Days pass by, like a stream, neither hurried nor slow.

Xiao Bai and Jiang Xiaochuan settled down in Qilidong, as if they really intended to stay for a long time. Xiao Bai bought pots and pans, and seeds, and planted vegetables in a small open space behind the building. Miao Ren taught her, and she learned how to water, fertilize, and weed. The seedlings were tender and green, and grew taller day by day.

She also learned to make Miao people's clothes. She bought cloth and needles and thread, and sat under the window to sew. The stitches were rough and crooked, but she didn't mind. She took it apart and sewed it again. When she finished, she showed it to Jiang Xiaochuan. Jiang Xiaochuan looked at the thing that could barely be called a piece of clothing and remained silent.

Xiao Bai wasn't annoyed and smiled, "It's the first time, you'll be better next time."

She sewed and unsewed, and sewed and unsewed again. Half a month later, she sewed a short jacket, indigo blue, embroidered with simple patterns, which looked quite decent. She handed it to Jiang Xiaochuan: "Try it."

Jiang Xiaochuan took it, put it on, and found that it was the perfect size, the fabric was soft, and it was comfortable to wear.

Xiao Bai circled around him, looking him over from left to right, and nodded: "Beautiful."

Jiang Xiaochuan looked down at his jacket. It was indigo blue, made of coarse cloth, but the stitches were dense. He raised his hand and touched the embroidery on the lapel. It was rough, but he could tell that it was a cloud pattern.

"Thanks," he said.

Xiao Bai smiled, her eyes crinkling: "Just a thank you?"

Jiang Xiaochuan looked at her: "Then what do you want?"

Xiaobai leaned closer, looked up at him, and said, "Give me a kiss."

Jiang Xiaochuan took a step back, his ears turning red: "Stop fooling around."

"I'll make a scene." Little White persisted and moved closer.

"I had stitches for half a month, and my hands were all pricked. Look." She held out her hand, and there were several tiny needle marks on her fingertips, which had already scabbed over.

Jiang Xiaochuan looked at her fingertips, remained silent for a moment, then suddenly grabbed her wrist, lowered his head, and gently touched her fingertips.

Soon, it brushed past like a feather.

Xiao Bai froze, feeling the warm, soft touch on her fingertips. She looked at Jiang Xiaochuan, who turned his face away, his ears burning red.

She laughed, stopped teasing him, and simply squeezed his hand in return, whispering, "Silly boy."

Jiang Xiaochuan withdrew his hand, turned around and walked out: "I'm going for a walk by the stream."

"Wait," Xiaobai called out to him, picking up the short jacket. "Wear this and let them see."

Jiang Xiaochuan paused for a moment, then took the clothes, put them on, and went downstairs.

Xiao Bai stood by the window, watching him walk out of the building, walk to the stream, squat down, and look at the water. The indigo short jacket fit him well, making his broad shoulders and slender waist stand out.

A Miao person passed by and greeted him. He nodded in response. The Miao person pointed at his clothes and said something, probably a compliment. He shook his head and said something, probably "She made it."

Xiao Bai looked on, a smile curving his lips, his eyes shining.

At night, the two sat by the stream. The moonlight was beautiful, round and hanging in the sky, its clear light shining down, making the stream shimmer like it was covered with shattered silver.

Xiao Bai hummed a song, a soft tune, a Miao folk song that she had learned. As she hummed, she stopped and said, "That day you were drunk and said a lot of things."

Jiang Xiaochuan looked at her.

"You said I'm pretty, you said I have a good figure, you said I'm a good person," Xiaobai counted, a smile in her eyes. "You even told me not to leave."

Jiang Xiaochuan stopped talking, looked down at his toes.

"Is it the truth?" Xiaobai asked softly.

Jiang Xiaochuan remained silent. The wind blew, the stream gurgled, and frogs croaked in the distance.

A long time passed, so long that Xiaobai thought he wouldn't answer, before he finally spoke, his voice low but clear:

"Yes."

Xiao Bai looked at him. In the moonlight, his profile was soft, his eyelashes drooped, casting a faint shadow under his eyes. His hands were on his knees, his fingers slightly curled.

"I know," Xiaobai said, her voice as gentle as water.

Jiang Xiaochuan looked up at her.

Xiao Bai smiled, her eyes reflecting the moonlight, fragmented and bright.

"Your eyes were bright when you spoke; it didn't sound like you were talking nonsense." She paused. "Even if it was, it was the truth."

Jiang Xiaochuan's Adam's apple bobbed, as if he wanted to say something, but he didn't.

Little White didn't wait for him; she just looked up at the moon.

The moon was round and bright, illuminating everything around it.

She watched for a while and said softly, "When I was at the Xuanhuo Altar, I often thought about what I would do if I could go out. I thought of many things: I would sunbathe, look at flowers, drink wine, wear beautiful clothes, and eat lots of delicious food."

She turned to look at Jiang Xiaochuan: "Now, I've accomplished everything, and even some things I never thought of."

"For example?" Jiang Xiaochuan asked.

"For example," Xiaobai said with a smile, "I sew clothes for you, cook for you, watch you eat the food I cook, and wear the clothes I sew."

She paused, her voice becoming even softer and gentler, "For example, sitting here with you, watching the moon."

Jiang Xiaochuan looked at her. In the moonlight, her face was white, her eyes were bright, and the corners of her mouth were curved gently... beautiful... very beautiful. In the place in his heart, the Bloodthirsty Bead was quiet and still, but he felt that it was a little warm and a little soft.

He turned his face away, not daring to look at Xiaobai. He looked at the stream and said, "What's so beautiful about the moon?"

"It's beautiful," said Xiaobai, looking at the stream. "There are two moons reflected in the water, one in the sky and one in the water."

Jiang Xiaochuan looked at the moon reflected in the water, shimmering and fragmented, yet still round.

Which one is real?

Xiao Bai smiled and said, "It's all real, and it's all not real. The moon in the sky is real, but it's too high and too cold to touch. The moon in the water is fake; it would shatter if you touched it. But it's right here in my hand, warm and cool."

As she spoke, she picked up a pebble and threw it into the stream. The moon's reflection shattered into countless golden flakes, which then slowly gathered back together.

Xiao Bai said softly, "Jiang Xiaochuan, which one do you want? The one in the sky that's real but out of reach, or the one in the water that's fake but you can hold in your hands?"

Jiang Xiaochuan didn't answer. After a long while, he slowly asked, "And you?"

Xiao Bai rested her head on his shoulder, her voice still melodious: "I want the one in the water. If it breaks, I'll wait for it to come back together. If it doesn't... I'll look at the one in the sky. Anyway, the moon will always rise, and I'll always be waiting."

Jiang Xiaochuan gazed at the shimmering moon's reflection in the water and said in a deep voice, "What if the moon in the water can never reunite?"

Xiaobai smiled and said, "Then let's build another lake."

"What if the moon never rises and the sky never brightens?"

"Then let's wait until dawn."

What if dawn never breaks again?

Xiao Bai was silent for a moment, then said softly, "Then I'll go to the sky and pluck the moon down from the sky."

Jiang Xiaochuan turned to look at her; in the moonlight, her eyes were clear and resolute.

"I'm serious," said Xiaobai, "Three hundred years of magma didn't burn me, three hundred years of chains didn't bind me, three hundred years of loneliness didn't drive me mad. If I want something, if heaven doesn't give it to me, I'll steal it; if earth doesn't give it to me, I'll dig it; if you don't give it to me..."

She paused, then smiled gently, "I'll wait for you to give it to me."

She squeezed his hand: "But Jiang Xiaochuan, I know you will give it, because you are the kind of person... who would rather break yourself than let others suffer because of you."

Jiang Xiaochuan's Adam's apple bobbed, unsure of what to say: "I might keep you waiting a long time."

"I have plenty of time," Xiaobai said. "Three years, thirty years, three hundred years... I can wait, as long as I'm still here when you turn around."

Neither of them spoke, they sat quietly. The wind blew by, carrying the smell of distant cooking smoke and the dampness of the stream. Frogs croaked one after another, and insects chirped and squeaked, creating a lively scene.

Xiao Bai moved closer to Jiang Xiaochuan, their shoulders touching, and Jiang Xiaochuan didn't move away.

She leaned against him and whispered, "Jiang Xiaochuan."

"Um."

"If only things could stay like this forever."

Jiang Xiaochuan didn't answer. He stared at the shimmering moon in the water for a long time before finally whispering:

"Um."
