I'm not a Witcher anymore.
Chapter 63 Old Acquaintances
The next morning, sunlight streamed into the room through the gaps in the curtains, casting a warm glow on the bed and floor.
Sieg woke up once.
The clock on the wall points to six o'clock.
Normally, he would have gotten up by now and gone to find an open space outside the town to practice his sword and bow.
But I got back too late last night, and this trip from Hemu Village to the border town was really exhausting.
Zig lay still, listened to the intermittent birdsong outside the window for a moment, and then closed his eyes.
Since coming into this world, he has long since given up his habit of staying up late and procrastinating, which he had in his previous life.
Going to bed early and waking up early has become more natural for him than anything else. But even the most stable person needs a break sometime.
When I woke up again, it was already noon.
Sunlight streamed directly through the window, and the aroma of food wafted up from downstairs.
Zig sat up in bed and stretched his shoulders and back; the fatigue that had accumulated in his body had finally dissipated.
He went downstairs to have a meal before leaving the hotel.
The midday sun was so intense it made your eyes burn.
The stone pavement was bathed in sunlight, and the heat rose in layers. There were far fewer pedestrians on the street than in the morning or evening, as most of them sought refuge in the shade. Occasionally, a few people who had to come out to run errands would walk quickly with their heads down, thinking only of getting back as soon as possible.
Zig stood at the door for a while, shading his eyes with his hand to block the glaring sunlight.
There was still a whole afternoon before he was supposed to meet his squad at the tavern that evening. He thought for a moment, then turned and walked towards the weapons shop.
The previous battles had used up a lot of his arrows, so he might as well take this opportunity to replenish them.
A young voice came from inside when the door of the weapons shop was pushed open.
Welcome!
Zig paused.
The voice sounds familiar.
He looked in the direction of the sound and met a pair of equally astonished eyes.
"Mr... Mr. Zieg?"
The young man behind the counter stared wide-eyed, nearly dropping the rag he was using to wipe the counter.
Zieg was also surprised.
"Kevin?"
He looked at the other person, raising an eyebrow slightly.
"What are you doing here?"
He certainly remembered the face in front of him.
Kevin was his first teammate when he first came to this world. Later, after a trip into a goblin lair, the blood and gore shattered that naivety.
After that, Kevin and his childhood sweetheart stopped being adventurers, saying they were going to go back to the Tumbleweed Farm.
But now, he's standing behind the counter in the weapons shop.
Kevin clearly understood what Zieg was thinking. The surprise on his face quickly faded, replaced by a slightly bitter smile. Just as he was about to speak, footsteps came from the back door.
"Kevin, have we had guests?"
Joel, the owner of the weapons shop, lifted the curtain and came out.
As soon as he saw Zieg, a smile immediately spread across his face.
"Oh my, isn't this Mr. Sieg? It's been a long time!"
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Zieg explained his purpose.
"Arrows? No problem." Joel nodded as he walked toward the counter.
"By the way, Mr. Sieg, I just acquired a batch of armor-piercing heavy arrows. They're all in good condition. If you're interested, I'll only add a little money and sell them to you. It comes out to about 80% of the price in Water Seven."
Zieg glanced at him.
"Bought at a low price?"
"Yes." Joel sighed as he said this, "You don't know, something big has happened in Water Seven recently."
Zig's heart skipped a beat.
Last night at the hotel, he had already heard some rumors from the two merchants, so when Joel brought it up again, he picked up on the topic.
"Is it still a murder case?"
"That's it." Joel rubbed his hands together, his expression becoming more serious.
"Originally, many traveling merchants were going to take their goods to Water Seven to sell, but now that things have turned out like this, who would dare to venture in? A lot of goods are stuck halfway there. Those who can resell them are reselling them, and those who can sell them at a discount are selling them at a discount. This batch of armor-piercing heavy arrows came about in this way. That person would rather take a loss than go to Water Seven again."
Zieg nodded, his face showing little sign of surprise, but his mind was racing.
Others might just see this as a bizarre serial murder case, but he knew the inside story.
The so-called killer was not some elusive assassin at all, but actually a group of goblins driven by cultists.
Those people used a magical item called the "Mirror of Teleportation" to continuously send goblins into the underground sewers of the Water City.
Those who lead them are no ordinary creatures, but a higher-level variant even more troublesome than shamans and goblins—goblin heroes.
With someone like that around, this group of people is no longer a chaotic bunch of scum.
They can lie in wait, they can divide the work, they can choose to strike when it is late at night, and they also know how to avoid the guards' searches.
The guards of the Water City usually deal mostly with thieves, drunkards, and street disputes.
If you were to encounter such a monster that hides underground and bites people at night, it wouldn't be surprising if you were completely outmaneuvered.
"I see." Sieg snapped out of his thoughts. "Then I'll take them all."
Joel was grinning from ear to ear.
"Okay, okay, I'll wrap it up for you right away."
……
Zig had just come out of the weapon shop and hadn't gone far when he heard a series of hurried footsteps behind him.
"Mr. Sieg! Mr. Sieg, please wait a moment!"
He stopped and looked back.
Kevin jogged over from the street corner, still a little out of breath when he got close, as if afraid that if he slowed down even a step, he would be far behind.
"What's up?"
Kevin wiped the sweat from his forehead, looking somewhat flustered.
"If you're not busy right now... could I buy you a drink? I'd like to talk to you."
Zieg nodded.
"OK."
The two randomly chose a tavern.
It wasn't the busiest time yet; only a few tables were scattered around the restaurant.
Most of them were elderly townspeople, sitting in a corner with their beer in their hands, chatting idly.
There weren't many people in the room, which made it unusually quiet.
Zig and Kevin sat down by the window.
Kevin ordered two glasses of the most basic ale. After the drinks were served, he took a few sips, his initial nervousness gradually easing, and his ears turning slightly red.
He held his wine glass, remained silent for a while, and finally spoke.
"Mr. Sieg, you must be wondering why I'm in Joel's weapons shop, right?"
Zieg picked up his glass and took a sip.
"It's okay if you don't want to talk about it."
Kevin shook his head, his expression somewhat bitter.
"Actually, there's nothing that can't be said."
"After we parted ways that day, Eileen and I went back to the Tumbleweed Farm together. That was really our plan, to just go back and settle down, farm, work, and live a peaceful life from now on."
His lips twitched, as if even he found his words somewhat amusing.
"We did try. We took hoes, went into the fields, turned the soil, watered them, we did it all."
Kevin put down the cup and rubbed his face.
"There's nothing wrong with the farm. Really. But Eileen and I both grew up there. When we were kids, we always thought that when we saved enough money or became capable, we would leave there, come to town, and go see more distant places."
"Once we got back, we realized we couldn't stand staying there at all."
"Even a small town has a market, an adventurers' guild, a tavern, shops, and people coming and going. The farm, on the other hand, is all land, and after you finish today's work, tomorrow will be the same. If we really had to live there for the rest of our lives... we couldn't stand it."
Zieg put the glass back on the table.
"So you're back again."
Kevin was taken aback, then scratched his head somewhat embarrassedly.
"Yes. He came back after all."
After saying that, he seemed to finally relax a bit, and his shoulders slumped down.
Zieg looked at him.
"And what about your childhood sweetheart?"
Kevin's expression brightened considerably at the mention of this.
"She lives in town too," he couldn't help but laugh. "She works at the tailor shop on the main street."
"I used to think that all she was good at was fighting, nothing else. When we were kids on the farm, almost every boy got a beating from her."
"Who knew that after she joined the tailor shop, she learned needlework exceptionally quickly. The shop owner likes her very much now, always saying that she is skillful and has a keen eye, and can learn many things very quickly after being taught."
"Now she can do some simple orders on her own. She doesn't earn a lot, but it's enough for us to get by in town."
After listening, Zieg raised his glass and gestured to him.
"Then live well."
"Being able to change my identity and settle down in town isn't such a bad thing."
Kevin quickly raised his glass and gently clinked it with his.
"Yes." He nodded earnestly. "Thank you."
After saying this, he tilted his head back and drank the wine in his glass in one gulp, a smile still on his face.
It's a pity I couldn't become an adventurer.
But in this small town, having a job that provides a living and someone willing to share life with isn't necessarily worse than other lives.
Plain and uneventful, peaceful and stable.
That's enough.
