Chapter 083: Monsters Surround the Village
For the people of this village, this night was just another ordinary day.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, except for the appearance of two mentally ill adventurers during the day.
But it wasn't a big deal, and many residents just laughed it off.
As for Loran and his companions, they had witnessed several other vivid examples firsthand, so there was no need to elaborate further; they considered it just a minor incident, at most a little extra caution...
Knight Com was quite vigilant and assigned two extra men to guard the granary, suspecting that the two adventurers' words were just bait to distract them.
Those monsters are probably really after the abundant food reserves here; he should keep a close watch on them.
Late at night, Brian, who was sleeping on the ground, twitched his ears. He sensed a subtle sound coming from the ground.
In the quiet of the night, almost no one is out and about, so any loud noises are quite noticeable. Brian could clearly hear these noises... quite loud!
"Woof woof woof!" Brian barked twice, stepping on Loran to wake him up.
Loran was jolted awake from his dream. Seeing Brian on his body, he instinctively reached for his dagger.
Last night's experience is still fresh in my mind. If that Elfin were to impersonate Brian again to play tricks on me, that would be terrible.
"Brian?"
"Master! Something's happened!" Brian said urgently.
Hearing Brian speak, Loran felt relieved, but a sense of unease lingered. He pressed for an answer, asking, "What's going on?"
Brian pressed his ear to the floor again and said earnestly, "I feel it, a vibration... It seems to be the vibration caused by many creatures stomping on the ground together."
"Many creatures trampled the ground?" Loran was taken aback. He recalled what Lin Wen had described that afternoon... disaster, densely packed?
This easily leads one to think of something bad... Now Brian has noticed something amiss, and he doesn't want to gamble!
"Brian, go wake up Lin Wen and the others. We'll split up!"
Loran and Brian ran quickly out of the room and knocked on their teammates' doors.
The adventurers were still very alert when they slept, and they got up shortly after hearing the knock on the door. After confirming Loran Brian's identity, they opened the door.
Lin Wen opened the door and saw Luo Lan. He blinked and asked curiously, "Hey, what are you doing in my room in the middle of the night instead of sleeping? Aren't you afraid things might get out of hand?"
Loran was speechless and didn't have time to chat with this guy. He quickly said, "Linwen, Brian felt the ground shaking. It seems like something is approaching the village!"
Lin Wen, who was still a little sleepy, suddenly widened her eyes. "What did you say?!"
Soon, the members of the Dog Dagger Squad got up. Regardless of whether the information Brian had obtained was true or not, they needed to verify it.
Losing a little sleep in the middle of the night is a minor issue, but if a monster really attacks the village, that would be a real disaster!
Loran and his companions left the inn and headed towards the outskirts of the village under the cover of night.
"Brian, you might not have heard very clearly on the wooden floor of the hotel just now. Listen again now," Loran said.
Brian pressed his ear to the ground and listened for a while longer. Then, with a look of astonishment, he exclaimed, "This...it's clearer now! I'm pretty sure there are lots of things moving slowly!"
"Damn it, could those two adventurers' crazy words have this hidden meaning?!" Noah frowned, this was the first time in his life he had encountered such a thing.
Let alone him, even a team like the Blade of Excellence has never experienced something like this... The probability of it happening is extremely low, so how did they end up encountering it?
"Linwen, Brian, you two are quick. We'll try to leave from one direction of the village. You two check the road ahead, and if any monsters appear, turn back immediately," Loran analyzed.
Lin Wen nodded, preparing to take Brian with him and set off.
Finita quickly said, "Linwen, it's hard to see at night. I'll perform a little magic trick for you!"
After saying that, Finita took out some powder and put a pair of wooden-framed glasses on Linwen, then performed a magic trick on the glasses—night vision.
This trick grants a person the same vision as certain animals in the dark, allowing them to see more clearly.
"Okay, thanks. Brian and I will be right back!"
Brian followed Lin Wen and rushed off in one direction.
Loran said gravely, "I really hope those monsters haven't completely surrounded us yet... otherwise, we might still have a sliver of hope."
Finita, following behind, felt her heart pounding. She didn't know what this thing meant, but she knew they were in danger, and she was terrified.
But she couldn't say it out loud; she couldn't shake her teammates' morale.
Finita took deep breaths to calm herself.
Loran and his group continued forward, and soon they were met by Lin Wen and Brian, who had returned.
In the darkness, Lin Wen's expression was obscured; only her extremely heavy tone could be heard.
"Loran, Noah... the situation is not optimistic."
Upon hearing this, the three of them felt their hearts sink to the bottom.
Noah said, "What's going on? Has the village been surrounded? How many monsters are there? Even if there are forty or fifty, we still have a chance to break through. Now's the time!"
"Densely packed...so many! And those are monsters I've never seen before! They...look terrifying. They have the bodies of goblins but the heads of kobolds, like some kind of cobbled-together creation."
"They stood in rows and rows, moving slowly and orderly towards Inada Village. They didn't want to let anyone from Inada Village escape!"
"If we try to break through, we'll definitely be surrounded and beaten by rows of those monsters... It'll be extremely difficult!"
Lin Wen sighed and said, "We only have a few people. This plan is less likely to succeed than if we garrison the village and coordinate with the knights to defend it together."
Noah said somewhat unwillingly, "Really, there isn't a single flaw?"
Lin Wen shook his head. "No... It's completely airtight, just like the elite kobolds we encountered before. They're all neatly arranged. It seems like they have a leader who ordered them to do this."
"These guys aren't like the scattered goblins we've killed before; they really know how to maximize their numerical advantage."
After discussing for a while, Loran and his companions had no choice but to return to Rice Paddy Village, where they needed the village's help to defend against the monsters' attack.
During their battles with the monsters, chaos ensues, and it is through this chaos that a glimmer of hope for survival may be found.
Lin Wen and Brian set off without stopping; they needed to inform the knights as quickly as possible so that they could mobilize their forces.
Loran stared intently at the dark sky, a bloody storm about to sweep through the entire rice paddy village.
