Chapter 29: Sending the lunar module to the moon, belonging to...
Luo Fei pressed the answer button, and Director Qin's voice came through the receiver, filled with barely suppressed excitement.
"Xiao Luo, the lunar experimental module has successfully completed all assembly processes and functional tests. From the docking of structural modules and the debugging of the life support system to the calibration of scientific instruments, every step has been carried out in strict accordance with standards."
"The personnel have been selected. This includes two astronauts with space experience and several experimenters, and they are all in good condition. Are you free today? Could you come and send them to the moon?"
Luo Fei sat up in bed, leaned against the headboard, and rubbed his face. Sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, illuminating his fingers.
"I'm free. I'll be there after breakfast. Could you please arrange for someone to meet me in the conference room?"
"Okay! Okay! I'll go arrange it right away!"
Director Qin said "okay" twice and then hung up the phone in a hurry, without even having a chance to say goodbye.
Luo Fei stared at his phone screen for a moment, then chuckled and shook his head.
He understood that Director Qin probably hadn't rested well these past few days and was just barely holding on.
After getting up and washing up, he went downstairs to have breakfast.
Li Xiulan cooked porridge, steamed buns, and also chopped a plate of pickled vegetables.
Luo Fei drank two bowls of porridge and ate three steamed buns.
Li Xiulan sat opposite him, resting her chin on her hand as she watched him eat, a satisfied expression on her face.
Luo Weidong was watering the flowers in the yard. He held the watering can high, and the water jet drew an arc in the air before landing at the base of the rose bushes and slowly seeping into the soil.
After finishing his meal, Luo Fei wiped his mouth with a tissue, stood up, and said to his mother, "Mom, I'm going to Kyoto. I'll be back soon. You and Dad should practice the second set of movements at home and not slack off."
Li Xiulan was clearing away the dishes and chopsticks. Without looking up, she casually replied, "Okay, you can go ahead and do your work."
When Luo Fei walked into the yard, Luo Weidong was still watering the flowers with his back to him. He simply told him to "be careful" and didn't turn around.
Luo Fei hummed in agreement, and with a slight thought, his figure disappeared from the courtyard.
The next second, he was already standing in that conference room in Kyoto. He walked to the door and opened it.
A young man stood in the corridor, dressed in casual clothes, with a straight posture like a pine tree, looking as if he had been standing there for a long time.
As soon as he saw Luo Fei, he quickly stepped forward to greet him, his attitude respectful and polite: "General Luo, Director Qin asked me to pick you up. The car is outside."
Luo Fei nodded and followed him out.
As I exited the building, a black minivan was parked at the entrance, its dark windows completely obscuring the view inside.
The young man opened the back door, Luo Fei bent down and got in, and then the door closed.
The car traveled for about forty minutes, leaving the city and entering the highway, then exiting the highway and turning onto a wide road lined with ginkgo trees on both sides. At the end of the road was a gate with sentries standing at the entrance, the sentries carrying guns and standing upright.
The young man rolled down the car window and handed over an ID. The sentry checked it, glanced into the car, his gaze lingering on Luo Fei's face for a second, then saluted and let him pass.
The car drove through the gate and eventually stopped in front of a gray building.
Luo Fei got out of the car, looked up at the antenna dish and radar dome on the roof, and the flag fluttering in the wind.
This is the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, a place he usually only sees in the news.
Director Qin, dressed in a dark jacket, was already standing at the building entrance waiting.
His mental state has improved considerably, presumably due to the progress in nuclear fusion research, which has put him in a good mood and allowed him to sleep soundly.
Upon seeing Luo Fei, Director Qin quickly stepped forward and shook hands with him.
"Xiao Luo, let's go in and take a look."
The building was very quiet inside. Occasionally, staff members in white coats would hurry past in the corridors, carrying either folders or instruments.
Upon seeing Director Qin and Luo Fei, these people would stop and nod slightly in greeting, their eyes filled with curiosity and awe towards Luo Fei.
Director Qin led Luo Fei to a double-door gate with a sign that read "Final Assembly Workshop".
He pushed open the door, and behind it was a huge factory building with a ceiling at least ten meters high. Light poured down from above, illuminating the entire space as bright as day.
In the center of the factory stands a whole assembly consisting of a cylindrical core module and several functional modules.
Its outer shell is silver-white, covered with a gold heat insulation layer, and several solar panels extend from one side.
Although the windsurfing boards are currently folded up, one can already imagine their magnificent size when unfolded.
This whole structure is about two stories high and wider than a bus. It looks like a miniature version of the space station core module, but it is more compact and has a more specialized function.
A Chinese flag hangs on the outer wall of the experimental chamber.
This flag is not the standard size you usually see; it's a specially made large-sized version, at least twice the normal size.
The bright red color was striking and eye-catching; from a distance, it looked as if the entire experimental chamber was draped in a red cloak.
Director Qin stood beside Luo Fei, pointing to the flag and saying, "This was specially made, two sizes larger than the standard size. Everyone said that this is the first building of the Dragon Kingdom on the moon, so the flag had to be big enough for the whole planet to see."
He paused briefly, then added, "Although there is no wind on the moon and the flag cannot flutter naturally, we have fixed it in place, and it still looks very impressive."
Luo Fei's lips curled slightly upward, but he remained silent.
He turned his head and saw several people in blue work clothes standing next to him. They were all quite old, the youngest of whom looked to be in his early forties.
They stood in a row, their expressions calm, but their eyes gleaming with excitement.
Director Qin explained that these were the personnel who would be going to the moon—two of them were astronauts with spaceflight experience, responsible for daily operations; the other two were experimenters, both experts in their respective fields, responsible for conducting scientific research inside the experimental module.
Four faces, four pairs of eyes, were all fixed on Luo Fei.
One of the astronauts stepped forward and shook hands with Luo Fei. It was a rough hand with large knuckles, clearly the result of years of training.
He smiled slightly and said, "General Luo, we are ready."
Luo Fei nodded, without saying anything like "take care" or "be careful." He knew he would personally send them into the air, so there wouldn't be any safety issues.
He withdrew his hand and turned to Director Qin, asking, "Where on the moon is the experimental module planned to be placed?"
Standing next to Director Qin was an elderly man with gray hair and glasses.
This elderly man is the chief engineer of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. His surname is Qian, and he has dedicated his life to aerospace engineering research. From drawing blueprints when he was young to participating in experimental module projects today, he has been involved in many things.
He stepped forward, holding a tablet computer with a high-precision map of the lunar surface displayed on the screen, covered with densely packed data.
He tapped his finger on the map, zooming in on an area. It was a relatively flat plateau, with no towering mountains or deep craters around it.
"This location was determined through meetings and discussions, and it was not chosen arbitrarily after multiple rounds of demonstrations and simulations. The lighting conditions here are excellent, making the solar panels highly efficient; communication signals are unobstructed, allowing direct connection with Earth; and the geological structure is stable, making it perfectly suitable for placing the experimental module."
Luo Fei leaned closer for a look, silently memorized the latitude and longitude of the location, then returned the tablet to President Qian and said to everyone, "Please wait for me a moment."
Without any explanation or prior notice, Luo Fei vanished into thin air before everyone's eyes.
The scene fell silent instantly.
Some people gasped, some dropped their notebooks, and others gaped in astonishment.
Mr. Qian held the tablet tightly to his chest, his eyes wide open behind his glasses.
Director Qin appeared very calm, picked up a paper cup that someone had placed on the table next to him, and took a sip of water.
About two minutes later, Luo Fei reappeared.
He remained standing in the same spot, maintaining his previous posture, as if he had never left.
He glanced at Mr. Qian and said, "That location is good. I've seen it in person; it's suitable for placing the experimental chamber."
Mr. Qian opened his mouth, seemingly wanting to ask him what it was like to go to the moon, but he looked at Director Qin, who shook his head slightly, so Mr. Qian swallowed back the words he was about to say.
Luo Fei turned to the four astronauts and experimenters who were about to land on the moon and instructed them, "You can go into the cabin now. Do a final check to make sure all systems are functioning properly. Let me know when you're ready."
The four people nodded at the same time and turned to walk towards the experimental chamber.
Leading the way was the oldest astronaut, whose steps were the most steady, each one firm and solid.
The last person to walk was a tall, thin lab technician wearing glasses. He paused when he reached the hatch, glanced back at the factory, then at his still-busy colleagues, and then at the flags hanging on the wall. He then turned around and stepped into the hatch.
The hatch closed slowly.
No one spoke; everyone waited quietly.
The voices of the four people came over the loudspeaker, as they took turns reporting various data.
The broadcast echoed through the empty factory.
"Power supply system is normal."
"Communication system is normal."
"Life support system is functioning normally."
"Fueling complete."
"All systems are ready."
After the last person finished reporting, there was a two-second silence over the loudspeaker, followed by the even more composed voice of the oldest astronaut: "General Luo, the experimental module is ready. Personnel are in position. We are ready to depart."
Luo Fei walked to the experimental chamber and gently placed his hand on the outer shell of the chamber.
He looked up and glanced at the huge flag hanging on the outer wall of the cabin.
He then activated his teleportation ability.
The next second, the experimental module appeared on the lunar surface.
Under the golden sunlight, half of the silvery-white hull was dazzlingly bright, while the other half was hidden in deep darkness.
The solar panels slowly unfolded, resembling two giant wings, gleaming with a faint blue light in the sunlight, and constantly adjusting their angle to always be aligned with the sun.
The large, conspicuous flag on the outer wall of the cabin appeared exceptionally vibrant red under the sunlight, as if it were about to bleed.
It hangs there silently, which in itself is a silent declaration:
This is the territory of the Dragon Kingdom.
