A priest in North America, what the hell is the Demon Gate system?
Chapter 27 The Priest and Folk Songs
The flashlight beam made Li Ang's face appear somewhat pale.
Wang Bingbing took two steps forward and focused her flashlight on the abandoned traffic light pole.
"Indeed... we seemed to have passed by one like this when we set off." She frowned and looked at her smartwatch.
"We've been walking for almost twenty minutes now."
"Tsk, don't all signal lights look pretty much the same? There are at least a dozen of these along the old railway line."
Pete muttered something behind him, then kicked a piece of gravel that hit the traffic light, cracking the already weathered lampshade.
Sister Nia didn't speak, but subconsciously moved closer to Li Ang, tightly clutching the crucifix on her chest.
Li Ang ignored Pete, closed his eyes, and activated his divine sense.
Divine consciousness spread out like ripples, illuminating soil, railway tracks, black silk, sleeping birds...
"Strange, everything is normal..." Li Ang frowned slightly. To be honest, it was so normal it was a little eerie.
"Something unusual is bound to happen. It's not that we're afraid of monsters in dungeons, it's that we're afraid of dungeons not spawning monsters."
"Father?" Nia whispered.
Li Ang opened his eyes, a red glint flashing unconsciously in them, and nodded.
"It's alright, let's keep going, Mr. Pete. How much longer until we reach the sighting location?"
"Ten minutes at most, Father. Are you in a hurry?" Pete spat again, his tone unfriendly.
Li Ang ignored the guy and turned to Wang Bingbing, saying in Chinese:
"Make a note of this location; hopefully, it's just my imagination."
Wang Bingbing was taken aback, then nodded.
"Hey! Don't speak a language I don't understand!" Pete shouted.
The group of four continued onward, but the fog grew thicker and thicker. They used to be able to see the distant railway tracks by moonlight, but now they could only see things within four or five meters.
Seemingly to ease the tension, Pitt sang an Irish folk song, which, to be honest, was really awful, but it did manage to distract everyone.
Soon, Li Ang stopped again, looking at what was in front of him with a furrowed brow.
"What's wrong, Father?" Because of the thick fog, Nia almost bumped into Li Ang's back without noticing.
"Look here," Li Ang said, pointing to the traffic light in front of him.
"It's just another traffic light, what's the problem?" Pete said, one hand in his pocket and the other holding a flashlight.
"No!" Wang Bingbing's tone suddenly became urgent, sweat streamed down her pretty face, and she focused her flashlight directly on the lampshade of the traffic light.
Pete casually followed the light, and his pupils instantly contracted!
Because there was a tiny crack on the lampshade, caused by Pete kicking a pebble earlier!
"Oh! This! We're back again!" Nia's fingers trembled slightly, and she subconsciously shrank closer to Li Ang.
"So, it really is a ghost wall?" Li Ang stroked his chin and looked at Wang Bingbing.
"A ghost wall?" Nia had obviously never heard of this term before.
"They just can't get out of there, they keep going in circles. The scientific explanation is probably that they've lost their sense of direction..." Wang Bingbing chimed in.
Pete suddenly chuckled, "Come on, Father, you're just lost. With this thick fog and so many railway crossings, it's perfectly normal to get lost."
He patted the walkie-talkie hanging from his waist. "Should I call a few young men to come and pick us up?"
"Give it a try," Li Ang said calmly.
Pete picked up the walkie-talkie and pressed the call button: "Hey, Happy Hometown, this is Pete. Send a few people to pick us up."
However, only a hissing noise echoed in the air.
"Base? Is anyone there?"
Pete frowned, changed the channel, and tried again, but there was still no response.
He shook the walkie-talkie: "Fuck! The fog's probably too thick; the signal's not very good."
Nia gently tugged at Li Ang's sleeve: "Father...why don't we turn back?"
"Going back might be the same." Li Ang shook his head, his gaze fixed on the depths of the railway. "Let's just assume we've taken the wrong turn. Didn't Mr. Pete say it's another ten minutes' walk from here? Everyone, please pay attention to the route."
"Yes!" Pete, as if receiving authoritative confirmation, shook his flashlight and muttered:
"There's a tunnel ahead. Once you pass through it, that's where the workers said they saw those ghostly figures."
Li Ang quickly calculated in his mind that if it really was a ghost wall, then it was at most a low-level illusion, and there was no reason for his divine sense to be trapped by such a low-level method.
Unless... the thing trapping them has a higher cultivation level than expected.
Wang Bingbing nodded and naturally walked to the other side of Li Ang, forming a triangle with Nia.
Pete glanced at it, pursed his lips, and still followed at the back.
The four continued on their way, but the fog had grown even thicker.
Now the flashlight beam can only illuminate the area underfoot, and the beam becomes blurry in the fog. It's very quiet, with almost no other sound besides footsteps.
Except for the little tune Pitt was humming in the background.
The tune sounded like a very disjointed limerick, which, in Li Ang's opinion, could be described as Irish rap.
"...The Irish were far more capable than the Chinese in building the railway back then..."
"Did you know that the most dangerous section of the Pacific Railroad was built by the Irish..."
"Chinese people? They just take jobs for low wages..."
Nia walked very carefully. Her little leather shoes were not easy to walk on the gravel road in the thick fog, and she almost tripped twice, but Li Ang caught her in time.
"Are you scared?" Li Ang asked in a low voice.
"A little... but with you here, it's much better." Nia honestly admitted, but then gave a bright smile.
Li Ang smiled. Wang Bingbing glanced at him but didn't say anything. Her walking posture was very steady, which meant she must hike often.
We walked for about five more minutes.
As expected, the three of them returned to the traffic light.
Li Ang stared at the traffic lights, lost in thought, while Pete continued humming a song, the content of which had shifted from boasting about the glorious deeds of the Irish to becoming more profound.
"The first watch of the night, the moon hazy, leaving my homeland to cross into a foreign land..."
"Mr. Pete! Could you please stop singing?" Wang Bingbing finally couldn't help but speak up, but the moment she turned her head, she suddenly realized what was happening, and the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end!
At the same time, almost instantly, Li Ang had already taken out the Holy Judgment from his arms and shielded Nia behind him!
"That's...a folk song from Fujian." Wang Bingbing turned her head tremblingly to look at Li Ang, not even daring to move her feet.
"And Pete doesn't speak Chinese at all."
Li Ang frowned, a bead of cold sweat sliding down his forehead, and added to Wang Bingbing's statement.
Nia clung tightly to Li Ang's suit jacket, her shoulders trembling.
At that moment, Li Ang desperately hoped it was a prank by Pete, and stood there with his hands on his hips, saying, "Haha, who said I don't speak Chinese?"
However, the reality is...
Pete is missing.
"The pickaxe is heavy, the mountain road is long, and white bones pave the way for sleep in a foreign land..."
"The night is cold, the river is shrouded in mist, and the road home for my soul is long and uncertain..."
"The boss is ruthless, there are no wages, and when I fall ill, I'm left to feed wolves in the wilderness..."
"I can't see my mother back home, her tears fall onto my iron pillow and turn to frost..."
The melodious singing didn't stop; it still sounded like Pete's voice.
The fog is getting thicker.
