Chapter 011: The Prologue Church
"Come, young man, let me tell you the story behind this skull!"
Thompson put on a mysterious expression and gestured for Loran to come closer to listen.
Loran moved closer, but then noticed Thompson had bad breath, so she moved back a little. "Well, go ahead."
"I just used a powerful spell to travel through time, connecting the past and present, and I experienced the story that happened inside this skull as if I were right there!"
Thompson's tone began to turn serious.
"This skull is related to a church from 800 years ago, the Presbyterian Church!"
"This church is extremely sinister. History books record it in great detail. They can bring some kind of never-before-seen monster into this world through some kind of... sinister ritual."
Loran was shocked. A monster never before seen had descended upon this world? Then...did he count himself?
"You might be curious about what the Pre-Oriented Church is, since it's been a long time since then. So, are you curious?" Thompson blinked.
Loran and Ye stared at each other, nodding repeatedly. "Yes, we're very curious. Please tell us."
Thompson looked satisfied and said mysteriously, "The Church of the Order, the first word 'Ordination' means sequence number. They believe that there is more than just our world; there may be other worlds beyond the heavens."
"For example, they call our world World Number 1, and other worlds World Number 2, Number 3, and so on."
"This is the origin of their first word. But this first word alone would not make this church the greatest evil church in history. The key is the second word, 'Lin'."
"So, guess how to explain the word '临'?" Thompson seemed quite interested in the interaction with his listener, asking the question.
Loran thought for a moment and replied, "To allow beings from other numbered worlds to descend upon this world? 'Lin' means 'to descend,' right?"
"That's absolutely right. Through some evil sacrifices and strange rituals, they actually accomplished the descent ritual. The monsters that appeared for the first time were things that the ancients had never heard of or seen before."
"Of course, now that I've read books, I know that this proves I'm a bit better than the ancients..." Thompson stroked his chin.
Loran said speechlessly, "Uh, that's not the point. This is all historical knowledge. What else did you see through the skull?"
Thompson smiled mysteriously, "This is the key point now. Through the skull, I glimpsed some of its story. The owner of this skull was a former member of the Presbyterian Church!"
"I wonder what this guy used on his head, his skull hasn't decayed to this day... Or is he a remnant of the Church of Order? But that's unlikely, the Church of Order's lineage has long been annihilated, if there were any remnants, they would definitely have been discovered."
"So the most likely explanation is that this guy used preservatives on his head!"
Listening to Thompson's nonsensical rant, Loran pressed, "Besides preservatives and stuff, what else did you see? You couldn't have fainted from being scared by preservatives, could you?"
"Hey, young man, don't be in such a hurry. I was just about to say that, besides this, I also saw a terrifying monster that descended upon him before his death. I only caught a glimpse of its appearance, but it looked somewhat like mud..."
"By the way, I want to reiterate that I didn't faint from fright. Rather, the mental burden of spying was too great, which caused me to be affected by the magic. In terms of appearance, that monster wasn't actually that scary."
"And that is precisely the value of this skull. Even a mediocre spellcaster like myself can glimpse some of its secrets. If it were given to someone more powerful, perhaps they could learn even more and uncover the truth behind the decline of the Church of the Presbyterian Church."
Thompson said regretfully.
Loran noticed a blind spot and asked, "Don't we have history books now? Why can't they reconstruct the truth about the Adventist Church back then?"
"Hey, kids these days don't read enough books. The Pre-Advent Church rose and fell with it. They ruined their own church, disappearing in just a few months, and a lot of compelling evidence was destroyed along with it."
"The kingdom was already riddled with problems at that time. It could be said that the Church of the Order was just one step away from ruling the kingdom, but then this happened. As a result, everyone only knew how terrible the Church of the Order was, but did not understand the truth about the decline of the Church of the Order."
"And you have a really good lead in your hands, which might fetch a lot of money for historians," Thompson rubbed his hands together. "So, when are you going to give me my three gold coins?"
Loran pouted. "Can you stop getting so attached to money? I haven't even finished my question yet. I have a question: there must be a lot of skulls or objects like this, right?"
"According to you, those powerful mages can glimpse the truths lost in the annals of history. What if they harbor wicked intentions and try to uncover the methods of the descent of the Orders, causing those monsters to reappear in the world?"
Thompson nodded in agreement. "Young man, your idea is very forward-thinking. In fact, many people have tried this kind of unorthodox approach."
"But unfortunately, the language of those Adventists is comparable to bird language, with no standard for reference. To this day, no one has been able to decipher it, so our worries are completely unnecessary."
Loran's pupils contracted. He seemed to have made a connection to something, namely the talent he had recently acquired, "Language Proficiency".
Language Proficiency.Max (Unlocked at 10 Adventure Points): You can gradually master the various languages that exist around you.
If he possesses the ability to speak languages and uses his clairvoyance to peer into the past stories of the skull, will he be able to gradually understand the language of these so-called cultists?
When the idea came to mind, Loran was startled. This thing was not to be spied on. What if he heard some devil's bait and was bewitched?
However, Loran decided to wait until he had enough adventure points before giving it a try, since it could potentially unravel many mysteries.
"Thank you, Mr. Thompson." Loran stood up and gave a slight bow, then rummaged through the skull, put it into his backpack, and turned to leave.
Thompson was taken aback, and quickly stopped Loran, saying in a wronged tone, "Hey, young man, didn't you promise to give me 3 gold coins? I told you everything I knew without reservation."
Lorraine coughed twice and said seriously, "Mr. Thompson, you wouldn't want Mr. Mark Warren to find out you're selling counterfeit goods, would you?"
"This...you, you, you, young man, how come you only know these underhanded tricks? You should have a conscience, a conscience, have you been eaten by dogs?" Thompson was so anxious that he could only stare blankly.
Lorraine pointed to Brian, who was dozing beside her. "You mean my conscience has been eaten by it? Perhaps, but Mr. Thompson, compared to me, your conscience is the one that's been eaten by dogs."
"Besides... I just don't have the money right now. I didn't say I wouldn't pay you back. I'll pay you back when I have the money. Keeping your secret also comes at a cost. Can you understand young people these days?"
"You..." Thompson's face flushed slightly, but he finally gave in. He couldn't let this guy ruin the reputation of his antique shop.
Thompson's tone softened slightly, and he sighed, "Then you agree that you can't tell anyone what you saw today."
Lorraine nodded. "Yes, definitely, Mr. Tang. We're close friends despite our age difference; it's a rare find."
"A friendship across generations? Get the hell out of here, you brat! I don't want to see you." Thompson pushed him away, kicking Lorraine out.
"Alright, I'll come over for tea sometime!"
