Forests Don't Support Idle Goblins
Chapter 333 Quetzalcoatl's "Treasures"
Charles didn't know exactly where the Tower of Babel was, but judging from the name, it must be a very tall building, otherwise it wouldn't be called the Tower of Babel.
But no one had ever seen such a magnificent building before, and even Shire himself only learned its name for the first time in the goblin's cave.
This thing exists only in legends known to very few people; it is too far removed from ordinary people or even some nobles.
Now that they had obtained the second fragment, Charles had some new ideas.
Having obtained key fragments twice in a row, both times buried in the ground, it's likely that no one else would have noticed them if they hadn't been subtly calling out to him. Ciel felt as if he had been preordained. He had a bit of a "Truman Show" feeling, like Truman in the movie, who had to say certain things and do certain things at every turn in order to "trigger" his day.
At first, he wondered if it was related to his being a follower of the God of Night and Fate. After learning the secrets of "God's War" and "God's Chosen," he even naively thought he was the chosen one. However, he quickly dismissed the idea with a wry smile. "Who has ever seen a god choose a goblin instead of a human? Besides, even if I were chosen, where would my church base be? Where would my trusted confidants be?"
The Church of Night and Fate will never give up on their "chosen ones" unless they abandoned the war of gods in the first place.
Therefore, Charles felt that he had nothing to do with the God of Fate. He had only gone to church with his father to fool Bishop Conrad. Although the bishop often invited them to eat some so-called "holy communion" in the church, the taste was honestly very ordinary, not even as good as the spicy grilled fish made by the old shops in Torch City.
"I suspect it's still that 'Whispers of the Forest' problem," Charles thought, believing the root cause was still related to the ancient voice in the darkness. "I wonder what that is—a hidden demon lord, or a slumbering creator god?"
He felt the chances were higher for a demon lord, after all, his status was too low; he couldn't even speak to the creator god, and besides, there were six demon lords, of whom he had already come into contact with. Jealousy and anger might just be one of the other three.
"Greed? Pride, or sloth?" Charles smiled, unsure which one it was, but he thought it might be sloth. This demon lord was very mysterious; the major churches only knew of its existence, but almost no one knew its specifics. "Based on our previous contact, the owner of this mysterious voice has never appeared, not even a hint. Too lazy."
He believed that another reason for the other party's laziness was that since he learned of the other party's existence, the lazy one had never given him a contract or mentioned any future benefits. He was truly lazy to the extreme.
However, there was one thing that Charles couldn't understand: why he had unexpectedly ordered the battle against the Feathered Serpent God. They didn't resist at all. Logically speaking, these demon lords wouldn't care about the lives of humans, let alone a group of goblins.
But he went up there obediently and followed orders. Even after being broken in two, he did not show the power that a demon lord should have.
"Is the rank of Sloth really that high, even higher than...? Are there barons, viscounts, and earls among the demon lords?" Charles was still unsure of the situation. "Never mind, I'll just keep this key fragment safe. I'll find out the truth someday."
After finding the fragment of the Tower of Babel Key, Shire waited with his hands behind his back for the others to search the cave. It was full of broken bones and dry, brittle snake molts. He wondered if there would be any other "treasures".
But after waiting for almost half an hour, the goblins kept rummaging through the broken bones, finding nothing, which made Sharl frown.
"You flying serpent, you really are one of those goblin brethren. Goblin burrows are full of junk equipment, but you're nothing but trash." Charles shook his head in annoyance, his opinion of the feathered serpent even lower. "What evil god? You're just a glutton who hides in your cave, eating and waiting to die. If it weren't for the goblins 'raising' you, you'd be dead by now."
Charles was a little downcast that his men hadn't found anything. He had originally thought he could find something good here, or at least some "parts" of magical beasts, which he could then give to magic craftsmen to make various simple magical items.
Now, all that's left are broken bone fragments and dried-up rotten skin. Oh, and there's a divine item, but that's something Char dug up himself, not something Quetzalcoatl collected.
Just as he was about to order another search and leave, the high priest's voice came from afar, "Chief, there is a cave entrance here."
The sound immediately caught Charles's attention. He stepped on the broken bones, crunching as he quickly ran over. "A cave entrance? What's inside?"
"I don't know, it's very dark inside." The high priest stood at the entrance of a cave about half a person's height, waiting for Charles's arrival.
"Is the cave entrance really that high?" Xia Er measured the height and found that it was only 1.5 meters high at most. If you didn't get close to it, it would be completely obscured by the piled-up bones on the ground and the dark rock walls.
"When I saw Quetzalcoatl before, it would always lean its body against this side," the high priest said, rummaging through the broken bones on the ground with his bone staff while peering into the cave. "Although it never allowed me to use a torch, the green light emanating from its snake eyes was enough to indicate its location."
"You always rely on this place?" Charles turned his head and glanced around the cave. The space here was very large. He had seen the body of Quetzalcoatl before, and it was indeed very spacious to live in this cave.
"Yes, I hadn't paid attention to it before, but after lighting the torches today and brightening the surroundings, I suddenly noticed this." The high priest traced a circle around the area with his bone staff, gesturing for Charles to look at the ground.
Charles scanned the area and indeed found very few broken bones and snake molts in this area, which was a level lower than other parts of the cave. "If what you said is true, it seems that Quetzalcoatl likes to lie here all the time."
"So I came here to take a look, until I discovered this cave."
"But why would Quetzalcoatl block this cave entrance?" Charles took a torch from one of his men and peered into the cave. "Its body can't fit in at all."
A colossal evil god couldn't possibly squeeze into a hole only a meter high. Charles frowned. "Or perhaps there's something else inside, guarded by Quetzalcoatl, that he doesn't want you to discover."
"Guard?" The high priest paused, taken aback. "What can it guard? Snake eggs?"
"A snake probably can't lay eggs," Charles chuckled. "Unless there's another snake living in here, one that's not that big."
"This is troublesome. Could it be dangerous?" The high priest immediately extended his bone staff, blocking Charles's path. "Chief, you must leave first."
"Of course, that's just my deduction," Charles pressed down on the high priest's bone staff, "but you're right, we do need to be careful."
Now that we've finally conquered the entire Feathered Serpent Kingdom, if things go wrong now, the losses will be enormous.
Then, Charles ordered Bucktooth to immediately take his men back to the fortress and find a few Furu to see if they could sense the evil aura.
"Hopefully it's not another giant serpent," Sharl waved his hand, signaling the other goblins to quiet down their search. "If it is a giant serpent, that's alright; it's winter now, they're probably hibernating."
After a while, a Furu was finally brought in, along with the little fairy Shanxiao.
"Brother, you really conquered this kingdom!" Shanxiao excitedly landed on Xia'er's shoulder, his eyes sparkling as he looked around. "Where is this place? Is it the cafeteria?"
"Hmm," Charles tilted the "curious baby" on his shoulder, "If it can talk, then talk more."
Shanxi Ao was taken aback, then immediately realized something. His gaze swept over the goblin in front of him, and his lips twitched a few times. "Sorry, I didn't mean to."
"This is the dwelling place of Quetzalcoatl, and you should already know what these broken bones are," Charles sighed and said.
"So many! How much did they eat?" Shanxi Ao exclaimed, his wings drooping down, and his whole demeanor becoming somewhat dim.
He had lived with the Shire's tribe for two months and had gradually become familiar with these goblins. Now, the goblins and centaurs had accepted the concept that goblins were not an evil race in the forest, but seeing so many skeletons now, Shanxi Ao found it hard to accept for a moment.
"Fortunately, Quetzalcoatl has been driven away." Charles comforted the little goblin on his shoulder. "Now this is a goblin village, and in the future it will be a city for all the forest tribes."
"A city? I've heard my sister talk about it. When I went to Black Lion City before, I could only peek through the gap in my hat. I didn't really get to explore it much. If you want to build a city here, you must leave me a house." Shanxi Ao's mood immediately turned to excitement. He was still young and easily influenced by others.
"Your parents and sister need to agree," Charles said with a smile, then glanced at the high priest beside him, who looked shocked. "Oh, I forgot to introduce you, this is the little fairy Shanxiao."
"Forest fairy, free forest singer, kind friend of plants, follower of justice." The high priest gripped the bone staff, his voice trembling slightly.
The high priest's words made Shanxi Ao a little embarrassed. He reached up and touched his hair, lowered his head and said, "No, not really. Of course, you are indeed talking about us little fairies. I am the most powerful among them."
"This is the high priest of the Goblin Kingdom," Sharl said, gently tapping Shanxiao's head with his finger. "Don't believe him. That's just his personality; he's always making a fuss."
"How could that be? I personally killed a corrupted druid before," Shanxi Ao said loudly while fixing his hair.
"A fallen druid?" The high priest was shocked again. "A druid who betrayed the church?"
"Yes, this was told to me personally by the Druids of the Church of Earth and Life, and my brother can testify to it."
"Alright, it really was thanks to your 'earth-shattering sword strike' back then," Charles interrupted the two of them impatiently, then beckoned to Furu, who was cowering to the side, "Come and take a look."
Seeing that Charles had something important to say, Shanxiao wisely kept quiet. However, he noticed the high priest's eager gaze beside him and whispered, "I'll tell you later how brave my brother and I were back then."
"Earth, hero." Furu floated over tremblingly, his two eyelids drooping weakly. From the moment he entered the cave, he had been looking at this large pile of broken bones and recognized that they were not the bones of forest animals. Now, after only a short while, he was so scared that he wanted to exhale and fly out of the cave immediately.
"Take a look at what's going on in here," Charles said, pointing to the hole in the ground beside him.
Furu obediently approached the entrance to the cave, without even haggling, and trembled as it floated two meters into the cave.
"I don't feel any evil. On the contrary," Furu quickly floated out of the burrow, one eye stalk still curiously turning towards the burrow, "I feel a strong aura, very hot, and it's benevolent."
"So, there aren't any giant snakes inside?" Charles stroked his chin, gazing into the cave.
"Brother, is this the lair of the Feathered Serpent God?" Shanxi Ao also flew off his shoulder and hovered at the cave entrance.
"I don't know, but it doesn't seem that dangerous." Charles nodded, turned around and called out the names of a few of his men, who then went into the cave with him, while the other goblins were left in the cave to continue the search.
Because the cave was very low, they only carried a few torches and walked a distance before arriving at a small cave chamber.
This is a circular cave, only about four meters high. The surrounding cave walls show little sign of human intervention, suggesting it is a natural small cave.
In the middle of the cave is a pool with a diameter of three meters, filled with a yellowish-green liquid, and in the middle of the pool stands a white egg that is one meter tall.
"The egg of Quetzalcoatl?" the high priest exclaimed immediately, surprised that there was actually an egg here.
"No, it shouldn't be." Charles frowned. He didn't examine the white egg, but instead looked down at the yellowish-green liquid in the pool.
"This thing is actually Quetzalcoatl's venom?" He learned what the yellowish-green liquid was through the panel, and waved to everyone to be careful and not to get close.
"No wonder Quetzalcoatl didn't use any venom during the battle; he used it all here." Charles looked up at the center of the pool, where the white egg was peacefully submerged in the venom.
"Interesting. Is Quetzalcoatl trying to soften the eggshell with venom, or is he planning to let the venom seep into the egg and kill the creature inside?" Charles's lips curled into a satisfied smile.
In his eyes, the one-meter-tall egg also revealed its name.
