American comic book: Absolute Spider-Man

Chapter 40 Green Goblin Serum

Inside the underground laboratory of the Osborne Building, a human experiment is underway.

Using complete research data on the Erskine Serum obtained from military sources, the Osborn Group reverse engineered and optimized a more violent and unstable enhancement agent—the Green Goblin Serum.

No one knows that this drug, derived from Erkin's serum, inherits the most secretive rule of the original: amplifying individual nature, making the good better and the bad worse, and even having a far greater impact on personality than the original Erkin's serum.

The only ones who knew about the secret rule of the original serum were Dr. Erskine, who died decades ago, and Captain America himself, who was told the truth.

This characteristic was obscured by the experimental data, and all the researchers involved in the experiment were completely unaware of it.

The subject convulsed violently immediately after receiving the injection.

The serum in the blood vessels was like boiling molten iron, tearing and reshaping layer by layer from the internal organs to the bones, and every nerve was screaming.

He gripped the edge of the experimental table tightly, his veins bulging, and a non-human howl erupted from his throat. He was in so much pain that his consciousness was shattering, but the drugs forcibly kept him on the verge of consciousness.

The physiological values on the monitor screen skyrocketed: muscle strength, reaction speed, metabolism, and brain activity all exceeded human limits.

Several tens of minutes later, the roaring gradually subsided.

The renovation is now completely complete.

The subject slumped on the stage, drenched in sweat, breathing weakly, with timid eyes and hesitant movements. He didn't even dare to look up at the researchers around him, showing no signs of the expected rage or loss of control.

All physiological indicators met expectations, and the animal's behavior was docile and stable. The researchers on site breathed a sigh of relief, their faces showing expressions of satisfaction.

No one questioned this "smoothness," and no one delved into the reasons for the subjects' unusual timidity—they were unaware that Norman Osborn had deliberately arranged long-term psychological intervention before the experiment began.

Unlike any secret scheme, the initial intention of this intervention was pure and simple: to minimize the risks of the experiment and prevent the subjects from becoming violent or out of control due to the sudden increase in power after the serum modification.

This was certainly not because Norman was overly suspicious or worried unnecessarily.

The military's attempts to research super soldiers have already left behind bloody lessons—General Ross's Rebirth Project replication project is a living example.

They attempted to replicate the Erskine serum using gamma rays, but accidentally turned Bruce Banner into an out-of-control Hulk, causing irreparable damage.

It is said that General Ross's daughter was kidnapped by Hulk, a story that remains a major joke in the industry to this day.

Norman stood in the observation room, looking at the docile subject on the monitor screen, his brow slightly relaxed.

He assumed that the psychological intervention had achieved the expected safety effect, without realizing that this cowardice was precisely the result of the Green Goblin serum amplifying his true nature after the intervention.

Everyone assumed that the experiment was going smoothly, that the Green Devil serum was safe and stable, and that the entire project was about to achieve a new breakthrough.

As the subjects cooperated with the researchers in a series of tests, Norman's ambition and desire gradually grew as he watched their exaggerated performances and astonishing data.

Peter knew nothing of all this.

It wasn't because Peter didn't care about Norman and the potential Green Goblin; on the contrary, his infiltration and surveillance of the Osborn Group had already reached a level far exceeding that of commercial espionage.

Emails, R&D logs, equipment scheduling, and staff attendance—almost all network nodes were under his and Jarvis's covert control, and even the slightest anomaly could not escape the big data retrieval of artificial intelligence.

Even so, he still failed to realize that the entire Green Goblin Serum project had already begun and was now completely completed.

Norman Osborn, as one of America's top capitalists and an important member of the military-industrial complex, fought his way up from the bottom to the top of the social pyramid. His ruthlessness and caution were beyond what was expected.

The core project is not connected to any external network, is physically isolated, has an independent server room, and is manually registered, thus eliminating the possibility of being hacked at the source.

All traces of Osborne Group’s procurement, consumables, and equipment allocation related to serum experiments were dismantled and scattered by Norman, deeply buried in the redundant budgets of the military’s targeted procurement, the supporting consumables secretly developed by the Ministry of Defense, and the massive flow of biological protection, simulated combat agents, and human performance enhancement auxiliary equipment that the group has provided to the military-industrial complex over the years.

Seemingly ordinary orders are broken down into more than a dozen shell projects, interstate subsidiaries, and third-party outsourcing companies, mixed in with tens of thousands of compliant military procurement items every year, forming a huge and harmless data fog.

Even Jarvis's big data retrieval and anomaly detection algorithms can only classify such hidden expenditures, which are deeply embedded in the national-level military supply chain, as normal defense spending. They are completely unable to find any trace of secret human experimentation from the massive amount of legal records.

Peter could penetrate Osborn's layers of security, but he had no way of knowing about this top-secret plan that even the existence of itself was being erased.

Peter is currently troubled by Connors' situation.

On the television screen, Connors, disguised as a humanoid lizard, kills several military personnel and then pulls a heavily reinforced metal box from an armored vehicle.

He then carried the item and sped along the highway toward the Long Island Strait. Before his pursuers could catch up, he leaped into the water, his massive figure quickly disappearing into the surging waves without a trace.

Seawater washes away scents, ocean currents disrupt tracks, and any tracking equipment is rendered useless in this open water; all exposed traces will be completely erased.

Peter estimates that Connors will eventually follow the underwater currents and dive into the old sewer system that connects Queens and Manhattan.

The place was dark, damp, and well-connected, which suited the lizard's natural habitat and allowed it to completely avoid satellite and ground searches, making it his ideal hiding place.

Finding Connors using technology is nearly impossible, so Peter decides to use magical means to find him.

He put on the sling ring and began casting a spell, opening a portal sparking with fire.

Peter looked at the portal, then rubbed his eyes in disbelief.

His original destination was the Sanctuary in New York, and finding someone was something that any fortune teller could easily do.

But now, the scene on the other side of the portal is not the Sanctuary, but the stronghold where he is currently staying.

Two meters away, Ned and Peter stared at each other through the portal.

Peter, refusing to believe it, opened the portal again.

But this time, the other side of the portal was still Ned's chubby face.

"Ned, you open the door. Target: New York Holy See," Peter said angrily.

"Okay, sure." Ned obediently did as he was told and opened the portal.

Peter looked at Ned's chubby face on the other side of the portal and realized who was behind it.

Who else could it be but the Ancient One?

"Damn it! What do you think you're doing, you Supreme Deadbeat?!"
