle-touching ceremony was over anyway.
He was even happier than the captured goblins than the petrified lizards he had caught. Although some of them were injured, he thought that if they were healed, he might be able to tame them in the future.
Currently, within the tribe, elephants help build houses, mimics provide grease, astral hounds guard the house, brain-eating monsters are used for petting, slimes handle garbage, and giant ants are used for transport and riding. Compared to these creatures, petrified lizards can only be used as war creatures. As for how to breed them and how to utilize them, Sharl still needs to select some goblins from among the new members to conduct experiments.
"There's no rush now, we can take it slow." Charles chuckled to himself, then looked at the silent bald man. "I also wanted to ask you how many goblins were left behind in the Feathered Serpent Kingdom, but I don't think you'd tell me."
Baldy kept his head down, his eyes darting around. He didn't understand why the leader on the other side kept asking such complicated questions. Did he want to attack them?
"Don't even think about attacking the kingdom," he said, wincing in pain. "There are still plenty of goblins and Quetzalcoatl in the kingdom. If you try to attack us, you'll all die on the way."
"Halfway there?" Charles asked with interest.
"Yes, you cannot overcome the dangers on the road," the bald man said, slowly puffing out his chest. "If you release me and my men, I can try to persuade the high priest to stop attacking you."
Charles chuckled. The bald man in front of him had a pretty good plan. He only asked for the release of his own men, not for Charles to release the other cave leaders. He was also trying to persuade him, but he couldn't guarantee that he would be able to convince him.
Considering this guy's previous tactical maneuvers, one could only say he was a little clever, slightly better than other goblins.
"I'm curious, the Feathered Serpent Kingdom isn't that far from us, so why did it take you so many days to get there? Did you get lost?" Charles asked. Broken Tooth could travel alone in a few days, but this group of goblins took almost 20 days. He wondered how they got there. "Logically speaking, you should know the way by now."
Baldy fell silent again. He suddenly realized that this guy wasn't the leader of the tribe. How could he ask such a stupid question? With such a large group of goblins, they had to find food and fight for places to eat and sleep. He had already racked his brains to successfully bring this bunch of idiots here.
Thinking of this, he rolled his eyes at Charles, feeling dissatisfied that he had lost to such a guy.
After observing the other person's actions, Charles thought for a moment, then lightly patted his forehead. "Oh, I know."
For a moment, he forgot about the other side's equipment. His own clan always prepared supplies before each expedition, which were carried by ants in cargo boxes, allowing them to move quickly. These guys, on the other hand, were already considered efficient if they could travel for a whole morning.
"Since you don't want to talk about it, then I'll just have to take my men to the Feathered Serpent Kingdom myself," Charles said, spreading his hands.
However, this sentence caught Baldy's attention. He pursed his lips, which aggravated the swelling and pain on his face, but still could not hide his smugness. "With your strength, you will not be able to cross this forest. There is hardly any food along the way, and there are not many caves where you can rest. If you want to attack the Feathered Serpent Kingdom, your team will run away halfway through."
Seeing the smug bald man, Charles didn't say anything. He simply turned around and walked into the white stone ring behind him. Then, a goblin next to him operated the controller, and with a "whoosh," Charles disappeared in front of the bald man.
Immediately afterwards, Baldy stared in shock as he watched Charles appear in the stone circle beside him.
"How about this? Wouldn't that allow us to reach the Feathered Serpent Kingdom quickly?" Charles shrugged and smiled. "I don't need to bring many people. I can just take a small team, set this up outside the kingdom beforehand, and then just 'whoosh' it will be."
"Magic, magic." Baldy stammered, his lips trembling. He had only seen the humans who came to buy the bubbling leaves use magic a few times before, and he had seen the freezing magic circle used by the Shar tribe last time, but he hadn't seen it again this time. He originally thought that these goblins had just dug up some useful things in the forest, but now that "magic" had appeared in front of him again, Baldy was somewhat incoherent. "The high priest said that goblins can't learn magic at all."
"Of course goblins can learn magic." Sharl smiled and shook his head, but immediately he frowned. He thought that if he only sent a small team with the stone ring parts along the way, there would probably be problems. Winter is the peak season for magical beasts, and he didn't know how many magical beasts they would encounter along the way. The small team's ability might not be enough to defeat so many magical beasts.
"That is a problem. If the fighting strength is insufficient, this tactic cannot be used." He stroked his chin, thinking about a solution. He would not do what Baldy did, leading a large group of goblins through the Nightmare Forest to attack the Feathered Serpent Kingdom. Such a march would be a fatal blow to the tribe's logistics.
"Brother, brother, look what I found!" A voice from afar caught Charles's attention. Pazzani, holding a strange beast bone, "swam" over, his fish tail wagging. "A monster's bone, look."
A whole piece of monster bone, it looked like it had just been peeled off not long ago, with black chunks of meat still remaining on it. The entire bone had an unusual sky-blue color, which was different from the other grayish-white beast bones.
"There are many more in the forest, piled up like small mountains. I even saw a huge snail shell in there," Prince Naga said excitedly.
"A lot of animal bones, all from magical beasts?" Charles raised an eyebrow, staring at the bones before asking, "Did you see any magical beast hides?"
"Uh," Pazzani thought for a moment, then shook his head, "I didn't see any, not a single one."
"How many magical beasts have you encountered along the way?" Sharl asked the silent bald man hesitantly.
"Many, but we killed them all," Baldy said proudly.
"You didn't use the petrifying gaze of petrifying lizards to deal with these magical beasts, and then all the skins turned to stone, leaving only the bones that haven't petrified yet as usable, did you?" Xia Er said irritably. "Such good magical beast skins could have been used in so many ways, and you just wasted them like that."
"However," he changed the subject, "I still want to thank you for bringing me these magical beast materials and cores, and for clearing out the magical beasts along the way, so I can directly send a small team to set up the magic circle."
"You, I..." Baldy stammered, unable to speak. He had only sent out giant lizards whenever he encountered magical beasts in order to show off his strength to the other cavemen. Moreover, he had sent 2000 goblins to search for food, which required searching a large area each time. He encountered magical beasts every day. But after hearing what Shar said, he realized that he had actually helped the other party.
"Thank you so much," Charles smiled and shook his head. "Not only did you bring so much labor to my people, but you also cleared the obstacles on my way and brought me all the spoils of war. What can I say?"
He walked over and personally pulled up the bald man who was squatting on the ground, completely disregarding the swelling and pain on the bald man's face caused by the sudden movement. "I will release you and let you go back. Don't worry, I won't hurt you."
"You're letting me go back again?" Baldy was stunned. "You're not going to kill me?"
"Yes, how could I kill someone as outstanding as you?" Charles waved his hand. His tribe's rapid growth over the past month was all thanks to Baldy, the "transportation captain." Who would be willing to kill such an excellent person?
"Of course, to prevent you from encountering danger on the way, I won't just let you go back alone." Charles smiled and waved to the red-eyed figure in the distance.
"Let me and my men go back together?" Baldy's eyes immediately sparkled with a star called "hope".
"No, I'll have the other cavemen go back with you," Charles said with a smile. Unfortunately, the smile on his face looked like a devil's smile to Baldy's eyes, and the "stars" in Baldy's eyes deflated with a "poof".
"Red Eyes, find all the other cave dwellings, then have this military commander take them back with you," Charles ordered his men, then continued, "You watch this place; I'm going to check out the forest."
He planned to go with Pazzani to check out the magical beast materials. If there were enough, Sharl would consider hiring people to set up a magical item manufacturing workshop in Goat Horn Town.
As for the goblins, Sharl was certain they would accept staying with their own kind.
Goblins are creatures with some intelligence, but not particularly clever. They judge things more from their own self-interest, simply put, "how much can I eat?" In other places, these goblins are completely starving, but only in the Shire can they get enough to eat.
The only pleasures of a wild goblin's life are probably eating and mating, but both must be done in accordance with the rules of the two major races: the leader eats first and the female belongs to the leader.
But now, Sharl only lines up at the front of the queue whenever the tribe gets food. He eats the same things as the other goblins in the tribe and doesn't eat meat, leaving the weakest goblin in the tribe without even soup. As for the female goblins, although many of them stare at Sharl with wide eyes, especially the white-haired one, he really doesn't like it.
So the tribe is developing in a healthy way now. Every time a new goblin joins, he hesitates for several days. Some even have the idea of challenging Sharl. But as soon as they see the red-eyed, chest-out, and belly-stuffed man standing next to Sharl, they obediently give up their thoughts, gradually become obedient, and finally become like other goblins, indulging in the daily fried dried fish and tree fruit pancakes.
As for those goblins, Sharl would never leave them behind. These guys had already experienced the taste of enslaving other goblins, and they would crave power even more. Even if they had no talent other than being physically stronger than other goblins, it wouldn't stop them from having thoughts of fighting for power and profit.
Keeping these guys around is like having a ticking time bomb. You never know when a goblin might rush up and hit Sharl. Although it won't hurt Sharl, it will reduce Sharl's influence in the tribe to some extent.
"Transportation Captain, don't let me down," Charles said with a smile, following behind Pazzani with his hands behind his back.
"Brother, let me tell you, there are so many animal bones, and that snail shell is this big!" Pazzani excitedly stretched out his hands to show them.
"Don't call me brother."
"Okay, bro."
