Chapter 188 Extortion?
Chief Arthur frowned.
Based on his years of work experience and intuition, he could sense the extraordinary qualities of this young man, Suren, who often appeared too composed.
However, he had never seen the other party make a move and did not know the extent of his strength.
Moreover, could Suren really handle a monster that has been fused with demonic power all by himself, unarmed?
In the past, which of those exorcists registered with the bureau didn't walk on thin ice when going on a mission?
Holy water, silver bullets—even green onions and crosses—require several people to work together as a team.
He sighed.
"Let's contact the local police station and have them send two tactical teams to stand by on the outskirts, just in case—"
Before Arthur could finish speaking, Suren's voice came through the communicator, sounding unusually calm.
"Resolved."
Arthur and Anjou exchanged a glance and simultaneously breathed a sigh of relief.
Liz's cold smile froze.
She put down her phone, pouted somewhat resentfully, and muttered under her breath, "Just lucky. I could have done it too."
In the hospital corridor, Suren kicked the motionless monster lying on the ground.
"A staged accident?"
Before his punch even touched the monster, it shrank back into Emily's mind on its own.
The torn skin and flesh closed up again, leaving only a closed scar.
He looked at Emily's head, which had returned to normal, and sneered, "Coward."
"Mr. Suren, now that the target has been subdued, you can bring her back now."
Arthur's voice came through the headphones.
"No rush."
Suren dragged the unconscious Emily and turned to look into the depths of the corridor.
"Since this hospital is owned by the Armitage family, I'm thinking of going down and taking a look. Maybe I'll find some surprises?"
He ignored Arthur's dissuasion through the earpiece and led his men down the stairs.
The space on the second basement level is much more oppressive than the space above, and the air is not circulated year-round, resulting in a persistent odor.
Suren looked at the fresh footprints on the ground and said nothing.
But the scene before him made him unconsciously frown.
This is a long corridor with single cells separated by iron bars on both sides.
Each cell contains an operating table with restraints to secure the patient.
So much time has passed, and these beds are now rusty, the sheets are rotten to shreds, and there are large patches of black bloodstains on the surrounding ground.
Walking further in, you'll find a long, rectangular hall.
Several iron tables were neatly arranged in the hall, and the walls were covered with various shackles and instruments of torture. Several tiger chairs were also placed side by side below.
There is a horizontal iron gate on each side of the hall.
Suren walked over and opened one of the doors, letting in a gust of sea breeze carrying a fishy smell.
There were no other rooms outside the iron gate, and below lay the turbulent sea.
The waves crashed against the rocks with a roar, and several seagulls frolicked on the water.
Suren stood by the door, as if she could see many years ago, when children and mental patients were tortured to death here and thrown down the opening to be fed to sharks.
Even the incineration and disposal steps are skipped.
"Come out."
Suren didn't turn his head, looking at the rolling waves, and said calmly.
"Suren, who are you talking to?"
Arthur's puzzled voice came through the earpiece.
Suren did not answer, but closed the iron gate and walked behind an iron table in the corner.
"No—don't do it! It's me!"
A blonde girl wearing a pink cardigan cautiously peeked out from behind the iron table.
Sydney held up her hands, clutching a stack of file folders. She looked completely innocent, trying her best to convey her harmlessness.
After discovering that her sister had turned into a monster and escaped, she wanted to find out what had happened.
It wasn't until she learned from her mother that her sister was actually adopted that she tracked down the hospital and tried to find out what had happened back then.
She didn't expect that as soon as she stepped into the basement, she would hear noises upstairs. Terrified, she could only hide there and dare not make a sound, hoping that the other party would leave soon.
"You came here to clear your sister's name?"
Suren looked at the file in her hand and asked.
Sydney nodded vigorously.
She saw Emily being held in Suren's hand, and her expression showed a hint of fear.
Suren tossed Emily in front of her and said, "It's alright, your sister has returned to normal. The demon that was parasitizing her mind has temporarily retreated."
Upon hearing this, Sydney mustered her courage and stepped forward.
She hesitated for a moment, then reached out and touched the back of Emily's head.
After a moment, she breathed a sigh of relief and looked up at Suren: "Thank you."
Just then—
"Sulen! Retreat immediately! Now!"
Suddenly, Charlie's slightly urgent warning came through the earpiece.
"Surveillance footage shows several black SUVs without license plates heading towards your hospital, and they are expected to arrive within five minutes!"
"and----"
Charlie's voice carried a hint of barely suppressed shock and fear, "I zoomed in on the surveillance footage along the way and extracted the facial features of the people in those cars—"
"They are not normal humans. Their bodies and faces bear very obvious inhuman features, like—a fusion of demons and humans!"
Charlie typed on the keyboard and sent several blurry screenshots to Suren's phone.
Inside the base, Arthur and Anjou huddled together in front of the screen, their expressions turning grave as they watched the inhuman, ghostly monsters on the monitor.
"Stop dawdling down there! Find somewhere to hide right now!"
Liz grabbed the microphone and shouted, "Look at you! I told you to leave sooner, but you wouldn't listen. Now look what happened!"
"They're definitely after that experimental subject, Emily."
Charlie quickly offered an evacuation plan: "If evacuation is impossible, just leave her there as bait. The hospital is so big, they won't deliberately search for her."
"As long as you hide well, I will erase all the surveillance footage of you as you pass by, and no one will be able to find your location."
I listened to all sorts of anxious advice and warnings through my headphones.
Suren looked at the screenshots on her phone, at the demonic features on these people: "It's not that complicated."
He ignored Sydney behind him and walked out of the basement.
"Are you crazy?!"
Liz was so angry at this bland reply that she jumped up and down.
She turned to Arthur, who was standing beside her with a furrowed brow, and said, "Chief, let me go!"
"I can control fire; these monsters are no match for me! I'll go and get him!"
Seeing that Director Arthur did not react, Liz gritted her teeth and spoke again.
"Chief! He was introduced by Mr. Rodin! If something happens to him here, we won't be able to explain it to Mr. Rodin!"
Arthur sighed upon hearing this.
He was just about to nod in agreement to Liz's request when he heard Charlie's voice from the computer.
"I think you guys should consider buying some groceries and having a celebration feast."
Charlie's voice no longer carried the panic of before, but instead was filled with excitement and exhilaration.
He typed on the keyboard and zoomed in on the monitoring screen on the main screen.
Arthur and the others turned their heads and looked at the scene unfolding on the screen, their pupils shrinking slightly.
