Forests Don't Support Idle Goblins

Chapter 403 We are all his guests
This greeting relieved Xia Er. Now that the strongest fighter of the tribe had arrived, there was nothing to worry about.
However, he still gripped the scroll of the [Acceleration] spell tightly. If this high-ranking mage named Cunningham charged at him recklessly, he would have no choice but to immediately cast [Dimensional Gate] to save his life first.
Agatha Christie once said that these cursed sorcerers are very difficult to deal with, and they can even extract their own souls. Simply destroying their bodies is not enough to kill them.
"As expected of the dark magic faction." Charles stared intently at Cunningham, but the other man didn't look at him at all. Instead, he looked in the direction of the previous greeting and stood there stunned.
"You, you're a lizardman?" Cunningham found everything he saw utterly absurd: a gaunt man nearly two meters tall, wearing black straight-leg trousers and a pure white linen shirt, with a leather overcoat over a black tight-fitting vest.
That coat was clearly a long magic robe, but the person hadn't buttoned it up and was wearing it like a trench coat, which, it must be said, added a touch of elegance.
However, this charming fellow had a grayish-white bald head, huge green vertical pupils on either side of his protruding nose, and a tail with distinct joints that swayed slowly behind him.
"Yes, I am indeed a lizardman." Spencer stood at a distance, his hands behind his back, surveying the chaotic "battlefield."
At this moment, Diana was looking at him warily, while Sophia behind her was also taking the time to heal herself. Beside them, Charles was tense all over, his legs bent and his back bent, looking ready to pounce. In the distance, the goblins were rolling on the ground, scratching and biting each other's faces, fighting fiercely.
"It seems I've arrived at the wrong time." Spencer smiled, his gaze falling on Cunningham, this high-ranking mage who had piqued his interest.
"No, quite the opposite, you've come at the perfect time," Charles quickly said. "By the way, you've come—"
"It's nothing. Sancho told me earlier that there's a new dish today." Spencer opened his mouth slightly, sticking out his white tongue to lick his lips.
"Are you the master of these goblins?" Cunningham gripped his staff tightly. He instinctively felt that this lizardman mage would be difficult to deal with. Judging from his thin appearance, could he be a lich?
The idea that a lizardman lich was hiding in the Nightmare Forest is absurd. Even those idiots in the Sorcerer's Guild probably wouldn't believe it if word got out.
"Master?" Spencer blinked in surprise, glancing at Charles with a puzzled look in his eyes. "No, I can't say he's his master."
His words made Cunningham frown, but then the lizardman lich added, "In fact, I, and these two beautiful ladies, are his guests."
"A guest?" Cunningham chuckled twice. "I'm not a three-year-old. There's no need to try to fool me with words like that."
After saying that, he stared at the lizardman who stood ramrod straight, with an expression that said, "I've seen through everything."
But Spencer just smiled and watched him silently. Even Diana and Sophia remained silent. The only sounds around them were the garbled curses of the goblins tearing at each other.
"You, are you serious?" Cunningham felt a little uneasy under the gazes of the three men. He slightly raised his staff, aimed it at Spencer, and asked tentatively.
He only received two nods in response, but this silent answer shocked Cunningham even more. He frowned, gritted his teeth, and questioned, "Why? He's just a goblin."
"Oh, nothing," Spencer grinned, "he's just my type."
"Does it suit your taste?"
"Yes, I get along with him, and this place is quite interesting," Spencer said, ignoring the growing annoyance of the high-ranking mage before him, and turned to Charles, "Are we going to eat Miss White's new dishes later?"
"Uh, I don't know," Charles muttered. He actually wanted to say, "Archmage, Great Lich, this is a life-or-death battle. Didn't you see that Sophia is already injured? Why are you still thinking about what White Hair is cooking?"
"Yes, it's stewed venison." Diana explained for Charles, holding her twin swords horizontally in front of Sophia. "I tried it before, and it tasted good. It also has radish in it. The venison is tender and not dry, and the radish absorbs the meat's aroma. You can eat two more bowls of rice with the broth. The freshness of the venison and the sweetness of the radish go perfectly together—"
"Shut up!" Cunningham shouted, interrupting Diana. He looked furious, partly because the battle had exceeded his expectations, and partly because he was now certain that the lizardman lich was right: he and the suspected high-ranking Crusaders and the druids of the Church of Life were all "guests" of this goblin.
Why would a high-ranking mage and two church officials be guests of the goblins?
Shouldn't you guys just chop down goblins as soon as you see them? Why do you seem to be obeying him?
What's going on with this goblin? Isn't it that they're keeping goblins as pets, but rather—
Cunningham's eyes widened, his pupils shrinking instantly. "So this goblin is keeping them?"
"Well, my friend, what brings you here? You don't seem to be here as a guest." Spencer smiled. Diana's explanation had made him quite happy. He hadn't eaten for hundreds of years, and experiencing eating again made him feel very blissful.
"He's here to kill me," Charles narrowed his eyes, "or rather, he's here to take my soul."
Spencer nodded slightly. "I understand. It seems to be another magician obsessed with life experiments."
"You figured it out?" Diana was somewhat surprised. Although this lizardman lich was very powerful, it had managed to see through Cunningham's purpose in an instant. Keep in mind that the lizardman lich wasn't even there when they were fighting earlier.
"It's simple, I've seen this kind of thing many times." Spencer shrugged. "And what I just heard... you must have done human experimentation and are wanted by the Sorcerer's Guild?"
"You know about the Sorcerer's Guild?" Cunningham slowly lowered his staff. "Yes, I am wanted, but it was all worth it."
"Worth it? Those goblins and humans you killed wouldn't think that way." Charles retorted through gritted teeth. He had previously received information from Mary that a secret underground laboratory using goblins as experimental subjects had been discovered in Goat Horn Town. At the time, he thought it was a half-baked magician, but he never expected it to be this high-ranking archmage in front of him.
"Hmph." Cunningham ignored Sharl and simply snorted coldly. In his eyes, goblins were just consumables. Even if they could speak Common and use some magic, they were just materials with great research value.
"Of course I know about the Spellcasting Association. I was wanted before, and," Spencer raised his head slightly, as if counting something, then shook his head a few times after a few seconds, seemingly unable to come up with an answer, "and I was wanted for over a hundred years, or even over two hundred years."
"More than two hundred years?" Cunningham took a step back. He was shocked by what the lizardman lich said. He had never been a member of the Federation for more than a hundred years. How could this lizardman have the audacity to say that he had been wanted for so long?
He was about to mock the other man, but then Cunningham frowned. He seemed to remember something, and exclaimed, "You, you're the lizardman mage who tried to steal the key fragments to the Tower of Babel?"
"Ah, yes, but it's not stealing." Spencer quickly waved his hand. "It's returning it to its rightful owner. You guys keep the key as a treasure and tell those low-level mages that my travelogue is a ridiculous fairy tale, so of course I have to take it back."
"What key fragment?" Charles looked at the two high-ranking archmages. He was absolutely certain that he hadn't misheard. The curse mage named Cunningham had indeed mentioned the key fragment of the Tower of Babel, but what did this have to do with the Spell Union?
"A fragment of the Tower of Babel." Spencer shook his head. "Remember what I told you? Those old guys in the Sorcerer's Guild worshipped that thing. They treated it like a totem, and everyone longed to one day enter the Tower of Babel, which supposedly possessed all the magical books."
"And I failed because they stopped me, and ended up being wanted by the whole world." He pointed to himself and laughed, a laugh that didn't seem helpless at all, as if being wanted was no big deal to Spencer.
"You didn't die, and you even switched to necromancy?" Cunningham looked at the gaunt lizardman with some surprise.
"Yes, how could I die? I haven't even returned to the Tower of Babel yet, how could I die so easily?" Spencer shrugged, glancing at Charles.
Charles understood what he meant. The two had talked several times before about the Holy Kingdom's floating city of Avalon and the Tower of Babel. Spencer had previously said that if the entrance to the Tower of Babel could be rediscovered one day, this magic tower with the most complete collection of books in the world could be used as a library for the magic academy.
"Are you still searching for it?" Cunningham asked.
“Yes,” Spencer nodded, then looked at Cunningham, “it seems you’re also looking for something?”
"Plague." Cunningham uttered only one word, but it was a word that would give any magic student a headache.
"Do we need to use goblins for experiments to study the plague?" Charles said coldly.
Cunningham merely glanced at the goblin opposite him, his voice filled with disdain. "Goblins don't know magic. We can easily observe the effects of the plague and the progress of the experiment by using them. Why not?"
"They are not rats, they are not monkeys."
Cunningham chuckled twice, looking down at Charles. "What's the difference between a race that can't use magic and monkeys? You goblins should be grateful that you can contribute everything you have to the great research of magic. That's your only purpose in living in this world."
With a "boom," a cloud of dust rose up, and Cunningham's answer was Shire's magic—True Magic Explosion.
With a few cracking sounds, the cracks in the aura shield around Cunningham widened again. This time, the magic shield was covered with cracks, and it seemed that one more attack would shatter it completely.
"Is this your rebuttal?" Cunningham's voice rang out again from the smoke and dust, followed by a magical fluctuation.
Charles quickly took two steps back, only to hear a "whoosh" sound coming from afar.
He looked closely and discovered that a dense layer of bone spurs had somehow risen up around Spencer's body, many of which had broken off and the fragments had disappeared into the air.
"Advanced Annihilation Curse?" Spencer was somewhat surprised. "To use such a powerful spell directly on me, it seems you intended to kill me from the very beginning."
"As a guest of the goblins, you shouldn't stand idly by." As the smoke and dust gradually dissipated, Cunningham raised his staff, facing the lizardman lich.
The smoke and shockwave from Charles's magical energy explosion provided cover for Cunningham. Taking advantage of the obstructed view, he launched a surprise attack on Spencer. However, he did not expect that the lizardman lich was also a seasoned veteran who had set up necromancy spells around him beforehand.
"Bone Forest Technique?" Cunningham frowned. "You cast a defensive spell on yourself so quickly."
"Yes, you're no ordinary person either," Spencer chuckled. "Advanced Annihilation Curse, a silent curse spell, is arguably the most powerful magic in the curse school. Anyone hit by it will have a part of their body disappear instantly, and if they're unlucky, their head will vanish in an instant."
"Annihilation Technique," he shook his head, "similar to the annihilation breath of an adult black dragon."
"However, I think you still can't do much about me," Spencer said, waving his hand again. Outside the dense circle of bone spikes standing upright, another circle of bone spikes shot out from the ground and stood around him. "My Bone Forest can still cast many more. If you want to cast Annihilation on me, you'll have to have an effect as powerful as Black Dragon's Breath."
"But I think you can't do anything about it," the lizardman lich shrugged. "After all, it's the cursed faction, also known as the gutter faction."
"You!" Cunningham shouted angrily. He knew that he had no way to deal with the lizardman lich right now, and the cursed faction was indeed no match for the power-casting mages and necromancers in a head-on confrontation.
"However, I'm not without options." He chuckled coldly. "I have other ways to deal with this, which are also the results of my research."
After saying that, he raised the staff in his hand, and the magic crystal at the top of the staff emitted a bewitching purple-red light.
Immediately afterward, a rotating magic circle appeared beneath his feet, while in the air, a huge magic circle composed of purplish-red lines also emerged.
Within the magic circle, a pale, large hand reached out, followed by an arm and a shoulder.
Immediately afterwards, a huge head covered in sharp teeth and with chaotic eyes emerged from the magic circle.
"Welcome my constructs!" Cunningham roared with laughter.
