Archer's Adventure Manual

Chapter 112: Investigation and Motivation

The farmland of Luoyan Town is mainly distributed around the town. Although most of the food is supplied by the villages within its jurisdiction, Luoyan Town still retains most of its food self-sufficiency.

The fields Chuck was heading to were quite far from their home. Rockfall Town was a very large town overall, not to mention the vast farmland surrounding it.

Loran and his group arrived near the scene of the incident, where they could still see some farmers sowing seeds.

Finita approached the farmers curiously, looking at the seeds they were planting, and asked, "Auntie, what kind of seeds are you planting?"

According to Chuck's parents, Chuck was responding to the lord's call to plant a special plant that was said to be very effective against hordes of monsters.

The farmer's face broke into a proud smile. "These seeds were distributed to us by the lord. As long as we plant them well, we'll be able to cope with any disasters that may befall us! With such a calamity looming, let's all do our part!"

Finita looked curious, and hesitated before asking, "Could you show me that seed?"

The farmer didn't mind and simply placed some of the seeds in Finita's hands.

Finita took the seeds, blinked, and seemed to vaguely recognize them... though not very clearly.

So Finita put on her monocle, sprinkled powder on it, and activated her spiritual vision.

With her spiritual vision unfolding, Finita shifted her perspective to that of the seed, observing the story it contained.

"Is there anything special about these seeds?"

"Nothing special...it's just ordinary wheat seeds with a different appearance."

Finita exited her spiritual vision state, and that was all the information she could obtain. However, she couldn't help but feel a little doubtful. These seeds didn't seem special at all, which was different from what the lord had said.

Finita returned the seeds to the farmer, saying, "Thank you, ma'am, you can go ahead with your work."

"Wow, this girl is really pretty!"

Finita walked away with a slightly flushed face, and then told her teammates what had happened.

"I've examined the seeds in the farmers' hands. There's nothing special about them; they're just ordinary wheat seeds that have been modified using some minor techniques... In reality, they're still wheat seeds."

Finita said, puzzled, "So, I don't quite understand why the Warren nobles would exaggerate the effectiveness of this seed against monsters."

Upon hearing Finita's words, Loran stroked his chin and speculated, "Do you think it's possible that these words were spoken by the Warren nobles to those bad guys hiding among the crowd?"

Lin Wen suddenly realized and agreed, "Yes, yes, I think that's quite likely too. If the lord says that, then naturally someone will want to investigate the origin of this seed, and some clues will definitely be revealed!"

"But... we've found some clues now, but Chuck might have died because of this too," Noah added.

A slight unease settled over everyone. They all suspected a bad outcome: the lord might be trying to use the lives of the commoners to lure out the threat hidden in the town.

The lord did achieve his goal, but the lives of the common people were lost forever...

Everyone understood each other without saying a word. They couldn't change anything anyway, so all they could do was find out who killed Chuck as soon as possible.

Loran and his group then chatted with the farmers for a while, discussing Chuck. The farmers were very resistant to the matter, given the earlier claims about the evil god.

However, they still managed to get some information out of him, such as his get off work hours. Loran led Brian to simulate the route from the fields to the well.

The two locations are quite far apart, with many alleys and dark corners, offering a lot of room for maneuver.

The team decided to split up. Lin Wen and the others went to investigate other clues, while Lorraine, with Brian by her side, went to look for any clues on Chuck's way home.

"Brian, take a good sniff and see if you find anything, especially that awful smell you caught the other day," Lorraine said to Brian.

"Woof woof!" Brian puffed out his chest and began to sniff the ground carefully.

However, after carefully sniffing around, I didn't find anything particularly useful.

Loran carefully searched for suspicious dark spots and walked into a cold alley. It seemed that this place had once been prosperous, but it had gradually become desolate as the number of shops decreased. There were some dilapidated houses all around, and no one had renovated them.

There is also a lot of household garbage piled up here, and the stench is overwhelming, which is also the main reason why no one lives here.

Even Lorraine, as a human, found the smell unbearable, let alone Brian, who felt like he was about to faint.

"Oh my god, I really dislike the taste here... Although it's somewhat similar to delicious food, it makes me feel nauseous," Brian complained.

"It's alright, Brian, don't push yourself. I'll just take a look around here for a bit," Loran said understandingly.

Brian lay down at a certain distance from the garbage heap, patiently waiting for Loran.

Loran looked into the pile of garbage, picked up a stick, poked around inside, and pushed aside the top layer of trash, discovering that something was amiss.

Upon parting the debris again, Loran saw what was inside: rotten meat, now crawling with white maggots.

Loran nearly vomited when he saw this, but he held it in. He continued digging and realized something was amiss, because this piece of meat... it was rather large!

But just then, Brian suddenly yelled, "Watch out!"

A figure emerged from the dilapidated house and rushed directly towards Loran.

...

Meanwhile, Finita and the others changed their investigation focus. After all, simply investigating Chuck's cause of death yielded too few clues, making it difficult to uncover the hidden culprit.

Although Finita possesses the excellent investigative skill of clairvoyance, its strength is limited, preventing her from seeing the whole picture. Finding the murderer using this skill still requires a certain opportunity.

However, they had another direction, because they saw many quests in the Adventurers' Guild. They naturally didn't accept many of those quests, but they wrote down the information about them.

Noah pondered for a moment and said, "Pete's cause of death was assassination, and he was then dumped in an alley. There were obvious signs of being eaten on his body... It's exactly the same as Chuck's death."

"But what's the reason? What's so special about these people? Why are they the target? If killing Chuck might have involved the desire to uncover the secrets of the seed, what was the motive for killing Pete?"

Finita also seemed thoughtful. "Yes, what's the motive? It's really strange... Pete and Chuck are both powerless commoners."

"If we go and learn about the next victim, we'll definitely find the answer," Lin Wen said earnestly.
