Chapter 43 Interrogation of Mormont, Campaign against Ries
Jorah clenched his fists upon hearing Oris's words and whispered, "You've been to Bear Island?" Oris, seeing Jorah's clenched fists as if he were about to fight, stood up from his chair and said as he walked, "I haven't been to Bear Island, but I met a well-informed friend in the borderlands. He said that the former lord of Bear Island married a lady from the Hightoar family, but Bear Island was too poor to satisfy his wife. In the end, he was to be beheaded for selling slaves, but he escaped. I also heard that his wife was taken by a wealthy merchant and became his concubine."
After saying this, Oris went behind Jorah, but Jorah Mormont loosened his fists, turned around, knelt down in front of Oris, and said, "Yes, I am the Lord of Bear Island that you mentioned, and my wife was taken away by the trading prince Treig-Omeren of Oris. I joined Daeron in the hope of avenging myself on Treig-Omeren."
Oris looked down at Jorah's bald head, feeling bored, and returned to his seat. He said, "Northerners really don't have much of a sense of humor, do they? Is that all you wanted to say?"
Turning around, Jorah, still kneeling, trembled uncontrollably upon hearing Oris's words. Oris stared at Jorah's trembling body, waiting for him to confess. A long time passed, and seeing that Jorah remained silent, Oris's patience wore thin. He slowly walked towards Jorah, patting his armor. "There's a Bolton family saying: 'A naked man has few secrets, a skinned man has no secrets.'" He then turned and left the room. Cold sweat seeped into the floor as Jorah knelt.
Oris stepped out the door and looked up at his personal guard commander, Tian Shou, saying, "Have someone keep a close eye on his every move." After that, Oris spent his time either recruiting and training soldiers or resting. After all, such a long campaign had taken its toll, even for someone with superhuman physical abilities.
Two nights later, Tian Shou shouted into Oris's tent, "Lord Mormont has come to see you." Oris then ordered Tian Shou to bring Jorah in. Upon entering the tent, Jorah immediately knelt down, but Oris paid no attention, squinting at Jorah, "Have you thought it through and decided to confess?"
Jorah Mormont buried his head deep in the ground. "Yes, my lord. Before coming to Lord Daeron's side, I learned about the Targaryen orphan and reported the information to Varys. Varys instructed me to find an opportunity to approach the Targaryen orphan and assassinate him." Oris had anticipated this and cursed, "That fat bastard Robert can't even handle his own wife, yet he wants to cause me trouble."
After Oris finished speaking, he stared at Jorah and asked, "You haven't told me about your assassination plan yet." Jorah raised his head, but still didn't dare to look Oris in the eye, and said listlessly, "Varis's men have already made contact with Rhys's Alchemist Guild and will use poisoned arrows to assassinate you adults during your siege." Oris laughed at this childish plan, staring into Jorah's eyes and said, "You're quite honest. From now on, you'll work for me. If you still want Lynise Hightower, I'll hand her over to you after Rhys is breached." After Oris finished speaking, he dismissed Jorah.
He was preparing for his plan after conquering Rhys. The other two city-states of the Three Daughters Kingdom had already been taken by Oris. Although Rhys was the strongest, its people were mostly Valyrians, which would make it easier for Oris to rule.
The next morning, after being informed by Tian Shou, Darren entered Oris's tent and immediately complained, "Now I have to announce myself to see my own brother." Oris smiled, "Your status is different now, so the pomp and circumstance must be different as well. You also need to protect your people, and be on guard against assassinations by the remnants of the three races." Darren nodded in agreement and then asked Oris, "The army is ready; when will we depart?"
After listening to Darren's words, Oris pondered for a moment before saying, "Oris should already know about the defeat. We should act quickly and decisively, and set out after breakfast." Darren immediately went out excitedly to lead the troops; this was the first time the young man had ever led an army to attack someone else.
After Jorah Mormont told him about the assassination plan, Oris had his guards test the poison for him before each meal, since Oris's poisons were world-renowned. After breakfast, Oris rode Durotan and the army south, while Daeron rode a long-winged dragon alongside the army. Previously, when they were besieged and there was no wildfire, the long-winged dragon Robert had no room to perform, so Daeron seized the opportunity to have some fun.
Two days later, Oris led his army to the southern shore of the disputed land. Oris had already used the hurricane to conduct reconnaissance. After seeing the pirate flag of Salado-Sane in the distance, Oris ordered the entire army to prepare to board the ship. This time, Oris brought most of the able-bodied men from the fortress, plus the remaining soldiers, for a total of 5000 men. This was the largest force Oris had ever led.
After boarding the ship, Oris ignored the lovey-dovey Daenerys and Daren, and instead called Jorah to his side. In the presence of Alexandra and Jennifer, he talked to Jorah about Westeros. Through Jorah's account, Oris learned that his communication channels with Varys were only one-way and could not pass messages to Westeros. This disappointed Oris, and his original intention to share some gossip with Jorah to influence Westeros was also lost.
Oris promised the Three-Eyed Raven not to set foot in Westeros and not to affect the development of the situation there. But now that the story has begun, Oris has received news that Robert and Eddard are already on their way back to King's Landing. He still wants to spread some gossip, but he has no one to go with. Oris has thought about it. As long as he leaks some key information, as long as it's not done by his own people, it won't be considered a violation of the rules. Oris really wants to see Robert get riddled by dragons.
A day later, Oris and his fleet landed at the port of Ries. They were not stopped by any other fleet, and the ships in the fleet even obediently stayed at the port. Oris was puzzled but did not investigate further. Now that the enemy was at the gates, Ries's forces were already small, and they were probably all holed up in the city to defend it.
When Oris's army arrived at the city walls, he saw the numerous banners fluttering atop the walls, the impeccable discipline of the defending troops, and even a number of dragon-shooting crossbows. Upon seeing this spectacle, Oris rode his Durotan forward to the city walls and called out, "Are all of Oris's governors present?"
