Chapter 4 Ascension
"Hey, have you heard?"
Under the overpass, two homeless men wrapped in blankets huddled together. The one speaking was a thin young man with sunken eyes and a cheap cigarette between his fingers.
"What did you hear?" The other homeless man, an old man with a thick beard, didn't even bother to open his eyes after hearing the young man's words, and casually replied.
"A demon!" The young man was a little agitated. Realizing he'd spoken too loudly, he lowered his voice and continued, "Haven't you noticed? A lot of people have been disappearing from this area lately. Rumors are circulating that they were taken to hell by some demon..."
The old man scoffed, turned over, and stopped looking at him. "Bullshit! What demon? He was probably just dragged into drug experiments. Is that kind of thing rare? Hmm, but the words 'demon' and 'hell' are quite fitting."
"It's different! This time it's really different! I heard that before those homeless people disappear, there's a really strong, really heavy fishy smell around them! Like right here..."
The young man's voice suddenly stopped.
A strong fishy smell was rapidly spreading through my nasal cavity.
"...like this now."
The old man's eyes snapped open.
The two heard the sound almost simultaneously.
Heavy, repetitive footsteps echoed from the darkness not far away, thudding on the concrete floor.
As the two watched intently, the figure in the darkness gradually became clearer.
That's not a person.
The fish's head, protruding eyes, and dark green scales gleamed moistly in the moonlight, leaving a wet footprint with each step it took.
"My God..." The young man's hands trembled uncontrollably, and the cigarette between his fingers fell to the ground.
They both wanted to run away. Their brains were frantically commanding their legs to stand up, but their bodies wouldn't obey them. Just looking at the monster, a vast, indescribable amount of information began to flood their minds, as if someone had poured the entire ocean into their skulls.
"Please...please don't come any closer..." The old man slumped to the ground, his pants already soaked, muttering some kind of prayer, but his voice grew softer and softer, becoming increasingly indistinct.
Unfortunately, none of this was of any use to Creel.
He walked up to the two men, placed a hand on the old man's head, and a surge of blue energy flowed from his hand into the old man. After the old man lay down on the ground, the next one was the young man.
After being infused with energy, the two began to tremble violently, a sticky liquid appeared on their skin, and their bones made a faint cracking sound under their flesh, as if something was rearranging itself from the inside.
This is a capability that Creel has discovered over the past few days.
He possesses the ability to control water, and can also transform other humans into his own kind. Those transformed by him can also learn the ability to control water, but they do not have the ability to continue transforming.
On the ground, the trembling of the two homeless men gradually stopped.
The young man was the first to complete the transformation. He slowly propped himself up and looked down at his hands—webbed hands covered with dark green scales. The itchy feeling from the drug addiction had completely disappeared.
Next was the old man, a fat man whose foot had been rotten for many years due to diabetes. At this moment, both feet were intact, and even the knee joint effusion that had bothered him for many years had disappeared. He tentatively stood up without pain or the aching sensation of bones rubbing against each other.
The two looked up at Kriel.
At the same time, a dense chorus of footsteps sounded from all around, and one identical figure after another emerged from the shadows—ten, twenty, thirty… More and more figures appeared from the darkness, filling the entire street.
They stood silently, their dark green scales neatly arranged in the moonlight, their protruding eyes reflecting a cold light.
Only then did they realize that the missing homeless people had not been taken to hell by the devil.
It has been elevated!
The skinny old man's knees bent again, but this time, not out of fear, but out of another kind of fanatical emotion, and he knelt before Kriel.
Kriel glanced around.
There were 103 in total, more than 80 of whom were veterans like him, who were left to die on the roadside after the country had squeezed out their last bit of value.
The other 20 or so were similar, people who were dignifiedly erased from the world of respectable people by society.
The quantity is sufficient.
Kriel turned around, facing the brightly lit city.
"Let's go, I'll take you to get revenge. It's time to show them our fury!"
Having said that, Kriel took the first step.
Behind him, hundreds of figures followed at the same time.
……
The second floor of an old apartment building in the St. Clair neighborhood.
The television was on, showing the evening news.
"...Police have confirmed at least four homicides in St. Clair and surrounding areas tonight. The causes of death are still under investigation. However, multiple witnesses have reported large amounts of unidentified liquid and unusual odors at the scene. Police urge residents to stay indoors as much as possible tonight..."
The news anchor's voice came from the television. On the sofa, a white woman in her forties was nestled in the arms of a black man, neither of them paying much attention.
The woman's name was Eileen, Creel's ex-wife.
"Four murders..." Eileen muttered, picking up the remote to change the channel.
Taylor put his arm around her waist and said casually, "Don't worry, don't you know how strong I am? I'm not a cripple, protecting you is a piece of cake."
Eileen suddenly thought of something and chuckled softly.
"You mean that cripple... how is he now? I wish he had died in those four murders."
Taylor tilted his head and then smiled.
"That good-for-nothing is probably already starved to death; why would he need anyone else to lift a finger?"
The two looked at each other and smiled.
And at that very moment.
"Smack."
The sound from the television abruptly stopped, and the lights went out.
"What happened? Did the power trip?" Eileen frowned and instinctively reached for her phone on the coffee table.
But she didn't touch the phone; instead, she touched a slippery, cold liquid.
The flavors followed immediately.
A strong fishy smell wafted in from all directions, as if the entire room had suddenly been submerged in a giant fishpond.
"Taylor?" The bizarre situation caused fear to spread rapidly in Eileen's heart, and she looked at Taylor beside her with a trembling voice.
"Don't worry, it's nothing..."
Taylor's voice had barely begun when it turned into a short, muffled groan.
In the darkness, a large green hand reached out from behind Taylor, its five fingers gripping Taylor's face like steel hoops, lifting him directly off the sofa!
Taylor, who was 1.85 meters tall, was lifted into the air with his feet off the ground and kicked desperately.
Then, a hoarse yet shrill voice rang out from the darkness.
"Unfortunately, the homeless man wasn't killed."
As soon as he finished speaking, Kree tightened his grip on Taylor's head!
Taylor's struggle came to an abrupt end.
"Crunch."
It was like crushing a grape; the warm liquid splashed all over Eileen's face.
She wanted to scream, but it was as if something was blocking her throat, and she could only let out a faint whimper.
The blood-stained hand loosened its grip, and Taylor's headless body slammed to the floor like a log.
Immediately afterwards, Kriel stepped forward, grabbed Eileen by the neck, and lifted her up.
In the darkness, the protruding eyeballs on the fish's head were almost within reach, radiating a chilling aura.
"Why...why..." Eileen choked out, her pupils dilated to their limit from suffocation and terror. "Why did you kill me..."
Instead of answering the question directly, Kriel restored half of his face from the Deep One form.
Moonlight streamed through the broken window, illuminating half of the human face.
Kriel.
He was her ex-husband, the man she had betrayed.
He smiled.
Eileen's pupils suddenly dilated to their maximum.
Then, her entire body was easily torn apart by Kriel, like a rag doll!
"Alright, next target."
