Chapter 127 Farewell
Chapter 127 Farewell
The pain of parting was lessened considerably in this atmosphere.
They were knights and warriors, accustomed to the coming and going of their companions; they believed that separation was better than death.
By midnight, Valen was so drunk he was unconscious, slumped over the table and snoring.
Raine helped him up, supported him, and walked him down the streets of the Northern Fortress.
After sending Valen back to the barracks and handing him over to his comrades, Raine walked back to his stone house alone.
He didn't rest immediately, but stood by the window, looking at the distant, rolling mountains.
He awoke here from the body of a spoiled brat, experienced battles and life-or-death situations, and gradually made his way to where he is today.
It can be said that the Northern Fortress witnessed almost his entire journey from apprentice knight to becoming a full-fledged knight.
The next morning, Raine received a summons from the commander.
Alone, he ascended the steps of the Black Tower.
Roderick Stark's room was as simple as ever.
"sit."
Roderick was standing at the table. Hearing footsteps, he didn't turn around, but simply pointed to a chair next to him.
Ryan sat down as instructed.
"Karen has told me everything." Roderick turned around, his grey eyes as deep and sharp as the northern sky. "Going to the capital was the right choice. A knight's honor shouldn't be confined to the north."
He walked behind the table, sat down, took a leather bag from the drawer, and threw it on the table.
"This is your reward," Roderick said. "A total of sixty-seven gold coins and twenty-three silver coins. Take it; the expenses of the capital are far greater than those of the North."
Sixty-seven gold coins.
Renn's pupils contracted slightly; this was definitely a huge sum of money.
And most importantly, the money was in both whole and small amounts, so it's likely that the guild leader personally gave it to Rein as a reward.
He didn't refuse politely, but instead reached out and took the money bag, weighing it in his hand.
"Thank you, Commander."
"This is what you deserve." Roderick waved his hand. "I called you here today not to give you money, but to ask you a question."
He leaned forward slightly, interlaced his fingers on the table, and stared intently at Raine.
"Rain Wilder, are you willing to swear eternal allegiance to the Knights of the North? If you nod, I can now grant you the title of a full knight and give you your own patrol squad."
"Never mind Karen. If you agree, I'll talk to him."
This is an irresistible temptation.
This is almost like achieving instant success.
From a trainee knight, he went directly to become a squad leader with real power.
This means a stable position, continuous merits, and the full support of the powerful Knights of the North.
Renn remained silent.
He looked into Roderick's eyes, but felt unusually calm.
"I appreciate your appreciation, Commander," Raine said slowly, "but I cannot accept it."
A hint of disappointment flickered in Roderick's eyes, but he quickly regained his composure. He seemed to have anticipated this answer, C.
"reason."
"I still have things I need to do," Ryan said without further explanation.
Roderick stared at him for a long time, and finally leaned back in his chair.
"Very well." He nodded. "The eagle ultimately belongs to the sky."
He stood up, walked to the window, and turned his back to Ryan.
"When you reach the capital, remember one thing." His voice came through the wind outside the window: "The wars there don't involve swords, but they are far more bloody than those in the North. Don't easily trust anyone, especially the nobles who seem the kindest."
"I've got it."
"Go." Roderick waved his hand and didn't look back.
Raine stood up, gave a knightly salute to the tall figure, then turned and left the room.
After he left, the door closed again. Roderick remained standing by the window, watching Renn's figure disappear at the top of the stairs.
"A variable, a genius," he murmured to himself. "Karen, just what kind of monster is your disciple?"
The day we set off was a rare sunny day.
Sunlight pierced through the clouds, shining on the snow that had not yet completely melted.
Raine and Ella stood at the gate of the Northern Fortress, leading their horses.
Sir Karen had already mounted his horse and was waiting in silence.
Valen, along with some soldiers who had fought alongside him during the beast tide, came to see him off.
"Take care of yourself!"
"Remember to write to us when you reach the capital!"
The sounds of farewell echoed through the city gate.
Raine mounted his horse, taking one last look at the black fortress and the familiar faces on the walls.
He turned his horse around and didn't look back.
"Let's go," Sir Karen said calmly, spurring his horse on, and the warhorse began to move forward slowly.
Ella followed beside him, glanced back, and waved to the crowd on the city wall.
Three horses, three figures, embarked on a journey to the south.
"Hey, Renn." On the way, Ella came up to her and asked in a low voice, "What are your plans once you get to the capital?"
"Become a knight first," Renn replied, looking straight ahead.
"and then?"
"Then—" Renn's gaze turned to the distant horizon, "go and see just how big this world really is."
The journey away from Winterhold can be described as a world tour that transitions from gray and white to colorful.
During the first week, although spring had arrived in the North, they were still traversing the harsh embrace of the cold.
All around were barren plains and white snow, and in the distance, without exception, were vast mountain ranges. Occasionally, one could see the dark green of coniferous forests by the roadside.
The wind blowing from the north was still biting, constantly brushing against Renn's cheeks.
Their daily lives are as monotonous as the environment they live in.
At dawn, before the light has completely pierced the darkness, Sir Karen would rise on time.
He never woke them up, but silently rekindled the remaining campfire from the previous night and placed a piece of dried meat on it. When the smoke rose, Raine and Ella would usually wake up from the noise.
Ryan is usually the second to wake up.
He would first meditate on breathing techniques for twenty minutes, feeling the life energy flowing through his body, slowly repairing the muscle fatigue from the previous day's cycling.
Ella was always the last one. She would be a little grumpy when she woke up, grumbling about the cold weather and the jerky that never got hot, but her hands moved incredibly quickly as she packed her bags.
The daytime schedule is monotonous.
The horses' hooves pounded on the half-melted snow, making a series of sounds.
Perhaps because of the cold weather, Sir Karen has spoken very little these past few days, but he teaches through his actions.
He would suddenly rein in his horse, point to a series of inconspicuous footprints on the snow in the distance, and ask Ella to identify what kind of wild animal left them, which direction they were traveling, and how long ago they were.
In the wilderness, a knight's sword is not the only weapon.
Renn was happy to accept this.
