Forests Don't Support Idle Goblins
Chapter 95 We Won! [4k]
Chapter 95 We Won! [4k]
"The winds of recovery."
A group of little fairies swirled and danced around several wailing goblins, watching as the goblins' pain gradually subsided.
"Thank you." Charles looked at the little fairy in front of him.
"No, we should thank you. The little fairy will not abandon her helpers." Sansio's father hovered in front of Charles and stretched out his hands.
"I thought you wouldn't pay any attention to us. You know, we are goblins." Sharl looked at the goblin tribesmen fluttering like butterflies in the distance.
"Yes, you're right," the fairy chieftain nodded, "but we won't stubbornly define a group of creatures as good or evil based on their race, but rather on what they do."
"What you said makes a lot of sense. It's similar to a saying I once heard: 'Race does not define honor. I have seen the noblest orcs and the most despicable humans.'" Sharl nodded slightly in agreement.
"Who said that? It sounds very wise. If I have the chance, I would love to meet him." The little fairy clan leader laughed loudly.
"A man from a long time ago, but you are as wise as he was." Charles glanced at the ceiling, his thoughts seemingly drifting far away, but he quickly recovered and smiled as he extended his palm to Sancho's father.
"Speaking of wisdom, as the leader of the goblins, you are better than me." The goblin chieftain landed in Sharl's palm and folded his wings.
"No, you overestimate me." Charles chuckled a few times, then immediately changed the subject, "Did your entire tribe come? Where is Sansio?"
"Not all of them, most of them came. Sansio went back and told me. You are going through a battle." Sansio's father flapped his wings a few times, turned around and called "Sansio" a few times.
Sansio flew over from the group of healing fairies and hovered in front of Ciel.
He looked up at the surrounding stone pillars and walls and said, "No need to thank me too much, it was just a small favor."
Charles looked at Shan Xiao, who was speaking casually, and laughed. This kid had probably been watching this place while he was being treated over there. As soon as he was called, he flew over immediately, with an expression that said, "I didn't do anything, it was just something I did on the side, but please praise me, praise me a lot."
"Yes, it was a small favor, but it saved many goblin lives." Sharl smiled and nodded emphatically. "Thank you, my friend."
"Ah, it's nothing," Sansio said somewhat embarrassedly, having received the approval. He wanted to wave his hand modestly, but then felt unsure how to do it. In the end, he simply said, "I'm going to get treatment."
They simply fled in panic.
"He's a good boy," Charles said with a smile.
"Hmm, but still very inexperienced. Luckily, you've come along." Sansio's father looked at his son flying away, thinking of his missing daughter, his expression somewhat forlorn. However, he quickly composed himself and said to Sharl, "Speaking of you, leader of the goblins, there's another battle waiting for you."
Following the goblin chieftain's hand, Xia Er looked towards the blazing fire. "Don't worry, it'll be resolved soon."
He knew that the other party had retreated into the passage and was just waiting for the blazing glue to burn out, which suited his own plan perfectly.
"Bucktooth, take a few men to open that room and retrieve the Mind Eater." Charles immediately approached his subordinates and gave the order. "Then go out through the passage, circle around to the main gate of the fortress, approach them, and release the Mind Eater."
Bucktooth nodded, then led 10 goblins to rush over and open the small stone house that was sealed with the brain-eating monsters. Each of them carried two brain-eating monsters and quickly ran out of the passage.
"One-Eye, take a few men and get some Brain Eaters. Go ahead and prepare. Once you hear the enemy shouting, throw the Brain Eaters towards the door," Charles continued to instruct his men.
He planned to use the Mind Eater to launch a pincer attack from both sides in the narrow passage, trapping the Storm Brotherhood like turtles in a jar.
"Broken Tooth," Charles called to his subordinate, "You go immediately to the Brain Eater's room and keep an eye on the adventurers' movements. If anyone tries to escape, just stab them to death."
"Red Eyes, you take men and stay here to guard against them risking crossing the flames to get here."
After making some arrangements, Charles shouted, "We're about to win the final battle!"
Emlyn sat on the floor, leaning against the wall. His hands were trembling slightly, and he couldn't tell whether it was from muscle spasms caused by drawing the bow too many times or from the fear he felt from witnessing too much death.
The Storm Brotherhood, which originally numbered 40, now has only 14 members left, and many of them are injured. Although the healers are constantly casting spells, the effects of low-level healing spells are limited.
"What a troublesome bunch of goblins," he said with a self-deprecating laugh. Now he finally believed what Lila had said; there were indeed formidable goblins in the forest who could not only set traps but also fight the Brotherhood to a standstill with their defensive structures.
"Should we run away now?" Emlyn looked at the ceiling of the passage, which was only a little over 2 meters high and covered with glowing mushrooms. "I heard someone whispering about that earlier."
"These goblins are so powerful, they must have a lot of good stuff." Two veteran members of the Storm Brotherhood chatted loudly nearby.
"Yes, this site is so big, much bigger than the ones we explored before."
"Once the flames die down, they'll have no fortifications to rely on, and then the Brotherhood will just charge in," E
"These little dwarfs can be dealt with in an instant."
"Even good things require a certain life to obtain," Emlyn sighed, stealthily moving towards the passage exit.
He also overheard several trainee members saying, "After this battle, I should be able to become a full member soon," and "These goblins must have hoarded a lot of good stuff, like beast cores, gold coins, or magical equipment."
Emlyn gave a bitter smile. The battle was so fierce that he regretted his decision to join the Brotherhood. "If I lose my life, I'll never be able to return to the Great Dome."
"Shh, shh," a series of footsteps sounded. Emlyn turned his head curiously. "What's that? Other adventurers?"
The next second, his eyes widened in surprise, "Brain-eating monsters, more than twenty brain-eating monsters."
He shouted as he got up and hurriedly stepped back to prepare to draw his bow, but he stumbled after only two steps when he tripped over the monstrous corpse on the ground.
Emlyn quickly steadied himself by holding onto the wall, then drew his bow and fired an arrow, but the arrow grazed the edge of the Mind Eater and stuck to the ground.
"Damn it!" he cursed, throwing down the wooden bow and drawing the short blade from his waist.
Suddenly, Emlyn felt something jump onto his back. He turned his head and saw a brain-eating monster extending a needle-like mouthpart from under its body.
"This thing is really ugly." These were his last thoughts before he died.
One-Eyed, accompanied by several goblins and carrying more than a dozen brain-eating monsters, approached the raging flames.
Being so close to the flames, many goblins were trembling with fear, and even the mind-eating monsters in their arms were no longer behaving themselves.
"Everyone, approach slowly, don't be afraid," One-Eyed said to the goblin. "We can just throw the Brain Eater over from the side later."
"Fire will hurt you," a goblin said.
"It's alright, the chief said we won." One-Eye shouted loudly to the goblin in front of him, even though his legs were trembling slightly.
"We might get burned, we might get hurt, but someone will heal us, and the chief won't abandon us." He hugged the "little red ball" that looked like animal brain tissue tightly and continued loudly, "Do you see Nine Fingers? Even though he's missing an arm, the chief still didn't drive him out of the tribe, nor did he eat him."
"The chief said he would not abandon any of his tribe's loyal followers."
The one-eyed man finished speaking loudly, but he was conflicted inside.
He felt as if he were experiencing that feeling, the feeling the leader had described as "you'll understand when you personally defeat a powerful enemy," but his legs were still trembling. He forced a smile, "It's nothing to be afraid of, just getting close and throwing out the brain-eating monster."
"Ah!" A scream came from the other side of the flames. One-Eyed immediately shouted, "Follow me, don't be afraid."
He gritted his teeth and charged toward the flames, the scorching air scorching his entire body. Once he was close enough, he suddenly threw the brain-devouring monster out of his arms. The monster leaped over the fire through the gaps on both sides, rolled a few times after landing, and immediately rushed into the passage.
"We need to add another wooden board when we get back, and carve the number of victories for each battle on it." He said, patting his burning hair as he rushed toward the little fairy.
Martel leaned against the wall, sitting on the ground. He had just killed all the remaining brain-eating monsters.
But the continuous fighting and bombing attacks, coupled with the crossbow bolt wound in his left shoulder, left him with almost all his strength.
"Clatter clatter," a group of goblins burst through the gate and appeared in the passageway.
A slightly short goblin walked ahead of them, stepping over the corpses of several brain-eating monsters, and came to stand before him.
Martel looked up, his eyes fixed intently on the other person.
"Goblin, you've won," he said, his voice filled with resentment.
"I know," the goblin nodded.
Martel was taken aback for a moment, surprised that a goblin could speak Common, but he immediately changed his expression and laughed bitterly, "I knew it, Chigo was right, you really are a goblin full of wisdom."
"Master of the Storm Brotherhood, Martel Fore," Martel took a deep breath, leaning against the wall as he struggled to his feet. His left arm drooped, unable to lift, and he shakily raised his longsword with his right hand, pointing it at the goblin. "This will be your last opponent. Come on."
The goblin sighed and said, "Isn't it better to be alive?"
"When I was a kid, I was dumped in a mud pit by a centenarian. I knew that the only way to survive was to strive upwards," Martel said, leaning against the wall and looking at the glowing mushrooms on the ceiling of the tunnel. "I knelt by the roadside begging people to throw me a few copper coins, slept in dirty sewers, and was thrown into a mine just for stealing a few loaves of bread."
"I was beaten and verbally abused there, but I was finally able to eat my fill. Someone told me I could become an adventurer and that I could survive. That's when I changed my surname, hoping that I could eat my fill and not be bullied anymore."
"I've done the cheapest quests, been slashed on the face by goblins, and received a lot of disdain from people, but I still persevered step by step to get to where I am today." He shook his head. "I thought this was finally my chance to change my fate, but it's clear that fate played a joke on me."
"You've resisted until now, just to survive, haven't you?" Martel grinned at the goblins.
The goblin nodded and said, "Yes, I'm just trying to survive."
"To have a place to live, to have food to eat, to no longer suffer from hunger and cold, to no longer be hunted down and have our ears cut off," the goblin paused, then continued, "that's what goblins want. You want better, but we just want things to stay the same."
Martel fell silent. He saw the hatred in the eyes of the goblins behind him, and something he was once very familiar with—a tenacity he could see in his own reflection in the water.
He saw this site as a "promotion" and a "reward," but to the creatures before him, it was their "home" for survival.
"It seems we're all just trying to grab onto something in this damned world," he said, straining to hold his longsword. "Come on, once the battle begins, it can't be stopped easily. For my fallen comrades, I must fight to the very last moment."
The goblin nodded, picked up a longsword from the ground, twirled it gracefully, and finally held it in front of his chest.
"Standing before you is the leader of the goblin tribe, the master of the fortress, the heir of the Merlo family, a soul from a mysterious world, the future king of the forest." With a whoosh, he swung his longsword down sharply. "Charles Merlo."

Charles stared at the other man, his eyes wide with surprise, almost dropping his longsword.
"You are the traitor we have been searching for for a long time," said the veteran adventurer in front of him.
"Yes, it's me." Charles nodded.
"How could you—" Martel couldn't believe it at all.
"Surprised? Perhaps this is a joke that fate is playing on me." Charles stood tall with his sword in hand. "Come on." He assumed a sword-wielding stance. In his memory, the method of using a longsword was still vivid. As the son of a nobleman, he had received some combat training when he was young.
Martel suppressed his surprise and struggled to hold up his longsword, but the wobbling tip of the sword clearly betrayed him.
Charles rushed forward quickly and knocked the opponent's longsword away with a "clang".
Then, with a soft "plop," it pierced his own neck.
"Good job," Martel mumbled, spitting out blood, "This ruin is yours now. Make good use of it and survive."
With a "boom," he collapsed to the ground, completely dead.
Charles looked at the longsword in his hand, then glanced at the corpses on the ground. He turned and stood in front of his men.
"We've won!" he shouted, raising his longsword.
"We won."
"We won."
The goblins brandished their weapons, shouting loudly and venting their anger.
Charles smiled as he gazed at his subordinates; the battle against the Storm Brotherhood was finally over.
But there are many more things waiting for him, a wider forest waiting for him, and a more powerful enemy waiting for him.
