Chapter 28 Visiting Dorn, Meeting Doran
Hearing Oris's words, Alexandra gave up struggling, her pale blue eyes fixed on Oris's face as she said, "A duel must be fought with all our might. If I lose, I'll go with you." Oris released Alexandra, and amidst the cheers and jeers of the surrounding crowd, took her hand and led her away from Mance-Red's camp.
Over the next two days, Oris accompanied Alyssa and her friends from the Mance Rayder tribe as they bid farewell. Afterward, Oris's party traveled west to Hardhome, then sailed south back to Essos. The southward voyage was not as smooth as the northward one, and the group made frequent stops. After half a month, Oris and his party resupplyed on Crab Island. This time, Oris did not continue to hide in the ship's cabin, but instead openly toured Crab Island with Alyssa, since he certainly would not be able to return to Westeros anytime soon.
During the two days of resupply, Oris even considered entering House Seti's ancestral castle to see the legendary Varian battleaxe. Varian weapons in Westeros are few in number, mostly swords; true long weapons should only be found in House Seti, but no one has ever seen one.
Two days later, Oris and his party continued their southward journey. It was another two weeks before they resupplyed. This time, Oris chose Soulhill, Dorne, as their resupply point. Most of the animals on Oris's ship were not adapted to the hot Dorne environment, so Oris did not take Durotan off the ship. Instead, he rode off on horseback, leading a group of 20 men and Alyssa south towards Sunspear. Oris did not conceal his whereabouts along the way, sporting a head of silver-white hair. He traveled by day and rested by night, behaving like a spoiled young master. It was five days later when the group arrived at Sunspear.
Sunspear City sits on a small, sandy peninsula, surrounded by the sea on three sides, with Shadow City to the west. Oris and his party entered the city without causing much of a commotion. However, when Oris was about to visit Doran Martell at Flowing Gardens, a beautiful but petite woman approached him first. Oris met this woman in his hotel room. She had olive skin, large black eyes, and long, glossy black curly hair. Oris tried to recall her appearance but couldn't find a clear image.
As Oris sized up the woman, she was also sizing him up. Before Oris could speak, she said, "My name is Arianne Martell, the eldest daughter of Doran Martell." She extended her hand to shake Oris's. Oris instinctively shook hands with Arianne Martell and said, "I wonder what brings Miss Arianne to see me?" After Oris finished speaking, he noticed that Arianne Martell was still staring at his face without saying a word. Puzzled, he released his hand from Arianne's and sat back down in his chair.
Seeing that the other person was staring at his face, Oris had time to recall information about Ariane Martell. This woman had been secretly engaged to Viserys without his knowledge. After reaching marriageable age, she was assigned by Prince Doran to marry an elderly lord, which made Ariane resent Doran and later had numerous lovers.
Oris's thoughts abruptly stopped, only to hear Ariane speak from across the room, "My father sent me to greet you on your visit to Sunspear City, and it seems I am the most suitable person to do so." Oris listened to Ariane's provocative words without flinching. Having seen it all in his past life, and though he hadn't yet tasted the real meat in this life, he already had a beauty like Alyssa by his side, so he seemed unfazed by Ariane's allure.
She simply replied politely, "Thank you for your kind offer, Your Highness. I've come to discuss His Majesty Viserys' affairs and intend to meet with Prince Doran." Ariane only knew that Oris was a wealthy merchant in Pentos, but she didn't know his relationship with Viserys, so she tentatively inquired, "What are His Majesty Viserys' specific plans?" Hearing Ariane's words, Oris knew she was completely unaware of his situation. After all, Viserys was practically a mascot at Oris Manor; his decisions were likely limited to the two maids in his room.
After a moment's thought, Oris said, "I still need to discuss the specifics with Prince Doran in person. Even Princess Ariane probably can't make the decision for Prince Doran." Upon hearing Oris's words, Ariane's expression immediately turned sour. She hurriedly took her leave and departed from the hotel where Oris was staying.
Oris had only subtly provoked Arianne's nerves to realize that Arianne's relationship with Doran was indeed strained, just as rumored. Moreover, Oris could tell from Arianne's unauthorized visit that the woman wasn't exactly clever. His own blatant entry into Sunspear with his silver hair would surely alert Robert, and Arianne, representing Prince Doran, visiting Oris was undoubtedly a slap in the face to the Iron Throne, potentially shattering the facade of peace maintained by Jon Arryn. After all, relations between Dorne and Highgarden, and between the Stormlands and the Westerlands, weren't exactly amicable.
The next morning, Auris, carrying a bronze dagger, went to visit Prince Doran in the Water Gardens. Upon entering, Auris immediately noticed a figure in a wheelchair. After surveying the surroundings, he spotted a bearded monk and a tall, dark-haired man behind the man in the wheelchair. Auris bowed and addressed Doran, saying, "Greetings, Prince Doran. I have come to pay my respects and present gifts on the orders of His Majesty Viserys." He then handed the bronze dagger to a maid and continued to observe the dark-haired man behind Doran. The dark-haired man, noticing Auris's gaze, calmly returned it, but his eyes held a hint of arrogance and murderous intent.
Oris had two purposes in coming to Sunspear: first, to swagger into the city and incite conflict between Dorne and the Iron Throne; and second, to use his mission to Dorne to demonstrate to the high-ranking officials of the Kingdom of the Three Daughters that he indeed intended to send troops to Westeros, thereby continuing to lull everyone into a false sense of security.
Doran took the short sword offered by Oris, toyed with it in his hand for a moment, then handed it to the black-haired man, asking, "I've never seen a weapon made of this material before." Oris replied, "This is a new metal forged at Oris Manor, which we call orogen. Although it's heavier than ordinary metals, like Valyrian steel, it can easily cut through other metals. Your Highness is welcome to try it." He then watched Doran's expression closely.
