One morning not long after.

Lu Xueqi opened her eyes, turned her head to the side, and saw that the person in her arms was sleeping soundly, breathing evenly and deeply, with her forehead resting against the crook of her neck, and one hand unconsciously resting on her waist, clutching the corner of her undergarment.

She looked at him for a while, her gaze gentle without her even realizing it. Then, very slowly, little by little, she pulled her arm out from under his neck and gently removed his hand from her waist. Her movements were extremely light, as if she didn't want to disturb his peaceful sleep.

He must have been tired last night… Her face flushed slightly, and she didn’t think any further, just pursed her lips.

She got up, her bare feet touching the cool floor, picked up the undergarment she had casually draped over the back of the chair the night before, put it on, tied the belt, walked to the bedside, and leaned down to look at him.

He wasn't a very good sleeping man, but now he probably felt the emptiness in his arms. His brows furrowed unconsciously, and his nose twitched as if he could smell her scent. Then his face slowly relaxed, and he unconsciously rubbed his face against the pillow where she had slept, burying it deeper.

A faint smile appeared in Lu Xueqi's eyes. She bent down, leaned closer, held her breath, and quickly touched the slightly flushed, somewhat silly cheek of the girl who was sleeping.

Dragonflies skimming the water.

Then he immediately straightened up, like a thief, curled his fingertips, turned around and quickly left the bedroom, gently closing the door behind him.

The fire in the stove ignited, illuminating her expressionless yet exceptionally gentle face as she rinsed the rice, added water, and covered it with the wooden lid.

Then I went to process the plump pheasant that I had hunted from the back of Dazhu Peak yesterday. I plucked its feathers, cleaned it, chopped it into pieces, blanched it, put it in another casserole, added a few slices of old ginger and a few dried dates that I bought from Heyang City, and simmered it slowly over a low flame.

The firewood crackled softly, and fragrant steam gradually rose from the soup pot. She watched the dancing flames quietly, listening to the complete silence from the bedroom inside. Her heart was full and at peace.

After serving the two little darlings their washing and dressing, and watching them sit obediently at the table drinking porridge and eating shredded chicken and vegetarian buns, Xiao Bai yawned and swayed out. Her hair was messy from sleeping, and she was only wearing an outer robe, revealing a small patch of her snow-white shoulders and neck, seemingly unafraid of the cold.

She glanced at the casserole dish, her eyes lighting up: "Chicken soup?"

"Mm." Lu Xueqi nodded, served her a bowl of porridge, and put a steamed bun on her plate. "While it's hot."

Xiao Bai sat down, picked up a steamed bun, took a bite, and mumbled, "Yun Zhou Yue Yao, after you finish eating, your godmother will take you to Da Zhu Peak to play and find your Aunt Ling'er. She said yesterday that she got some new gadgets for you."

The two children cheered and sped up their porridge eating.

After seeing the adult and two children out of the bamboo house, the courtyard quieted down again. Lu Xueqi cleaned up the dishes, washed her hands, and stood by the stove for a while until the smell of cooking smoke on her clothes dissipated before turning back to her room.

She gently pushed open the door. He was still asleep, his posture barely changed, except that he was almost lying face down on the side where she was sleeping, his face buried in her pillow.

She walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed, reaching out to smooth his disheveled hair. He must have smelled her familiar scent, because he groggily hummed, closed his eyes, and, following the source of warmth, crawled over on all fours. He tilted his head and rested against her leg, motionless.

Lu Xueqi chuckled and let him lean against her. She sat there for a while, listening to his steady breathing and watching the sky outside the window gradually brighten. The bamboo shadows swayed gently on the ground through the window frame.

He woke up to a gentle yet continuous caress, something soft, gently and patiently stroking his hair.

He hummed comfortably, his eyelids fluttered, and he opened his eyes a crack. The morning light was a little dazzling, and he squinted. What came into view was plain white clothing and long, dark hair. He blinked, and his hazy consciousness slowly returned. It was Lu Xueqi.

He yawned deeply, a few tears welling up in his eyes. He looked up at the person sitting by the bed. Lu Xueqi was also looking down at him. Their eyes met, and the tenderness in her eyes had not yet fully disappeared. Like snow melting in spring, clear and cold, yet warm.

"Awake?" Her voice was slightly hoarse from the morning, lower and more pleasant than usual.

"Mmm..." He rubbed against her leg again, feeling lazy and unwilling to move. He reached out and wrapped his arms around her waist, buried his face in hers, and took a deep breath. All he could smell was her scent, which made him feel at ease.

Lu Xueqi let him hold her, her hand falling from his hair to his back, patting him gently, like coaxing a child.

Are you hungry?

His stomach growled at just the right moment. He nodded, his head buried in her waist, and a muffled voice came out: "A little."

Lu Xueqi gently broke free from him, got up and went to the outer room. She quickly brought in hot water and salt to help him wash up. He sat on the edge of the bed, closed his eyes and tilted his head back, letting her wipe his face with a warm towel. Then he messed around with his teeth a few times. She watched from the side, and after he rinsed his mouth, she handed him a clean towel.

After he finished tidying up, he shuffled to the table in the outer room and sat down. A steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup was already placed in front of him. The chicken soup was clear, the noodles were thin and white, a few green bok choy hearts were on top, and there was a golden-brown fried egg. The edges of the egg white were slightly crispy, and the yolk was runny. When you poked it with chopsticks, the thick egg liquid flowed out and mixed into the soup. The aroma went straight into his nose.

His eyes lit up. He picked up his chopsticks, blew on them, and began to eat heartily. The noodles were smooth, the chicken soup was delicious, the bok choy was sweet, and the poached egg was cooked perfectly. He ate until beads of sweat appeared on his nose, and he squinted his eyes in satisfaction.

Lu Xueqi sat opposite him, elbows propped on the table, chin resting on her hand, quietly watching him eat. Only after he had almost finished did she softly ask, "Is it good?"

"Mmm! Delicious!" Without looking up, he slurped down the last mouthful of soup, put down the bowl, breathed a satisfied sigh, and wiped his mouth with his sleeve.

He slowly raised his head and looked at Lu Xueqi.

She maintained that posture, but the tenderness in her eyes had faded, replaced by a familiar light, tinged with a hint of mockery and deeper meaning. The corners of her lips seemed to curve upwards in a very subtle arc.

"Is it good?" She repeated herself, enunciating each word clearly, her voice low and soft, like a feather brushing against your eardrum.

Jiang Xiaochuan's face flushed red from the base of his neck to the tips of his ears, his blood rushing to his head and making his brain buzz.

"You...you..." He pointed at her, his fingers trembling slightly, and he could barely speak.

Looking at his flushed face and embarrassed appearance, Lu Xueqi finally smiled, as if she was very satisfied with his reaction.

She stood up, walked around the table, and went to his side. She leaned close to his ear, her warm breath brushing against his already burning earlobe. Her voice was even lower, just a whisper, yet it penetrated his ear with crystal clarity:

"If it's delicious, eat more. I'll make you more tonight."

boom--!

Jiang Xiaochuan felt like his head was about to burst into flames.
