Chapter 78 Surprise Attack
The Goblin King's smile vanished completely.
With a wave of its hand, it released the wolf riders who were hiding to its side and rear.
The goblins riding giant wolves screamed and circled around to the flanks, baring their teeth and claws as they pounced on the other side of the farm, clearly hoping to break through the stalemate from the front and overturn the adventurers' line from the side in one fell swoop.
However, as they approached the side of the farm, something that had been lying in ambush in the grass suddenly turned upside down—it wasn't a stone or a plank, but a row of thick wooden stakes that had been buried long ago.
The giant wolf running in front didn't have time to stop and crashed into it hard, howling as it rolled away.
The wolf riders behind couldn't stop in time. Before the front rank could even get up, the back rank had already crashed into them, along with the wolves. Screams, howls, and rolling sounds all mingled together.
The Goblin King stared intently ahead, his eyes bloodshot.
They even planted stakes on the flanks; these adventurers actually knew that wolf riders would attack from the flanks.
They couldn't break through head-on, nor could they create an opening from the side; even the shaman hiding among the monsters wasn't spared.
The spellcasters wielding bone staffs had barely begun to chant their incantations when arrows and spells rained down with pinpoint accuracy. Before they could even utter a complete verse, several more corpses lay sprawled in the mud.
Its henchmen continued to push forward, but the more they pushed, the faster they died.
The mud outside the farm was soaked in blood, with corpses piled on top of each other, making it sticky to walk on.
The smell of blood and mud mingled together, and the night wind couldn't disperse it at all.
The Goblin King finally decided he couldn't wait any longer.
It suddenly turned around and let out a sharp, piercing howl.
As soon as the roar subsided, more than a dozen giant goblins, much larger than ordinary goblins, immediately stood up.
They carried iron hammers and giant axes, and marched forward with low growls.
Behind them, a figure even stronger and fiercer than the Big Goblin slowly raised its head.
The thing's chest heaved, hot air constantly billowed from its nostrils, and it held a long-handled weapon in its hand, the firelight falling on it and casting a cold, eerie glow.
The Goblin King's eyes flashed with ferocity once more.
If the grunt army can't break through, then use stronger ones to smash through.
Tonight, it will definitely crush those adventurers in front of it completely.
……
The night should have been so quiet that only the wind could be heard, but the area outside the farm was already filled with shouts of battle.
Flames flickered in the darkness, illuminating half the forest with a flickering light.
The Goblin King had already sent his army of miscellaneous soldiers, wolf riders, and a large goblin assault team led by one of the goblin heroes forward. The main camp at the edge of the forest was instantly emptied of most of its troops.
Sieg and his five companions remained hidden in the shadows, the invisibility spell cast on them by the silver-level spellcaster still in effect, and none of them made a move.
They arrived long ago.
From the moment the goblin army reached the woods outside the farm, they had been hiding here, watching the goblin king send his troops forward layer by layer.
First came the grunts, then the wolf riders, and finally the goblin assault team specifically designed to forcefully break through the enemy lines.
They remained silent, only using the gaps in the shadows of the trees and the firelight to keep an eye on the commotion.
Only when the goblin assault team led by the goblin hero also headed towards the farm did Sieg slowly withdraw his gaze and whisper:
"That's about it."
However, even though the troops were withdrawn layer by layer, the Goblin King was not left without a single guard.
The monster carrying a heavy giant axe stood behind a slightly higher earthen slope at the edge of the forest, surrounded by four guards.
The one at the very front was exceptionally tall and strong, with shoulders and back as thick as a wall. He held a giant spear and stood firmly in front of the Goblin King.
That wasn't an ordinary goblin, but another goblin hero, clearly the last strong barrier left by the king.
To its left stood an equally robust goblin guard, always positioned at an angle, as if guarding against an attack from the side.
Behind them, a large goblin held a horn, responsible for relaying orders.
The last one held a large bow, its eyes constantly scanning its surroundings, intently watching for any movement in the woods and darkness.
Valeria hid behind a tree, peering over there for a while under the cover of the branches and leaves, then lowered her voice.
"Kill the horn blower first, we can't let it call the goblins back from the battlefield."
"Zig, Ravenna, you two work together and make sure to kill him with one arrow."
As she said this, her gaze turned to Hill.
"You control that big goblin with the great bow, and you absolutely cannot let it shoot an arrow."
Hill nodded and gripped the staff.
Valeria then looked at the strongest figure.
"Leave that goblin hero to me. I'll keep it occupied and prevent it from touching you."
She spoke to Lucy last.
"Don't move, just stay here. Cast a miracle only if needed."
Although Lucy's face was a little pale, she nodded seriously.
Sieg's gaze remained fixed on the Goblin King.
The monster, gripping a heavy giant axe, stood in the center of the formation, its hideous face flickering in and out of the flickering firelight.
It clearly understood that it was the true center of this night battle, so it always placed itself in the safest position, with four large goblins guarding it, and its retreat route was still deeper in the forest.
The signal to take action came very quickly.
Zieg and Ravenna released the string almost simultaneously.
Two cold glints flashed across the night sky.
Before the goblin could even raise its horn to its mouth, the first arrow pierced its eye socket, and the second arrow followed immediately through its neck.
Its entire body suddenly froze, and the horn flew out of its hand.
As soon as the big goblin fell, the goblins behind it also lost their footing.
Before they could even regain their footing, Hill's spell had already landed.
The ground suddenly exploded open with several cracks, and thick vines shot out from the mud, coiling like snakes around the big goblin holding a large bow.
The thing reacted quickly and immediately tried to break free, but the vines were extremely tight, first locking its ankles and then twisting upwards along its calves, pinning it to the spot.
The invisibility spell was also dispelled at that moment.
Several figures suddenly appeared at the edge of the previously deserted woodland, as if they had burst out of the night.
The Goblin King reacted faster than any of his guards.
It showed no intention of fighting at all, and immediately retreated, letting out a sharp scream, trying to call back the troops in front, while its other hand tried to grab the horn that had fallen to the ground.
It had just bent down when a dark shadow darted out of the bushes beside it.
The venomous vines, which had been lying in wait for a long time, wrapped around the horn, turned around and rolled away, moving as fast as a black shadow darting along the ground.
The Goblin King grabbed at empty air and let out a furious roar.
In that fleeting moment, Valeria had already run headfirst into the strongest goblin hero.
The monster roared and slammed its giant spear down on its head.
Valeria stepped aside, letting the heavy weapon crash down with a fierce gust of wind, sending earth and rocks flying.
Before the monster could even draw its weapon, Valeria had already taken the initiative.
She stepped onto the shaft of the giant spear, which was deeply embedded in the mud, and used the momentum to leap up, slamming her kite-shaped shield into the goblin hero's face.
