American comic book: Absolute Spider-Man
Chapter 50 Breaking Free
Does fate possess a gravitational pull that causes everything to move along a predetermined trajectory?
Peter had no idea about this.
But in this world, no, not just in this world, many things are predetermined.
For example, the deaths of Tony's parents, the deaths of most Spider-Man characters' Uncle Ben, and the Wayne family in DC Comics who went in with six legs and came out with two.
Of course, this also includes Peter and Gwen. In most cases, Gwen is Peter's sacrifice, and in a few cases, Peter is Spider-Woman Gwen's sacrifice.
The methods of death were vastly different, but the endings were the same.
However, there is always a way to break free from the pull of fate in this world.
If Peter hadn't gained that memory and hadn't experienced cognitive dissonance, he would probably have become Spider-Man, and Gwen would have been the one falling.
Fortunately, this layer of gravity has been broken.
If Peter hadn't learned magic, what awaited him now would have been a 70-meter plunge into the Hudson River, the water becoming as hard as concrete from the high-speed impact, his bones shattering, and his internal organs ruptured.
Either Gwen's spider silk wraps around his ankle at the last moment—and then, like in the comics, the impact of the sudden stop breaks his cervical spine.
Although the Ancient One is indebted, likes to personally attack her creditors, sometimes speaks in half-finished sentences, and may even treat Peter as a pawn on her chessboard, she at least genuinely teaches magic.
With magic, Peter can break free from the pull of fate.
In the moment of falling, Peter's mind was racing, and his hands were still busy.
The spider silk was getting closer and closer, and Peter threw his wool coat at it.
The coat intercepted the spider silk in mid-air, and golden sparks exploded beneath him.
The other side of the portal wasn't the river, but the sky—the sky behind him, above the bridge, stretching vertically upwards.
Peter fell into the portal.
In that instant, his body changed from falling downwards to flying upwards.
Gravity was still there, but its direction had changed—the upward initial velocity was counteracting the downward force of gravity. His speed was rapidly decreasing, like a stone thrown high into the air, reaching its highest point, pausing for less than half a second, and then beginning to fall again.
Another portal opened, catching Peter as he fell, and Peter landed on the bridge.
I landed on my back on the asphalt bridge, and it stung terribly.
But he was alive, his ribs were not broken, his cervical spine was not broken, and his internal organs were not ruptured. He was just in pain, his ears were ringing, and he had a bloody taste in his mouth.
The shockwave from the pumpkin bomb damaged the capillaries in his lungs, causing him to have a metallic taste in his mouth and cough up small amounts of blood.
I feel a slight tightness or pressure when I breathe, like a book is pressing on my chest.
The explosion damaged my eardrum at close range. It didn't perforate, but my ears kept ringing for a long time, and I could hear sounds as if they were coming through a layer of cotton.
It's a minor injury; it'll heal in a few days. There's no need to go to the hospital.
But Peter was furious because he had almost died this time.
Super soldiers like Green Goblin are different from Extremis; they can't even react to their attacks.
Throwing the pumpkin bomb at his feet from dozens of meters away, Peter only had a fraction of a second to react.
If he hadn't reacted quickly and dodged behind the car, the shockwave and shrapnel from that explosion alone would have killed him.
How could a person be so evil? Don't you think so, Green Goblin?
Sigh, where's the Green Goblin?
Peter looked at the bridge surface where the Green Goblin had been bound by spider silk. All that remained were a clump of torn spider silk, a few pieces of broken asphalt, and several shallow potholes that had been forcibly dug out of the road surface.
Gwen flew up from under the bridge, just about to check on Peter's injuries, when she saw Peter pointing to the place where the Green Goblin had run away.
"Never mind me, go find the Green Goblin first."
Upon hearing this, Gwen immediately instructed the AI within her armor to search the bridge's surveillance footage and locate Green Goblin, who had already run off the bridge.
Gwen's thrusters were fully engaged, and she flew at high speed close to the surface of the Hudson River.
On the armor's HUD, Green Goblin's heat source signal was moving rapidly along the riverbank in New Jersey.
His skateboard was destroyed, but the Green Goblin serum gave him superhuman physical abilities—he could run and jump between bushes and rocks at a speed no slower than a car.
Gwen lowered its altitude, lifted off the river, and crossed the rocky banks.
Hearing the shriek of the thrusters, Green Goblin turned around and saw his white, black, and pink armor leaving a golden trail in the night sky, with four mechanical spider legs spreading out behind him.
He quickened his pace, rushing towards a grove of trees above the riverbank. The trees could obscure his view, interfere with tracking, and—
Gwen did not land. She hovered in the air, her hands raised, her four mechanical spider legs pointing downwards simultaneously.
It wasn't just one spider web, it was more than a dozen.
From her wrists, from the tips of her spider legs, from the hidden launch ports on the shoulders of her armor—white spider silk wove into a dense web in the night sky, covering an area dozens of meters in front of Norman.
Tree trunks were entangled in spider silk, shrubs were covered in spider silk, and the ground was covered with spider silk, forming a silvery-white swamp.
Norman's steps became entangled, his body leaned forward, and he fell into the spider web.
Gwen continued to shoot silk, wrapping the Green Goblin in a cocoon. She grabbed the cocoon and flew back to the bridge from the New Jersey riverbank.
……
The lights in the Avengers Tower laboratory lounge area were turned to a warm yellow.
The sofa was moved from its original position against the wall to the floor-to-ceiling window, facing the Manhattan skyline at night. Three wine glasses sat on the coffee table.
Stark Estate wasn't finished yet, and Tony was busy developing a new generation of Extremis virus, so he decided to live in Avengers Tower with Pepper and Maya.
Tony sat in the middle of the sofa, with two buttons undone at the collar of his shirt and the sleeves rolled up to his forearms.
Pepper leaned against his right, her legs curled up on the sofa, her head resting on his shoulder.
Her hand rested on his chest, where he had already removed the reactor, her fingertips unconsciously tracing circles on his skin.
Maya sat to his left, not leaning against him, but with her legs resting on Tony's knees.
Tony's hand was on Pepper's side, his thumb gently caressing her through the thin fabric of her loungewear. His other hand hung at his side, his fingertips resting on Maya's knee.
Tony moved his hand from Maya's knee to her waist. She put down her teacup, took Tony's hand from her waist, and placed it on her thigh.
Tony tapped his fingers lightly twice on her thigh, like Morse code.
Pepper turned her head and whispered something in Tony's ear.
The voice was very low, so low that only Tony could hear it. Tony's lips curled up slightly, and his hand slid from Pepper's waist to her lower back, pulling her closer to him. Pepper did not resist; she buried her face in the crook of his neck, her lips pressed against his skin.
Maya looked out the window, but her hand moved from her leg to the back of Tony's hand, her fingertips slipping between his fingers.
Just as Tony was about to enjoy his nightlife after a long day of experiments, golden sparks exploded in the center of the laboratory, and Peter walked out of the portal.
Seeing the three about to enter the payment stage, Peter pulled out his phone from his pocket and started snapping photos of the disheveled Tony.
The two women present, though disheveled, were at least still dressed, covering their private parts. Tony, however, was in a different situation; half of his buttocks were exposed.
Peter pointed the phone at Tony: "Arrived at the top of New York City—Avengers Tower. Hey, isn't that Tony Stark?"
