Archer's Adventure Manual
Chapter 084: Struggle Before the Crisis
"Hello, madam. Your knight might be unhappy to be disturbing us so late," the guard on night watch said politely to Lin Wen, without immediately chasing her away.
Lin Wen said anxiously, "Quickly inform the knights! Monsters are gathering near the village; we're in trouble!"
The guard was shocked. The matter was serious and he could not bear the consequences. He quickly went to report the situation.
Lin Wen didn't care about anything else and followed directly. She soon met Knight Com.
Knight Com naturally recognized Linwen, who vouched for the authenticity of everything she saw with the reputation of an adventurer.
Com immediately dispatched scouts to gather intelligence and promptly notified the other knights.
If other knights heard Lin Wen's words, they would most likely not believe them, but it would be completely different if Com informed the other knights; his words would carry a lot of weight.
The knights were initially shocked, but then quickly began to deploy their guards.
Regardless of whether what Com said is true or not, taking action first is definitely the right thing to do, since there's nothing to lose by doing so. But if what Com said is true, then not being prepared will really be the end of us.
As a region with thriving commerce, the knights employed a large number of mercenaries. Many of these mercenaries were adventurers who came to the region seeking stable employment, and their combat abilities were quite decent.
While mobilizing these mercenaries, they also went to mobilize the troops of the nobles stationed in Hama Town, which were all crucial forces.
Com's scouts acted swiftly, and within minutes they sent back intelligence that, just as Lin Wen had said, a group of unknown monsters were slowly approaching and surrounding Inada Village.
Furthermore, Knight Com understood the gravity of the situation; he had considered the possibility that the scouts might not return.
But now the scout has returned and promptly reported the situation...
If a scout sees so many monsters, his first thought will definitely be to protect himself. If he finds a weakness in the monsters' encirclement, he will definitely try to escape instead of foolishly running to report to him.
Now that the scout has returned to report the situation, it means that the scout could not escape, and the monsters' encirclement has been initially formed!
Keep in mind, the scout before him was a Black Iron-level adventurer he had found before; his strength was naturally beyond question...
"Do we have a chance to break through?" Knight Com asked gravely.
Although he possessed a rich fiefdom, none of that mattered more than his life. As long as he's alive, there's always hope...
But he received the cold, knowing answer he already knew.
"Sir Knight, the defenses are impenetrable. Even I cannot find any possibility of breaking through. We can only seek a sliver of hope amidst the chaos."
Knight Com narrowed his eyes. "Is this the only way? Gather our forces; only through battle can we seize a sliver of hope!"
"Yes!" the scout replied.
As night fell, the entire village was on edge.
The guards hurriedly went to the village to take up their posts. After receiving accurate information, the administrators of Hamo Town who were stationed there woke up all the residents of the village.
Furthermore, the commotion was kept small, and residents were instructed to leave their homes quietly and follow instructions. This was an order, and no specific reasons were given.
Residents have certain rights on a regular basis, but when it comes to critical moments, the lords still have the greatest authority to command and demand things from them.
If an adventurer has a certain level of strength, things will be slightly better; they can disobey some arrangements.
But the current situation is that everyone must obey the arrangements.
"What are they doing? What's wrong with these nobles... waking us up in the middle of the night? If we get exhausted, who will do the work for them?!"
"Yes, yes, these nobles have completely lost their rational thinking. I advised them to let us go back to rest immediately!"
The guards shouted warnings, "Stop making noise! Keep quiet!"
The residents shrank back, immediately admitting defeat. They might have been joking, but they were genuinely afraid of the guards who actually carried weapons...
Still half-asleep, the villagers followed the guards to various parts of the village, where they began transporting all sorts of materials and building and reinforcing various defensive fortifications.
Latun—as the resident administrator sent by Clam Town—maintained a clear head and knew he had to mobilize all available resources to do something.
Several knights from Inada Village, along with some of their personal guards, were also urgently summoned to the meeting room for a discussion.
"Gentlemen, I won't waste any more words. Now, you need to mobilize all available resources to further reinforce the existing defenses of Inada Village!"
"If there are still loopholes in our defenses, even though we have many fortifications, we need to plug those loopholes. This time, it's a matter of life and death for all of us... Please, everyone."
Latour bowed deeply.
The meeting ended abruptly.
Within just ten minutes, the entire village seemed to come to life, like a machine.
People became the cogs in the village, driving this massive machine through its final preparations.
In the darkness not far from the village, Feuer stood on the hillside, looking down at everything.
If anyone saw his face, they would be speechless with surprise... He was a bizarre goblin shaman!
His hunched body was wrapped in tattered burlap and animal hide, and a necklace made of bone fragments and venomous fangs hung down his chest.
One of its eyes was cloudy and white, while the other burned with a ghostly green light, as if it could pierce through the soul. In its hand, it held a ghostly green staff made of snake bones, the snake's head twisting faintly, making it extremely eerie.
Freud grinned, revealing teeth smeared with black sap. "People are like ants on a hot plate, running around in a panic, unaware that we don't care whether they organize a resistance, because resistance is ultimately futile; it will destroy everything!"
"Feuer! Why are you always acting so strangely..."
A dog-headed man stood beside Feuer.
This was a dog-headed human, much larger than its kind, with a hunched body covered in dark red scales and a row of short, blunt bone spurs protruding from its back, extending from the back of its neck to the base of its tail.
His head retained the outline of a dragon, with broken horns growing diagonally from his brow bone, and a tattered cloak draped over his back, made from a single piece of lizardman skin.
He dragged a serrated machete in his right hand and held a bloodied head in his left, the victim of some unfortunate human...
"Carlos, you barbaric fellow, you've joined forces with goblins, what you lack is precisely our wisdom..." Feuer chuckled wickedly.
The kobold named Carlos was unimpressed. "Kobolds are far more intelligent than you imagine. At least when it comes to setting traps, we are professionals."
"Carlos, prove it to me!"
"Of course, I won't be some coward who just hides in the back!" Carlos grinned, picked up his serrated machete, and walked towards Inada Village...
