Chapter 29: Breaking Off the Engagement, Encountering Pirates
Upon hearing Oris's words, Doron gestured to the tall man beside him. The man took the spear from the guard's hand, gripped the hilt with one hand, and swung a short sword with the other. The orogen short sword and the spearhead collided violently, and the point where the spearhead and the short sword made contact instantly broke off. Doron was astonished at the sight, while Oris remained expressionless.
The tall man who was testing the sword carefully examined the blade, as if trying to see a notch in it. After a thorough inspection, he sheathed the short sword again.
Seeing this, Prince Doran spoke up, "What a fine sword! It should be no worse than any of the Vulcan weapons. What do you want from such a generous gift?" Doran waited for Oris's reaction. Oris thought for a moment and then said softly, "I wish to have Princess Daenerys's engagement to Prince Quentin dissolved." Doran didn't react to Oris's answer. Instead, the tall man beside him spoke up, "Can you make that decision for Viserys?"
Oris, unperturbed by the tall man's interruption, replied directly, "This is also His Majesty Viserys's intention. He still wishes to maintain his engagement with Princess Arianne, but Her Highness Daenerys has other plans." Doran nodded slowly, and the tall man remained silent. Oris breathed a sigh of relief, inwardly thinking, "I knew Doran didn't value Daenerys, but I didn't expect him to be so indifferent. In the original story, Daenerys was unaware of her engagement to Quentin and married Khal Drogo, and Doran didn't intervene; he probably already wanted to annul the engagement."
After briefly discussing some business matters related to the manor with Doran, Oris took his leave. At this point, the tall man beside Doran began to speak, "Brother, why did you agree to him? Quentin has already agreed to marry Guinevere. Originally, the secret engagement was a covert alliance. Now it seems that Viserys' strength is not enough to launch a counterattack against Westeros, so the original alliance is naturally null and void. I suppose this kid probably wants to sell Daenerys for a good price to expand his own power."
After hearing Doran's words, Oberyn Martell did not reply. In fact, he was the same man Viserys had met at the Sea King's Palace. After meeting Viserys, he immediately determined that Viserys was not a capable man. When he returned to Dorne, he had suggested to his brother that Arianne and Viserys's engagement be dissolved, but his brother refused.
Oris returned to his inn, reflecting on the day's events. He hadn't taken the opportunity to annul Viserys's engagement, and Doran had tacitly agreed, perhaps due to Ariane's premarital loss of virginity. It seemed unlikely that Ariane would find a suitable marriage partner among the nobles of equal standing in Westeros, and Viserys remained one of Doran's options—even if he couldn't launch a counterattack on Westeros, he could still use him as a tool for revenge against Robert.
For the next few days, Oris visited Doran daily. Besides discussing trade, Doran also hoped Oris could forge a suit of orthocyanin armor for Oberon. It was then that Oris realized the burly man behind Doran that day was the infamous Oberyn Martell. After hearing Doran's request, Oris didn't immediately agree. Instead, he reiterated with Doran the drawbacks of orthocyanin armor: while orthocyanin was hard and impact-resistant, its weight was too great for full-body armor. Ultimately, after discussions with Oberon, they decided to forge chainmail. Seeing this, Oris turned to Doran and made a deal. In the end, Doran traded Mirasis's leg bone for Oberon's orthocyanin armor.
Mirathys, the second largest of the three founding dragons of the Targaryens, was killed by Dorne. Apart from his skull, which was returned to the Iron Throne, his remaining dragon bones were kept in Dorne's vaults. Oris demanded Mirathys's leg bones to rework his lance. Although the lance he had previously made from orchardite was the right weight, its handle was too heavy, affecting the effectiveness of Oris's swing. Therefore, Oris planned to replace it with dragon bones.
Oris lit a furnace in Dorne and used the orthogonal ingots he carried with him and the salvaged lance shafts to forge countless orthogonal rings. While they were still warm, he strung them together with tools and then pressed them together. After five days of forging, the orthogonal chainmail was finally completed.
After Oris handed the orthogonal chainmail to Doran, Doran immediately sent people to test the chainmail. Without wearing outer armor, the orthogonal chainmail was able to completely withstand the blows of swords. After the test was completed, Doran delivered the dragon bone to Oris as agreed.
After receiving his payment, Oris left immediately. He had been away from the manor for more than half a year and was still unaware of its current situation. He needed to hurry back to make some preparations.
Upon returning to his ship, Oris immediately ordered the fleet to turn back. As the large ship sailed to the waters of the Stone Steps Islands, Oris, through the hurricane's vision, spotted three rowboats rapidly approaching his ship from the south. Continuing to scout south, Oris discovered another large ship near Bloodstone Island also heading in his direction. Realizing he could not avoid the smaller boats, Oris immediately ordered his archers to prepare, while the sailors rowed eastward at full speed. When the three small boats were less than fifty paces from Oris's ship, Oris ordered his archers to fire a volley. Instantly, most of the pirates on one of the small boats were killed. However, the other two small boats had already secured their grappling hooks to Oris's ship. Seeing this, Oris drew his Red Dragon and Night sword, cut several chains, and ordered his swordsmen and shieldmen to prepare for boarding.
About three hundred men from the two ships climbed up the iron chains toward Oris's large ship. Under Oris's orders, the archers on the ship split into groups: one group continued to suppress the first small ship, while the other group shot at the pirates who were climbing. By the time the pirates actually jumped onto Oris's ship, only one in ten remained. The rest surrendered under the swordsmen and shieldmen.
Oris and his men boarded a small pirate ship, intending to loot it before returning to their own vessel, when suddenly they heard horns sounding from their ship. Oris stepped out of the cabin and saw a large pirate ship rapidly approaching, its ram about to strike. Knowing it was too late to return, Oris was surprised by the pirates' speed. He immediately entered the body of a hurricane and used it to send a message to Alexandra, instructing her to take command of the crew.
Alexandra had been by Oris's side these past few days, and her martial prowess had earned her the approval of many officers. During Oris's absence, as long as Alexandra held her ground, she could ensure the safety of the people on the ship. Perhaps fearing damage to the large ship, the pirates lowered their grappling hooks and engaged in close-quarters boarding combat when the two ships approached. Seeing that the archers were not very effective, Alexandra immediately ordered them to use longswords and prepare to fight the pirates.
