Chapter 75 The Eye Demon
Over the next two days, the team didn't rush into the underground sewers, but instead replenished the supplies they had used up along the way.
Arrows, kerosene, medicine, lighting equipment, and even ropes and masks were all replaced with new ones.
Once everyone's injuries and strength had recovered, they set off again and returned to the underground.
The underground sewers are still the same. It's just that this place is much quieter than it was a few days ago.
Although they encountered a few more groups of goblin remnants on the way, their numbers were small and their courage had long been shattered. When they saw the group, they no longer looked like berserker orcs, but instead tucked their tails between their legs and ran away.
The group continued deeper into the area, and two hours later, they returned to the border heroes' cemetery.
The goblin corpses left behind earlier are still piled up in the same spot.
The corpse was rotten beyond recognition, emitting a stench that Lucy instinctively turned her face away.
Lucy and Hill stood a little further away, while Sieg and the other two dragged the corpses to one place and piled them up.
Once everything was gathered, Sieg took out some oil and poured it on the fire. The three of them retreated to an upwind position, where Ravenna nocked an arrow and started a fire.
A fire broke out.
The pile of corpses crackled in the firelight, and thick smoke, carrying a burnt stench, rose upwards, making the already stifling air deep in the cemetery even more oppressive.
The group stood by and watched in silence until the pile of rotting corpses was burned down to ashes and charred bones, before continuing their journey deeper into the cemetery.
……
"Stop! There's noise ahead."
When they reached a tomb chamber, Ravenna suddenly raised her hand to signal. She first pressed herself against the stone wall on one side, turned her ear to the side, and her expression tightened immediately.
Valeria whispered, "Get ready."
The group quickly dispersed and took their places.
Sieg and Ravenna stood on either side of the tomb door. Valeria made sure they were both ready before stepping forward and kicking the door.
With a bang, the stone door was kicked open.
The goblin behind the door had no idea someone would break in at this moment; it had barely turned its head when the arrow arrived.
Zieg and Ravenna released their bows almost simultaneously, and arrows flew in one after another, instantly killing many people in the tomb.
The remaining few screamed and rushed out, but before they could even get out of the door, Valeria intercepted them and swiftly cut them all down.
The battle lasted less than half a minute from start to finish.
The road ahead is pretty much the same.
As the group cleared their way through, the remaining goblins huddled in the tomb were terrified by the death of the goblin hero. They either huddled in corners trembling or collapsed at the slightest touch.
They continued clearing until they reached the very end of the cemetery before finally stopping in front of the last tomb chamber.
This tomb chamber has no door.
Standing outside, you can see clearly inside.
A monster was floating in mid-air inside the tomb.
It looked like an eyeball magnified countless times, bulging and floating there, with more than a dozen thick tentacles trailing behind it. Each tentacle had a small eyeball at its end, and those eyes rotated in different directions, making one's scalp tingle.
The walls, sarcophagus, and floor of the tomb were covered with charred marks left by burning, as if they had been repeatedly swept by some kind of high-temperature rays. Even the stone surface was left with twisted and cracked marks.
As soon as everyone stopped, the main eye of the Eye Demon slowly turned around.
Zieg glanced at it, and without much thought, waved for everyone to step back.
The group retreated to the outside of the tomb passage in one go, and only stopped when they confirmed that the thing had not chased them out of the tomb chamber.
Ravenna frowned, her gaze still fixed on that spot.
"What the hell is that? It looks completely different from the goblins we saw before. If we charge in, we'll probably all die."
Valeria nodded.
"We can't force it."
Lucy's face also turned a little pale.
"What should we do then?"
Zieg did not answer, as if he was waiting for something.
Just then, a heavy crawling sound suddenly came from the waterway next to them, followed by the sound of clear water being splashed.
Everyone turned to look, and saw a huge crocodile swimming rapidly towards them from the darkness. Its tail swept away the sewage, and after reaching the shore, it crawled along the ground straight towards the tomb chamber with astonishing speed, as if it already knew what had happened.
Ravenna instinctively raised her bow.
"Wait." Lucy placed her hand on Ravenna's shortbow.
She stared into the crocodile's eyes, a hint of surprise in her voice.
"It has a holy mark in its eyes."
Only then did everyone see clearly that deep within the crocodile's eyes was indeed a very faint layer of holy white light, and the mark appearing at the edge of its pupil was almost identical to the emblem of the Supreme Temple.
Zieg immediately realized what was happening.
"This is... the familiar of the Sword Saintess?"
The crocodile ignored them completely, not even stopping, and crawled past them, heading straight into the tomb.
Valeria Adam immediately dismissed the crowd and took a few steps back herself.
"Everyone, step back and don't get in its way."
The moment the crocodile stepped into the tomb, the eye demon in mid-air reacted instantly.
The enormous main eye suddenly turned and locked onto it.
More than a dozen tentacles also rose up at the same time, and the small eyeballs at their ends all turned in the same direction.
The next moment, a scorching ray burst forth, striking a stone coffin directly in front of the crocodile.
The stone coffin exploded with a loud bang.
Gravel and stone dust were thrown outwards, and a blinding light burst forth from the tomb chamber.
But the crocodile kept getting closer by using the door frame, pillars, and the scattered remains of the stone coffin.
The Eye Demon clearly didn't want it to get close. Its main eye spun rapidly, unleashing beam after beam of light that shattered the stone walls, the ground, and the half-destroyed sarcophagus, leaving behind numerous charred cracks in the tomb chamber in the blink of an eye.
One of the rays of light finally grazed the crocodile's shoulder and back.
The charred marks spread rapidly, and the air was filled with the smell of burning flesh. But the thing only sank slightly before continuing to press forward despite the burning pain.
Its scales and flesh on its back seemed to be protected by some force; although they were charred black, they were not pierced on the spot.
The Eye Demon was clearly panicked now.
The main eye spun faster and faster, its dozen tentacles tumbling in mid-air, the light sweeping more and more rapidly and erratically, as if trying to pin the demon down halfway before it could truly close in. But the tomb chamber was only so big, and the stone coffin, pillars, and corners were all there. The crocodile used these obstructions to sneak in, and the eye demon's most comfortable distance was gradually being devoured.
The next moment, the crocodile exerted its strength and its entire body crashed into the center of the tomb, directly pouncing on the Eye Demon.
It opened its mouth and bit down hard on one of the tentacles. With a flick of its head, the thick tentacle snapped off with a snap, and juices and bits of flesh were scattered all over the ground.
The beholder's massive body trembled violently, and the remaining tentacles frantically coiled around it, trying to force the monster that had charged at it back. But the crocodile wouldn't back down. After biting off one tentacle, it bit off the second and the third, tearing and shaking its head several times, forcefully ripping the tentacles to shreds one after another.
Without the tentacles to restrain it, the Eye Demon was completely thrown into disarray.
The crocodile then thrust forward again, slamming its body into the corner of the tomb and into the pile of stone coffins deep within the chamber.
With a muffled boom, rubble, the coffin lid, and broken stone fragments shattered together. The Eye Demon was forced into that narrow corner, its tentacles flailing wildly, and its main eye began blindly blasting beams of light.
But by this time, it was too close to the crocodile to lock onto its target as steadily as before. The out-of-control beams of light kept striking the walls, pillars, and ceiling, cracking the entire tomb chamber, causing stones to fall down, and making the whole space seem to tremble.
The crowd retreated outside the tomb passage, only able to see flickering flames, flying rubble, and layers of smoke billowing out of the tomb chamber.
A few seconds later, a particularly shrill scream suddenly came from inside.
Immediately afterwards, there was another heavy thud.
Then, everything quieted down.
The group stood outside, none of them daring to go in. Only when the smoke and dust gradually dissipated did they finally see the situation deep inside the tomb.
The crocodile lay in the middle of the ruins, its jaws clamped tightly around the Eye Demon's main eye.
The bulging body of the Eye Demon had completely deflated, its tattered tentacles scattered around, and it was no longer moving.
The crocodile slowly opened its mouth, looked up at the crowd, and the holy mark in its eyes was still faintly glowing.
The Eye Demon is dead.
