adventurers in the sewers

Chapter 2: Scavenging Corpses in the Sewers, 3 Copper Coins Per Corpse

Louis and his neighbors stuffed the body through a sewer opening and then continued on their way to the Chamber of Commerce.

He seemed lost in thought throughout the journey.

Not long after, he arrived at the Chamber of Commerce's staff entrance.

The place was crowded with job seekers, all as young as him, making him stand out in the crowd.

He stood in front of the crowd for a while, then turned and walked away, plunging into the Adventurers' Guild a hundred meters away.

……

"Mr. Louis, this is your adventurer's badge. You can now go to the quest board to accept quests. We wish you a safe and successful adventure."

The sweet-looking receptionist with long, wine-red hair smiled and handed Louis an iron badge.

Louis nodded and went to the taskbar.

Blackrock City is also known as the City of Adventurers. There are as many branches of the Adventurers' Guild as there are public toilets. The branch where Louis is located is not only responsible for receiving adventurers, but also provides them with fine wine, food and meat.

The guild's dining area was already mostly full, with adventurers of all appearances and temperaments chatting animatedly.

No one noticed the arrival of Louis, the newcomer, so the novel's much-loved plot of showing off and getting slapped in the face naturally didn't happen.

After searching in front of the order column for a while, Louis's eyes lit up.

[Service Offer: Clogged Sewers (Long-Term)]

[Commission Description: The rainy season has overwhelmed Blackrock City's drainage system, causing some channels to become blocked, possibly related to the corpses dumped into various sewers.]

[Commission Request: Locate the body blocking the drain and mark it on the sewer map.]

[Commission Reward: 3 Copper Coins/each]

"As expected, I remember the Adventurers' Guild has such a long-term commission."

Louis was delighted.

If he wants to loot a corpse and collect its attributes, he can just go to the sewers.

But if you can get the bounty while picking up the attributes, wouldn't that be killing two birds with one stone?

Moreover, no one is usually willing to take on such low-level commissions. During the rainy season, the sewers are turbulent, and small monsters can easily escape. In addition, the reward for completing the task is small, making it extremely cost-effective.

Often, after a busy day, you might not even earn ten copper coins.

You could earn more carrying bags at the docks than this.

He took the commission form to the receptionist to register the mission and received the mission item—a map of the underground drainage system.

After leaving his coat at the Adventurers' Guild, Louis walked out and found a nearby manhole cover.

After taking a deep breath, Louis pried open the manhole cover and climbed inside.

As soon as he entered, a stench of various mixed smells made Louis want to vomit. The stench seemed to have materialized, and in a daze, he thought he saw the air in front of him was tinged with the yellowish color of feces.

This world is said to possess extraordinary powers, but such extraordinary powers are far removed from ordinary people. At the very least, no extraordinary person would be willing to do the work of maintaining the sewers.

Louis held his breath and climbed to the bottom, standing on the dry, high edge of the sewer.

He stared at the lifeless, still, stinking water that was almost reaching his feet, remained silent for a moment, then sighed and walked silently into the water.

It may stink a bit, but it's better than fighting goblins in the wild.

The only consolation was that the walls of the sewer were covered with glowing plants, and under the faint blue light, he wasn't completely blind.

Following the waterway, Louis soon arrived at a blocked outlet.

A bloated corpse was lying sideways in front of the drain, surrounded by a pile of accumulated filth, such as household items, dead cats, and dead dogs.

Louis walked to the end of the dry roadside, enduring the stench that almost suffocated him, and tried to reach out his hand, but he couldn't reach the body that was half submerged in the water.

Helpless, he could only take off his shoes and pants and put them aside, then step barefoot into the sticky sewage before finally touching the corpse.

[A pickable attribute has been detected. Pick it up?]

Pick it up!

[You have picked up the corpse of the 'Farmer Adventurer'. Stats: Stamina +1, Farming +1]

Farming skills have been unlocked.

"Is this increase in endurance?"

Louis felt his breathing become longer and more even, his physical fatigue greatly reduced, and his mind was filled with a lot of knowledge about farming.

The life skills attribute is easy to understand; it comes from the life skills that the corpse was good at in life.

The blacksmith apprentice adventurer must have worked as a blacksmith for a period of time before becoming an adventurer, while this farmer adventurer is skilled at farming.

But what are the criteria for acquiring ability points?

It can't be randomly selected, can it?

The sample size was too small, and the system didn't even have a manual. Louis shook his head, deciding to put these things aside for the time being.

He marked the location of the body on the map with a charcoal pencil, and then, with anticipation, touched the body and found a rusty, cheap dagger.

It's probably the kind of trash weapon used by skeleton minions in games.

Even though it was a cheap item that the weapons shop was too lazy to take back, Louis was still very happy.

Getting something for free is always a pleasure.

He took the dagger, returned to the shore, put on his shoes and trousers, and continued on his way.

Louis walked for an unknown amount of time in the dense, capillary-like sewers, until he unknowingly arrived at an area where the bioluminescent plants were sparse.

This river has been stagnant for a long time, and it's likely that the outlet ahead is blocked.

"Squeak squeak squeak—"

The faint squeak of a rodent alerted Louis. He quickly bent down, gripped his dagger, and cautiously looked in the direction from which the sound came.

Under the pale blue light, a shadow, about a meter long including its head and tail, appeared in Louis's line of sight, lying beside the water outlet.

It was an outrageously large rat, standing on something solid in the riverbed, gnawing at something with its head down.

Louis approached stealthily, and upon seeing the rat's movements, a chill ran down his spine.

The rat's head was repeatedly going in and out of the abdominal cavity of a corpse, each time pulling out a small piece of rotten, whitish flesh.

Its eyes, which flickered intermittently, emitted a scarlet light.

In an instant, Louis identified the creature as a small monster called a gray rot rat, which, according to the Adventurers' Guild's monster encyclopedia, was one level less dangerous than a goblin.

These creatures are widely distributed in the sewers of human cities, and they often emerge from the sewers to steal food stored by citizens. There are even records of them eating babies and children.

Although the gray rot rat is a solitary monster and lacks the intelligence of a goblin, it should not be underestimated.

Its teeth are full of germs and toxins, and if Louis is bitten, he will probably follow in the footsteps of his predecessors.

Louis stood a short distance away, hesitating whether to rush up and kill the gray rot rat.

In the end, he decided to take a risk.

Sooner or later, we'll have to deal with those monstrous gray rotten rats that roam the sewers.

Moreover, besides picking up the corpses, he also wanted to conduct an experiment during this adventure.

Try to see if the monster you kill loses any attributes.
