A priest in North America, what the hell is the Demon Gate system?
Chapter 24 The Priest and the Chinese Laborers on the Railway
"It's haunted, right? What exactly is going on?"
Li Ang's expression remained calm, as if he had become accustomed to paranormal events.
Li Ang's composure slightly moved Wang Bingbing. In fact, she had already visited many priests and pastors in big cities. Some would immediately say some platitudes like "The Lord will bless you," while others would try to make excuses.
The few people who finally came to see it were all scared away. If I hadn't heard that a capable priest had recently come to my hometown, I wouldn't have made the special trip back from Pittsburgh.
He immediately asked about the details, and his calm and composed expression instantly gained Wang Bingbing a sense of trust.
"At first, it was just that tools would often mysteriously disappear, and measuring instruments would suddenly malfunction."
Wang Bingbing crossed her legs, her black stockings rubbing lightly against the bench. "Last Monday night, the workers complained of hearing tapping sounds on the rails, like someone was working there. At first, we thought someone was rolling up the tracks, but you know, that kind of thing almost never happens in America."
"So the workers went over and found several figures standing on the tracks, wearing very retro work clothes, with their backs to them and braids tied up at the back of their heads. The workers mustered up their courage and went up, but the figures immediately disappeared."
Li Ang frowned slightly. This sounded like the word "vengeful spirit" written all over his face. He couldn't very well say it was a mirage.
"Construction has stopped now." Wang Bingbing's beautiful eyes stared directly at Li Ang; they were very pretty, somewhat like Ada Wong's, to be honest.
"A day's delay in the construction period means a loss of thousands of dollars. Those Irishmen are too expensive. I hope you can perform a purification ritual to appease...whether it's the workers' emotions or those things."
Li Ang stroked his chin, pondering, "Why are there so many outrageous things happening in Uldum... Could it be that the force controlling James is at work again?"
Then, without changing his expression, he asked, "Is there any other information? You said those figures had braids, could it be?"
Wang Bingbing seemed to have been prepared, and gently shook her finger with light red nail polish: "This line is a branch line built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1876, connecting the coal mines in Oldham to the main line. It was basically built by Chinese laborers at the time, after all, after the completion of the Pacific Railroad, a large number of Chinese laborers migrated eastward, and Pennsylvania, as an industrial state, needed a large number of railroad workers."
Li Ang fell silent. The word "Chinese laborers" instantly brought to mind a flood of historical fragments.
In the latter half of the 19th century, a large number of Chinese laborers, either voluntarily or through slavery, paid an enormous price to cross the Pacific Ocean to America to build railroads, mine, and do the hardest and most arduous jobs, yet they received only a fraction of the wages of white people and faced discrimination and violence.
Many people's remains are buried next to the railway they built with their own hands.
If they are indeed the vengeful spirits of Chinese laborers... then their number is probably not just a few, but likely a vast ocean, and their resentment is definitely not small.
Li Ang quickly calculated in his mind that if multiple evil spirits appeared at the same time, it would mean a group fight was about to break out.
I'm currently at the second level of Qi Refining, and I can only use Blood Fiend Finger a maximum of three times. My Breath Concealing Technique won't last more than a few minutes. There's only Sherry in my Soul Banner, and my Holy Judgment ammo is limited. With this setup, going into a team fight is basically a suicide mission.
"I'm not Yujiro..."
Li Ang calmly assessed the current situation and decided not to take the risk. After all, his way of enduring was to survive like Han Laomo!
Besides, the reward for doing site purification like this is only a few coins. You might as well use this time to have a "friendly exchange" with Mayor Joel.
"Miss Wang," Li Ang said sincerely.
"It's not that I don't want to help, but based on your description, this is no longer a simple exorcism that can be resolved with a sprinkle of holy water. It might require requesting assistance from the Philadelphia Diocese..."
Li Ang's attitude was very tactful; he genuinely didn't want to take any risks.
Wang Bingbing looked at him quietly without speaking immediately. Instead, she took out a brown paper envelope from her high-end-looking leather bag and placed it between the two of them.
"Father Li, we Chinese value practicality." Her voice was gentle and sincere.
"The losses caused by the delay are far more than this amount. Here is a thousand dollars in cash, which we hope will express our support for the church."
Li Ang's gaze fell on the envelope, inwardly scoffing, "Is he trying to bribe me with money? This is an insult!"
Seeing that Li Ang didn't speak, Wang Bingbing sighed inwardly, "So he really wants to raise the price... Oh well, if it can be resolved, then it's all negotiable."
Just as Li Ang was about to refuse again, Wang Bingbing took out another envelope.
"I understand your difficulties, Father Lee, but applying to Philadelphia is indeed too slow, and we cannot afford to wait."
"Here is four thousand US dollars, making a total of five thousand US dollars. We hope you can make an exception. Afterwards, our Wang family will continue to make regular donations to St. Michael's Church every year."
"I wanted to refuse loudly, but she was offering too much..." Years later, Li Ang would still think of this scene.
"Miss Wang, helping those in need is God's will and my sacred duty! How can you measure this sacred responsibility with money?" Li Ang's expression turned serious.
Wang Bingbing was slightly taken aback, and for the first time, a look of helplessness appeared on her usually calm face.
Li Ang stood up and looked down at her, his imposing figure obscuring Wang Bingbing's face. His hands had unconsciously gripped the two envelopes in Wang Bingbing's hand.
"But! The Lord teaches us to be happy to accept the kindness of others. I've accepted this request, and I'll go to the scene tonight at eight o'clock."
Wang Bingbing was a little stunned by this sudden turn of events, but her good upbringing allowed her to quickly regain her composure. She nodded gently and said, "Then I'll leave it to you. This is my contact information."
She left a beautiful business card, stood up to say goodbye, and her high heels clicked crisply on the church floor.
"Wang Bingbing, Senior Partner, Pittsburgh Tiangong Group..."
Li Ang glanced at the business card, nodded, and said goodbye to Wang Bingbing.
As soon as the church doors closed again, Li Ang immediately opened the envelope. A bright green hundred-dollar bill slid out, brand new, seemingly still carrying the scent of ink from the Federal Reserve's printing press. Li Ang examined it carefully, his expression as if he were admiring the first manuscript of the Bible.
He quickly counted them: fifty, no more, no less.
"Amen, thank you, Brother Jesus." Li Ang stuffed the banknotes back into the envelope and put them into his suit pocket.
"It's not that I lack a firm stance, but rather that I need to take initiative."
Li Ang sat down on the bench and began to ponder.
The railway, Chinese laborers, vengeful spirits... This whole thing is strange. If they are just naturally formed ghosts, why are they appearing now? You have to remember that the Chinese laborers were from the 19th century, and this railway is not a recent construction project.
Who disturbed the sleeping souls? Or, like James, is there some other force manipulating things behind the scenes?
"Sherry, Goddess of War, come out!" Li Ang whispered.
The Soul Banner appeared in his palm, and with a gentle tremor, Sherry's figure floated out.
Shirley yawned and lazily floated in mid-air: "What...?"
Li Ang looked up and immediately saw the unguarded area under the skirt. He sneered, "Hmm, fine."
Shirley was startled, then quickly realized what was happening. She immediately pressed down on her skirt, adopted an extremely ladylike posture, and shouted with her ears burning red:
"You! You filthy priest!!"
"Hehe, just trying to lighten the mood!" Li Ang chuckled, reminiscing about the Victorian-era lingerie style.
"I'll head back if there's nothing else. I'm really fed up." Shirley turned her head away, her face flushed, clearly not wanting to talk any further.
"Let's get down to business. I need to consult you about some historical issues," Li Ang said seriously, no longer joking.
