Forests Don't Support Idle Goblins
Chapter 332 Curiosity Killed the Goblin?
After five days of collaborative efforts by more than 2000 goblins, elephants, and a large number of worker ants, they finally cleared the collapsed stone tower, revealing a dark passage leading deep underground to the goblins.
During these five days, Charles was not idle at all. He traveled all over the Feathered Serpent Kingdom and gained a clearer understanding of these ruins.
There were hardly any intact buildings in the entire area. Of the few two-story stone buildings that still stood strong, only the broken stone structures remained, and some walls were missing. Xia Er did not try to climb to the second floor of the building, if it could still be called a building.
Most of the area consists of piles of stones, showing signs of weathering and water erosion. The entire kingdom is mostly covered with trees and caves, with cave entrances visible every so often.
These burrows were originally inhabited by goblins, and the conditions inside were indescribable. The unpleasant smell deterred Sharl from going in to take a look.
As for the trees in the Feathered Serpent Kingdom, Sharl was quite pleased. He discovered a large number of Dragon Claw Trees there. After asking the goblin natives, he learned why there were so many Dragon Claw Trees. It was because the fruits of the Dragon Claw Tree tasted alright, but the seeds were rather small. After the goblins ate the fruits, the seeds naturally dispersed with their excrement. Over a long period of time, this place became a forest of Dragon Claw Trees.
The leaves of the dragon claw tree are turning yellow now. The high priest said that the merchants would send people here before winter to exchange some food with the goblins for the leaves.
Charles examined the food; it was very coarse wheat, never husked, and mixed with a lot of sand.
The Shire tribes had long since refused to eat such food, but the high priest said it was their winter food, which was only distributed to goblins in the latter part of winter when hunting was difficult.
Recalling the look in Baldy's eyes, Sharl gradually understood the goblins' thoughts. Compared to those goblins who were driven out of the kingdom, at least they had something to eat in the winter and could survive, unlike what White Hair had said before, that they could only start eating little goblins in the winter.
As for Baldy, he and the other cavemen were expelled from their territory by the Charles and driven directly east.
These guys are different from the high priests. They should be considered beneficiaries. They don't participate in the lottery and can stay in the Feathered Serpent Kingdom. When it comes to eating, they are the first to eat in the cave. Sharl thinks that the two ironclad rules of the goblin tribe in the forest came from the cave of the Feathered Serpent Kingdom.
At first, the high priest offered his own ideas on the decision-making of the Shire. He suggested that the goblins should be organized into different burrows as before, which would make them easier to manage.
But Sharl refused, "This is just a village management model learned from humans. All goblins live the same way. As long as you find them a fierce leader, you can control them well."
"But at the same time, this model is also very rudimentary, and the value that each goblin can create is very limited."
"More importantly, these goblins still haven't escaped the category of 'despicable forest monsters'."
Charles offered this explanation to the High Priest, but the High Priest's understanding was limited, and he could not fully comprehend Charles's intentions.
"What I want is for goblins to no longer live underground and to be able to bask in the sunlight, and for them to no longer have to spend their days catching mice and stealing bird eggs. They can do more things, more valuable things."
The high priest frowned at the word "value." In his opinion, the value of a goblin was how much food it could find in the forest, and the value of a goblin was directly proportional to its hunting ability.
But Charles smiled and said, "I think goblins can demonstrate greater value."
After successfully taking over the city, he has planned many industries for his tribe, from gathering herbs, wild vegetables and fruits to maintaining the tree people and collecting fruits, from raising "big fat pig" mimics to raising petrified lizards and giant ants, from planting red bull mushrooms to collecting dragon claw tree leaves, from hunting animals in the forest to besieging monsters that appear. These industries all require a lot of manpower.
Moreover, once these industries start operating, they will exchange a large amount of resources and money from human society.
"When we have enough power and competitive products, those humans will rediscover the goblin." These were the words Sharl said to the high priest. His confident smile at the time left the elderly goblin stunned for a long time.
"I'm getting old," the high priest said, bowing his head for the first time. His back was no longer as straight, and he seemed to have aged considerably. "I hope I can still see that day."
"I think if you're happy every day and have good food and drink, you should be able to see it," Charles comforted her.
After this incident, Shire became even more excited to tour the entire "city." He also visited Mr. Elton several times and obtained the city plan of the "City of All Races" from three skeleton warriors.
Combining the appearance of ancient cities with the beautiful cities that Xia Er had seen in his previous life, he made plans for this city, which had not yet begun construction, in these 5 days.
The southern area is planned to serve as a military camp and training ground for goblins to conduct military training. The reason for building it in the south is mainly to guard against potential human threats. A large "stadium" will also be built here for goblins to play their favorite game of "flying sticks". The northern area will be developed into a trading area. The northern part of the city is adjacent to Lake Dallen, where a port will be built in the future. A frogman living area and a future commercial district will also be built around Lake Dallen. If humans want to visit this city, the northern area will be their place of residence.
As for the western area of the city, it will be an animal breeding area. This area is very close to the Daren River, which makes it convenient to obtain water and also facilitates breeding. The eastern area of the city and the city center are planned by Shire as the main living areas for the goblin tribe.
Currently, all of these only exist on the Shard's plans; in the future, all goblins will need to be mobilized to gradually complete them.
But at least for now, Shire has sent centaurs to meet the frogmen. Once the cold winter is over, the frogmen can move to the "City of All Races" and live in the area that Shire has planned for them by Lake Dallen.
"We can only build one area at a time now." After walking around the entire city, Xia Er had a general idea of what to do. "We can put the port commercial district and the military camp in the south aside for now. We must start building houses in the east of the city first. But before that, we must level the land, remove the weeds and shrubs, and cut down some trees. We need to build roads first."
These guys are having some trouble, mainly filling in the burrows and logging, but luckily the elephant herd is helping, which will make things much easier.
He plans to start organizing manpower for urban construction after the collapsed stone tower is excavated.
…………
"It's so dark here." Ciel looked up into the depths of the passage from behind Red Eyes.
The goblins around him held torches, illuminating the surroundings completely, but the passage remained pitch black.
"We're almost there." The high priest leaned on his bone staff and descended two stone steps. "Every time I go down to see Quetzalcoatl, I take this path. I'm only halfway there now."
"What could be in the nest of the feathered serpent?" Charles looked around at the stone walls. There were obvious signs of human excavation, but it was also clear that the area had been abandoned over time.
"I don't know," the high priest shook his head. "Every time I need to see Quetzalcoatl, I have to extinguish my torch, and the last part of the journey often requires me to enter in the dark."
"Is it that mysterious?" Charles stroked his chin and frowned. "I have a feeling that Quetzalcoatl is guarding some kind of treasure."
"I don't know about that. We never dared to enter this place without permission before." The high priest reached out and touched a protruding rock beside him. In the torchlight, you could see that its edges had been worn smooth. "The feathered serpent god would occasionally come out of the cave, but he would go to the central altar more often."
"The altar?" Charles frowned. Needless to say, he knew what that place was. Strictly speaking, it was the feathered serpent's "dining table".
"Let's go in and take a look," Charles ordered his men, and the goblins continued their exploration.
After walking a short distance, Xia Er saw a stone platform about five meters wide. The platform was pitted and covered with many dark marks, which were dried bloodstains, the bloodstains that flowed when the feathered serpent god ate the "offering".
It was all goblin blood.
"This must be the sacrificial altar," Charles asked calmly, surveying the stone platform without turning his head.
"Yes." The high priest sighed deeply. Since he became the high priest, countless goblins had lost their lives here.
"There won't be any more sacrifices in the future," Charles said softly. Although he considered himself human, he felt disgusted by this "living goblin sacrifice" ritual.
"Let's go, let's see what that old serpent, Quetzalcoatl, has been hiding." He waved his hand, urging everyone to continue forward.
Inside the cave, the feeling that was calling him grew stronger and stronger, and Charles knew that there must be a metal hemisphere waiting for him inside.
But besides that, I don't know what else might be included.
Could there be the molted snake skin of Quetzalcoatl, or some other "specialty" of the forest, or the remains of a monster hunted by Quetzalcoatl?
All of this remains unknown. Xiaer only hopes that he won't find some tattered equipment and feathered serpent excrement again, like when he searched the goblin's lair.
All of this remains unknown. Xiaer only hopes that he won't find some tattered equipment and feathered serpent excrement again, like when he searched the goblin's lair.
After walking for some time, they finally arrived at a huge underground space.
It appears to have been transformed from a natural cave, with a ceiling over ten meters high and a very spacious interior. Charles even felt that if the elephant came here, it could easily turn around.
Scattered on the ground were large amounts of grayish-white bone fragments, clearly the remains of goblins eaten by feathered serpents. In the corner of the cave, there were also piles of gray "leather," broken into pieces and scattered haphazardly on the stones.
"The molted skin of Quetzalcoatl?" Ciel stepped over the broken bones and came to a piece of molted skin. He bent down and picked it up. These things were a bit thicker than leather, but they were brittle, either because of their age or because of their material. As soon as he picked up the molted skin, it broke in one place.
"This is a bit of a problem." He looked at the snake molts in front of him, which had been there for a long time and had not been properly preserved. He knew that they would be difficult to make into leather armor, as their brittle quality would not be able to withstand the attack of weapons. "I can only take them to old man Martial and see if he has any ideas."
Charles could only give it a try; perhaps the magic artisans would have a better idea.
He put down the snake slough and began to instruct everyone to spread out and search the surroundings to see if anything was buried under the snake slough and broken bones.
He closed his eyes and quietly listened to the faint call.
"It's definitely much stronger now, and it seems to be coming from the left." Charles slowly opened his eyes, holding a torch as he walked to the left.
"Clatter, clatter," he stepped on the broken bones, making a gritty sound. As he got closer to the wall, the call became clearer.
Charles bent down, drew the short blade from his waist, and began searching through the pile of bones. In the process, he also lifted up several pieces of snake skin, some of which broke off directly after being lifted.
"It seems to be here." Finally, a dull metallic clang came from Ciel's short blade.
He shoved aside the surrounding bone fragments, then used his short blade to dig through the soil beneath, and soon a gray hemisphere was revealed.
The sphere had irregular geometric patterns on it, and it was almost identical to the hemisphere he had placed at the bottom of the fortress box.
Charles carefully dug out the metal hemisphere, then slowly wiped away the loose dirt, and then brought up the sphere's panel:
[Item: Tower of Babel Key (Fragment)]
[Quality: God-tier]
[Purpose: To unlock the underground vault of the Tower of Babel]
[Note: You've found it, and you're one step closer to the final answer. Beware of those who try to stop you; they're tough to deal with.]
"The second fragment of the [Tower of Babel Key]." Charles pursed his lips, somewhat puzzled that the two fragments had different descriptions.
Moreover, it says on this section that "they" will prevent themselves from reaching the end and exploring the secrets of the Tower of Babel.
"That means there must be something the Four Gods don't want the world to know inside the Tower of Babel." Charles examined the key fragment in his hand. "If one day I were to assemble the fragments, would I immediately incur the wrath of the gods?"
Thinking of this, he couldn't help but feel a little guilty, but these fragments were right in front of him, so mysterious, and Charles couldn't help but feel a strong sense of curiosity.
"I have to go and see it. Even if curiosity killed the cat, I'm a goblin now."
