Chapter 96 Dispersing the Refugees

Lindsay and the female knight Karina, along with eight others, gradually approached the south gate.

The south gate of Wind and City was tightly shut. As Linse got closer to the gate, he could hear the commotion outside the city growing louder and louder.

Karina led the adventurers up the city gate tower and onto the city wall.

The tense guards on the city wall saluted when they saw the female knight Karina arrive.

"Sir Knight, you see, although the refugees below cannot breach the city walls, they are crowding outside the city gates, which is not a solution."

Looking down from the battlements, Linssé saw, just as the guards had said, a dense crowd, three or four layers deep, gathered below the city wall in the torchlight.

"Do not make any rash moves. The guards will arrive soon and will maintain order."

Karina gave orders to the guards on duty, then asked, "You've been standing guard here for so long, have you spotted any cult members hiding among the refugees?"

"No, but those cultists are definitely mixed in with the crowd! Because when we were on guard duty, we spotted a few suspicious-looking guys down below the city walls. They were hysterical and their behavior was unlike that of ordinary people."

"What did these guys do?"

"They were waving their arms and shouting something like 'Dakur' under the city wall. We didn't have permission from our superiors and were afraid of disturbing the crowd, so we didn't shoot them with crossbows and bows."

"You did the right thing. As long as the city gates are kept closed, they can't incite refugees to flood into the city."

"Look! What's that in the distance!"

A guard standing on the city wall shouted loudly, and Linsset quickly scanned the area outside the city.

Several bright red lights suddenly appeared and flickered on the edge of the refugee area outside the crowd.

"Broken Arrow" gazed into the distance: "Those wouldn't happen to be summoning arrays for cultists, would they? I think they probably are!"

If it really was a summoning circle, Lindsay thought of the flesh golems that had been summoned.

If too many of these summoned monsters appear and launch a forced siege, it will likely cause considerable trouble, and it's unclear whether the magic circle will summon even more powerful monsters.

At that moment, the sound of footsteps running could be heard from below the city gate.

The female knight looked into the city and saw that the city's reinforcements, numbering thirty or forty, had arrived.

"Adventurers, considering the magic arrays that may appear outside the city, we must take the initiative and destroy them!"

The adventurers responded and ran down the city wall.

Under the female knight's command, the guards formed a spear wall defensive formation behind the city gate, and then the guards standing by the gate slowly opened it.

The guards advanced, with several carrying torches and others with bows and crossbows, while the adventurers followed at the rear, preparing to leave the city.

When the refugees outside the city saw the city gates wide open, they tried to rush into the city, but they were immediately driven back by the spear wall formed by the guards.

The female knight's command echoed in Linsset's ears like a loudspeaker.

"Everyone, stop immediately! Don't be misled by the cultists, leave the city gate area right now!"

Otherwise, at this critical moment, they will be identified as cult members on the spot and executed!

Lindsay caught a glimpse of something in Karina's hand—a stone? Anyway, it seemed that this thing amplified her command.

Upon hearing this powerful warning, the refugees gradually quieted down and began to back away.

However, a few troublemakers remained standing still, pulling out some crude weapons, seemingly wanting to fight the guards.

"Everyone, seize and execute these cult members!"

The guards obeyed the order and skillfully changed from a square formation to a line formation, then charged forward and turned the stubborn elements into mincemeat.

Lindsay approached the murdered men; he was now somewhat used to such bloody scenes.

He lifted the tattered clothes of the corpses and carefully searched for Dakur's wound marks on the flesh riddled with holes.

"Lindsay, what are you doing?" Claire sensed something was off.

"I'm confirming some things."

Lindsay discovered that most people had those very conspicuous and strange wound patterns on their bodies, but one person did not have them.

This refugee isn't a cult member? Then why is he with these crazy cult members? Never mind, that's not important.

Karina walked up to Lindsay: "These cultists were killed by the guards, please don't get it wrong."

"Well, I was just casually looking at what they looked like."

By this time, the crowd of refugees gathered at the south gate had been dispersed.

A bronze-level adventurer breathed a sigh of relief: "Looks easy. Now all we need to do is destroy those summoning circles in the distance."

Karina had already drawn her half-sword and shield: "Don't let your guard down, adventurer. There might be cultists lurking in the shadows!"

Could there be cultists lying in ambush? Linsel scanned his surroundings with [Darkvision] but did not find any suspicious enemies.

However, Lindsay was still prepared, as he had already loaded his newly purchased leaf-burst crossbow with bolts.

The group had entered the refugee area and continued to move towards the glowing red magic circle.

In the temporary tents and simple wooden sheds along the way, many of the refugees who had been dispersed earlier had returned. Some were crouching down, while others stepped back and bowed their heads, indicating that they dared not continue to hinder the mission.

Several screams of refugees came from the other side. Linsel, relying on his [sensitive sense of smell], confirmed the source of the smell: the summoned flesh golems, and there seemed to be more than one.

Among them, he also smelled an unusual scent of flesh, which was stronger than that of the other flesh golems and made him more sensitive to it.

Could it be that a new summoned monster has appeared?

As they got closer to the red glowing magic circle, the group discovered that three flesh golems were heading their way.

The golem that was walking at the end of the procession appeared to be slightly larger than the others.

Linsel focused his attention on checking the panel.

[Enhanced Flesh Golem, Monster, Health 330/330, Armor: 0]

Is it an enhanced version of the Flesh Golem? Killing it will allow me to regain my monster abilities!

"Archers, fire a volley of arrows! Everyone else, retreat! Leave these fleshy monsters to me and the adventurers!"

Karina used the mysterious stone in her hand to amplify her commands, and the guards standing behind her immediately fired a volley of arrows. However, these arrows struck the flesh golem and did not inflict any particularly effective damage.

"It seems that bows and arrows are still not working," "Broken Arrow" sighed. "These chunks of flesh are quite troublesome. To defeat them, you need to be agile enough, and it's easy to damage your armor in the process."

"Don't worry, adventurers, go ahead and fight!" Karina said confidently.
