Chapter 146 The Duel Between Man and Monster
Lindsay held his breath, and a few seconds later, a green-skinned monster appeared in the large iron cage that appeared in front of him.
He let out a long sigh of relief, while the corners of his mouth turned up slightly.
Judging from the appearance of the person opposite and the information on the panel, it is indeed the same native orc that the previous contestant encountered!
Linsel stared intently at the orc sleeping in the iron cage. It seemed to be a new monster, not the one that contestant number four had challenged.
"Are you ready?"
The dwarf referee standing in the middle of the platform reminded Lindsay.
"Alright, but 'Tower Shield' referee, I have a request."
"Once the battle begins, even if you see me about to be killed by the monster, don't stop the match or declare me the loser. Believe that I can win."
"Good lad!" The dwarf's voice rose, clearly surprised.
"...What a strange request, 'Wolf Slayer'. Well then, I have no choice but to grant your wish."
The dwarf Ink stroked his brown beard and laughed, then added a sentence.
"You may only make a move after I announce the start of the match, remember that? The other referees around the stage are also watching the stage the entire time, so don't break the rules."
"I've got it."
Inke nodded, then waved to the judges' table below the stage. Linsel then saw the orcs in the iron cage begin to stir.
The orc shook his head and woke up. After figuring out his surroundings, he picked up the thick club that was placed on the bottom of the cage next to him and then slammed it out of the open cage.
Linsel was quite confident about this match; his crossbow was aimed at the head of the native orc, and he was already prepared to fire.
After all, he could easily defeat even ogres, and this orc was two or three times smaller than the ogres' enormous size, yet his strength was similar to theirs. Victory was inevitable; the only question was whether he could win in a spectacular way.
"The match...begins!"
After the dwarf Ink announced the start of the match, he immediately stepped down from the dueling platform, and the moment Linsel heard the command, he had already pulled the trigger of his wooden crossbow.
The crossbow bolt flew out, and before the orc on the other side could even react, a bolt struck its green skull.
Headshot!
This was a good start, but Lindsay naturally didn't think he could kill his opponent with a single crossbow bolt. He loaded bolts from his quiver at his waist, ready to fire a follow-up shot.
The orc did not fall after being hit in the head by an arrow, but he was unsteady on his feet.
[Native Orc, Monster, Health: 192/280, Armor: 0, Minor Head Wound]
The orc's skull was surprisingly hard; the wooden crossbow provided by the tournament couldn't penetrate it. However, a single headshot took away nearly a third of his life. Two more shots should be enough.
Linsel pulled back the crossbow string and loaded the bolt. By this time, the native orcs on the other side had recovered.
His fangs trembled incessantly, and ignoring the blood continuously flowing from his head, he roared and charged directly at Lin Sai.
Undeterred by the orc's roar, Linsel continued to aim at the orc's head and fired another shot.
However, the enemy seemed to be on guard this time. As they charged, they used their thick clubs to push forward, and the second crossbow bolt hit the clubs directly, being blocked by luck.
Seeing this, Lin Sai frowned slightly. It was obviously too late to reload a third crossbow bolt now, so he dropped the wooden crossbow without hesitation and put on a sword and shield, intending to use the shield to block the orcs' impending charge.
Just as Linsel raised his shield, the orc rushed in front of him and, taking advantage of the momentum, slammed his thick club down on him.
Thump, click.
Linsel was thrown backward by the impact, and the wooden shield in his left hand shattered, which surprised him.
The orcs are strong, but are the wooden crossbows and shields provided by the tournament really that bad?
As the shield shattered, Linsel instinctively swung his right hand forward, unleashing a skillful counterattack that caught his opponent off guard. The tip of his iron sword sliced through the grayish-green belly, leaving a long, bleeding wound.
The native orc let out a low growl of pain, his eyes wide with shock, and he took two steps back, clutching his abdomen.
"Uh-huh, huh-huh..."
Linsel naturally couldn't understand the orc language, but his attention wasn't on that; it was on the iron sword in his hand.
The sword has broken! Where is the tip?
Out of the corner of his eye, he glanced around and saw the tip of his sword fall at the orc's feet.
This weapon is really useless. Is it really not as good as my iron sword made by the dwarf "Iron Hammer"?
Feeling a bit heavy-hearted, he casually tossed aside the broken iron sword and then took the two-handed axe from his back.
After confirming that the sword wound to his abdomen was shallow and not fatal, the orc on the other side seemed to regain his composure, swinging his thick club in front of him in a small motion, but he did not take any further steps.
He stopped attacking, which suggests that this "big greenskin" is not entirely without intelligence. It must have been because it saw the two-handed axe in his hand that it refrained from charging at him again.
However, after the previous events, Linssay was now quite worried about the quality of the two-handed axe in his hand.
Although it looks very sharp, it is lighter than expected when held in the hand, so it is hard to say whether it is really sturdy.
It would be unwise to try to outmuscle this massive orc, so Linsel thought for a moment, then held his two-handed axe horizontally in front of him with one end of the handle to the left, and easily swung it twice in front of the orc, while making a hooking gesture with his other hand, accompanied by a disdainful expression.
If such a large monster has any intelligence, it should be able to understand my contempt and mockery. Let it take the initiative to attack, so that I can better find its weakness.
Sure enough, when his opponent saw Lindsay's actions, his eyes flashed with ferocity, his fangs twitched, and he could no longer stand it.
"Ugh!!!"
The orc roared and charged again.
The provocation was successful; it seems this monster is easily angered, which will be very advantageous for my upcoming battle.
Linsset flashed his long axe, charging up his power; his [Heavy Strike] combat skill was already ready.
The controls feel great right now. Try using the [Heavy Strike] skill in combination with the Great Axe to see how effective it is against living creatures other than scarecrows.
As the orc charged toward Linse, he leaped up, his thick club aimed straight at Linse's head. Linse, having already gathered his strength, swung his great axe with a gust of wind toward the orc's head as well.
A slight pain came from my left shoulder, but then the force transmitted from the axe handle to the blade was that familiar feeling of cutting meat.
Although the orc's thick club struck Linsel's shoulder, his skull had already separated from his neck, and a cloud of blood mist sprayed out from the blood-red hole that had been slashed open.
