Yun Yi was not surprised.
A month later, Adou came again.
This time, he walked with a limp, but his face was beaming with a smile as bright and carefree as a flower.
"Big bird, I'm back!"
He waved from afar, then sat down on the ground below the stone platform and began to pour out his grievances.
"My dad almost broke my legs."
"My mother also scolded me, saying that I shouldn't have taken my little sister out, what if she had fallen?"
"But I held her very firmly, and she didn't cry!"
"That adult is so unreasonable..."
He rambled on and on for a long time, and Yun Yi just listened.
After he finished speaking, A-Dou suddenly remembered something happy, and his eyes lit up:
"My sister can smile now!"
"She has dimples!"
"Smile only at me!"
"And my younger sister also has a name, Chen Ya. My mother said it was given to her by a fortune teller, and there's even a little poem associated with it."
"Two sprouts emerge from the soil, my name is Chen Dou, yours is Ya. Bean sprouts are a family, brother leading his sister."
"This is a poem that I asked that fortune teller for seven whole days before I finally got it."
Looking at the other person's silly grin, Yun Yi knew without a doubt that this was an extreme case of a sister-obsessed person.
As for that thing, he begged for seven days. Judging from the little brat's appearance, he probably bothered the fortune teller for a full seven days before the fortune teller finally gave him a poem.
When Adou heard him make a sound, he got even more excited and recounted his experiences over the past month from beginning to end, even mentioning how many eggs the old hen had laid.
Of course, the most important thing is to show off that he has a younger sister.
Every time he talks about his younger sister, A-Dou's smile never stops.
The only thing that caught Yunyi's attention was that Adou said his younger sister was born on January 1st—the same day he came into this world.
A few months later, when Adou secretly brought his younger sister out again, Yunyi glanced at her with the Eye of Truth.
After confirming that he was not a reincarnator, he stopped worrying about it.
The only change was that this time, A-Dou didn't reappear for a full three months.
The first thing he did upon meeting her was to complain, focusing on how his parents said his younger sister couldn't be shown to anyone easily, and that they would break his legs if he took her out again.
Adou was naturally indignant—why keep such a cute little sister at home all day instead of taking her out to make others envious?
As a result, I got another mixed doubles beating and had to stay quiet for two months.
The days flowed by slowly amidst Adou's chattering boasts about her younger sister and Yunyi's long silences.
Spring goes and autumn comes, autumn goes and winter comes.
In the blink of an eye, it has been six years since Yun Yi came to this world.
Adou has grown from a tiny little boy who was not even as tall as Yunyi's wings to a twelve-year-old boy.
Six years is but a blink of an eye for Yun Yi.
He spent most of his time contemplating the laws, and when he occasionally opened his eyes, he would see Adou sitting on the rock below, a blade of grass dangling from his mouth, excitedly approaching him.
Adou has grown quite a bit taller, his face has matured, but his eyes are still as bright and dark as ever.
She still complained that her parents were keeping a close eye on her younger sister—she's six years old and so cute, why can't they take her out to play?
Yun Yi ignored him, but inwardly admired the little brat: after being beaten for several years, he hadn't learned his lesson and still wanted to bring his sister out.
It was already dark when Adou ran out of the valley.
Yun Yi watched his figure disappear into the woods without saying a word, and continued to comprehend the laws of space and time.
This time, however, she didn't close her eyes.
……
Chenjia Village, at dusk.
The sky was half dark, and the western clouds burned a dark red, as if someone had splashed blood onto the sky.
Chen Dachuan was chopping firewood in the yard.
Li Guifang squatted by the door picking vegetables, muttering to herself, "Where has that brat Adou gone again? I haven't seen him all afternoon."
The courtyard was very quiet, with only the dull thud of an axe chopping into wood and wisps of smoke rising from the stove.
Then, that silence shattered.
A muffled, chaotic sound of horses' hooves came from the direction of the village entrance, mixed with the clanging of armor, like muffled thunder rolling across the ground before a storm. The dogs of Chenjia Village began to bark wildly.
Chen Dachuan put down the axe and looked up outside.
A dozen or so armored soldiers with swords charged into the village on horseback. The leader had a fierce face and a hideous scar under his right eye. The scabbard at his waist was studded with copper nails, which gleamed in the last rays of the setting sun.
Without hesitation, they headed straight for the Chen family's courtyard.
The courtyard gate was kicked open.
"Chen Dachuan!"
Scarface dismounted, his sword already drawn, the sound as rough as sandpaper grinding iron.
"You have some nerve! How dare you harbor extraterrestrial demons!"
Chen Dachuan was stunned.
The vegetables in Li Guifang's hand fell to the ground.
"Sir, what are you saying? What extraterrestrial demons? Our family has never had any..."
"No?"
Scarface sneered and stepped into the house.
Several soldiers filed in and roughly kicked over the tables, chairs and benches in the main room.
"The higher-ups have already given orders that all children born on January 1st, 2134 of the Tianyuan Calendar are reincarnations of extraterrestrial demons and must be handed over to the government for execution! Someone from your Chenjia Village has informed you that your family is hiding one."
"What, still trying to deny it?"
Chen Dachuan's face gradually turned pale.
January 1st, 2134 in the Tianyuan calendar—that was Chen Ya's birthday.
He and Li Guifang exchanged a glance, a hint of panic flashing in their eyes, which they quickly suppressed.
"Sir, we really don't have any." Chen Dachuan stepped forward, trying to keep his voice from trembling. "I only have a son named Chen Dou, who is twelve years old. We don't have any children born on the day you mentioned."
"Yes, yes, sir, they really don't have any." Aunt Liu from next door mustered her courage and came over, her face full of smiles but her voice trembling. "We've all watched Chen Dou grow up, there's no extraterrestrial demon at all."
"Sir, are you sure you're not mistaken?" Several more villagers gathered around, chiming in to help, "Chen Dachuan's family only has one son; they have no other children."
"There are no children born on January 1st in our village. There must be a mistake."
Scarface didn't speak, but gave them a cold glance.
The corners of his mouth slowly turned up, his expression like that of a wolf listening to a flock of sheep say they had no lambs.
"You say there's no, so there isn't?" he scoffed. "Search them!"
The officers and soldiers rushed into the courtyard and began ransacking the place.
Chen Dachuan stood in front of him, but a soldier slammed his shoulder hard with the hilt of his sword, causing him to stagger and crash into the door frame, drawing blood from his forehead.
Li Guifang screamed and lunged forward, only to be pushed to the ground by another soldier.
The main room, kitchen, and woodshed were all turned upside down.
The rice bin was smashed, the bedding was torn to shreds, and pots and pans were broken all over the floor.
Chen Dachuan struggled to get up, but the scarred man stepped on his chest, the blade pointing at his throat.
"You'd better tell me yourself where you hid the doll."
Chen Dachuan gritted his teeth, blood seeping from between his lips, and didn't say a word.
Li Guifang kept her mouth tightly shut, but her eyes involuntarily glanced towards the dry well in the corner of the courtyard.
She quickly looked away.
Another person in the crowd also looked away.
The man pushed forward, a fawning smile plastered on his face, his voice shrill and urgent, like a mouse whose tail had been stepped on.
"Sir! Sir! This humble citizen understands!"
Everyone turned to look at the source of the sound.
It was Chen Ergou from the village, a lazy man in his thirties who idled away his time. He had been publicly reprimanded by Chen Dachuan several times for petty theft.
He squeezed through the crowd, bowed and scraped to the scarred man, and pointed to the dry well in the corner of the yard, which was half covered by withered grass.
"Sir, their child is hiding in the well! I saw it with my own eyes; there's a small hole at the bottom of the well, and the child is hiding inside!"
"Chen Ergou, how dare you frame me!" Chen Dachuan's eyes were bloodshot as he struggled desperately to get up.
Scarface kicked him in the face, knocking him to the ground.
"Let's go take a look."
Two soldiers walked to the dry well and moved away the withered grass and stone slabs around the well opening.
One of the peepholes glanced down, then pulled back in: "Boss, there's something down there."
Scarface gave a knowing smile.
"Bring it up."
The soldier climbed down the rope into the well. Not long after, a child's terrified cries came from the wellhead.
Chen Ya was brought up.
The six-year-old girl was thin and small, her face was covered in dust, her big eyes were filled with tears, her mouth was wide open, and she was crying her heart out.
She glanced at Chen Dachuan and Li Guifang lying on the ground, and cried even harder. She reached out her hands to rush towards them, but the soldiers lifted her up in mid-air like a chick.
"Mother! Father! I'm scared! I'm so scared!"
Li Guifang completely broke down.
She didn't know where the strength came from, but she got up from the ground and rushed over, trying to snatch Chen Ya back from the soldiers.
Then, a flash of light appeared.
