Archer's Adventure Manual
Chapter 025: The Fall
The dozen or so adventurers led by Vance could have chosen to leave and return towards Rockfall Town, but they did not. They chose to stay and help the villagers.
The reason they made this choice was that these adventurers had all read an adventure novel called "The Warrior of the Wilderness".
The novel is about the adventures of the protagonist, Thorne.
On his adventurous journey, Thorne punishes evil and upholds justice; he explores demonic caves, rescues princesses, climbs mountain peaks, and slays dragons.
The adventurers almost all grew up listening to his stories, which meant that although they outwardly fought for their own interests, a seed of justice was always buried deep in their hearts.
Helping the village was not for any other reason than the sense of justice in my heart.
While the village was still in the midst of tense preparations, someone suddenly heard a terrifying roar coming from not far away.
Suddenly, a wild boar appeared in people's field of vision. Reflected by the rain, the textured rock-like skin around its head and the bloodstains remaining on its mouth were clearly visible.
The three-meter-tall behemoth was enough to make everyone gasp in shock.
"Everyone, get ready! Wild boars are coming!" the village chief shouted. All the villagers put down their traps and came to help defend against them.
"Spear throwers, get ready! Once you're within range, give it a good stab!" the villagers commanded in an orderly fashion.
The archers among the adventurers led by Vance also raised their bows and arrows, aiming at the wild boar in the distance.
The wild boar was getting closer and closer, and it started running, eventually running into the tripwires set up by the villagers.
"Bang!" The scene of the wild boar tripping over the rope and falling over, as imagined, did not happen. Instead, the wooden stake used to secure the rope was pulled up by the wild boar and uprooted.
Faced with the shallow pit traps dug by the villagers, the wild boars used their powerful jumping ability to leap over several traps and rush straight to the village entrance.
"Spears!"
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh!" The villagers at the village entrance threw their javelins in unison. The hit rate was not high, but fortunately there were enough javelins, and many of them hit the wild boars.
However, the stone spearheads were ineffective at causing any damage when they came into contact with the thick rocky skin of the mountain boar.
All stones have the same hardness, so it is quite difficult to break a large stone with a small stone.
The adventurers' arrows also landed on the mountain boar, but just like the problem with the spear throwers, they couldn't break through the boar's defenses at all!
Vance frowned as he looked at the mountain boar. He carefully examined its entire body and found that only a small part of its abdomen was exposed, while most of the rest was covered by hard rock.
The villagers' spears were simply not accurate enough to hit their targets...
Not to mention, even if you hit the target, you still have to consider the wild boar's thick layer of fat.
Just as Vance was pondering a solution, another earth-shattering roar came from afar, and yet another enormous figure appeared in everyone's sight.
"Another...another wild boar?!" The village chief's mouth dropped open.
Vance's brow furrowed even deeper, but he wasn't surprised by the arrival of yet another wild boar, as the report indicated there were three such mountain boars.
However, these wild boars were more difficult to deal with than he had imagined.
Mountain boars are already quite defensive, and after undergoing some unknown transformation, they have developed a thick layer of stone skin on their bodies. This is undoubtedly fatal to a town where mages are scarce, making it impossible to effectively break through their defenses.
"Clang, clang, clang!" The nearby wild boars had already begun attacking the wooden spike defenses at the village entrance, but the spikes were negligible in their damage.
But their thick fangs can easily destroy splinters.
The villagers kept throwing spears, trying to drive the big guy away, but to no avail. It seemed that no one could stop the wild boar's advance.
Seeing the dire situation, the village chief immediately activated the backup plan. He began shouting, "Retreat! Retreat! Everyone, move to the back of the village! We can't stop these wild boars!"
This was a last resort; unable to deal with the wild boar, they had no choice but to opt for a safer retreat.
Some retired knights from the villages who were capable of fighting chose to stay, wanting to see just how strong this wild boar really was!
"Boom boom boom!" Facing the ineffective wooden spikes, the mountain boar charged straight into the village, and the village guards, retired knights, and militiamen began to tremble at the sight of this huge creature.
Their equipment was not bad; most of them possessed iron swords, and a few even had high-defense equipment like iron armor. They also had the advantage in numbers, and for a time, they were able to fight the mountain boars to a standstill.
"Steel Slash!" An old man with a white beard, wearing armor, jumped up and unleashed a sword technique, slashing fiercely at the wild boar's body, seemingly shattering the boar's rocky skin.
"Old man, you're as dashing as ever!" another retired knight laughed.
"Yes, anyone who dares to attack our village will be utterly destroyed!"
Before he could finish speaking, the old man in iron armor was knocked away by a wild boar.
The mountain boar's eyes turned bloodshot, and its size increased several notches, seemingly... it had entered a berserk state!
Those who were initially able to fight back were instantly overwhelmed and forced to retreat, and the mountain boars did not actually suffer much damage.
"what!"
"Pfft!"
The blood serves as a warning to people to stop pursuing this dangerous creature.
People began to scatter and flee, realizing that they were no match for the monster.
Another wild boar also rushed into the village, and the two boars began to wreak havoc on the village.
The villagers in the distance, watching this scene amidst the heavy rain, all fell silent.
"Waaaaah~ Our home... is gone..." A little girl clung tightly to her mother's clothes, her face streaked with tears and rain.
Although Luoxi Village is not large, it was built by their hard work every day, but now they can only watch helplessly as these beasts destroy it.
"Village chief, I'm so sorry, it seems we can't beat these guys..." The wounded old knights reunited with the villagers in a sorry state.
They were indeed formidable fighters in their youth, but time waits for no one. It's already quite an achievement for them to be able to unleash their skills now. If they were to be hit a few more times, they might really be on their way to the afterlife.
"Is there really no way?"
The people were disheartened. The cost of rebuilding their homes was too high, and perhaps the nobles of Rockfall Town would no longer care about the fate of this land.
They will become homeless migrants in the future, where even survival will not be guaranteed...
