Legendary Captain

Chapter 35 is not just a pretty face.

"What if... I said no?" Xu Xian suddenly winked mischievously.

It's clear that Lian Shanxue has worked hard and isn't just here to "experience life." However, at this stage, she's a bit insecure, so she subconsciously seeks Xu Xian's approval before taking any step.

"Isn't that right?" Lian Shanxue's small face froze for a moment, her eyebrows furrowing as she tried hard to recall the steps on the SOP: "It shouldn't be like this! Switching the IRS mode selector from the off position to the navigation position is full calibration. The IRS will perform a brief power test, during which the DC-connected light will illuminate. After the test is complete, the DC-connected light will turn off and the calibration light will illuminate, and the IRS will begin calibration. There's no problem, shouldn't this be the procedure?"

Xu Xianzheng was quite impressed with Lian Shanxue. Many students who entered the initial modification stage might know the operation steps of full calibration, but that was all they knew. They had no idea about the calibration principles. They probably didn't know why the DC light would turn on first and then turn off. Nine out of ten students probably didn't know that.

Regardless of how well Lian Shanxue learned, her attitude alone deserves Xu Xian's thumbs up.

"You've explained everything in such detail, so why are you still asking me?" Xu Xian laughed. "Just do what you have in mind for the cockpit, don't worry about me! If there are any mistakes, I'll tell you."

"Oh..." Lian Shanxue responded somewhat aggrievedly, thinking that Xu Xian thought she lacked confidence, always asking others for advice first. Suddenly, she realized something was amiss: "No! You're just flattering me!"

"Huh?" Xu Xian's face lit up.

Xu Xian had assumed that the highly colloquial word "哄" (hǒng) was only used more in the eastern regions, and that it was somewhat similar to "哄" (hǒng), though mostly not a derogatory term. Especially when used between men and women, it carried a certain charm.

Could it be that Lianshan Snow is near my hometown?

Just as the atmosphere in the simulator cabin was starting to turn a little pink, a slightly deliberate cough broke the idyllic mood.

"The old man's still here!" The instructor, presumably having set the parameters, asked Xu Xian, "Does Star Travel have international routes to high-latitude regions?"

Xu Xian's mind worked very quickly, and he immediately saw through the core of the instructor's question: "Instructor, are you referring to high-latitude regions above 78.15 degrees?"

"Wow, he remembers it so precisely?" The instructor was startled. Xu Xian even remembered two decimal places so clearly. Are all the students nowadays theoretical geniuses?

Instructor: "It's roughly this latitude, I guess. I'm getting old, how could I remember it so clearly!"

78.15 degrees north latitude and 78.15 degrees south latitude are critical values. Beyond these latitudes, the inertial reference of atmospheric data cannot be properly calibrated.

"Regarding this flight route... Instructor, I haven't joined the squadron yet, so I don't really know much," Xu Xian said with a wry smile.

Despite all this effort, the disembarking team has yet to fly a single actual flight. Xu Xian's only source of information about the company comes from his friends who have already disembarked.

And those trainees are just followers, what could they possibly know?

At this point, Lian Shanxue had a say: "Teacher, our company's international routes mainly fly to Southeast Asia, Japan and South Korea, and there's also a European route to Frankfurt. We don't currently have any high-latitude routes. And in the near future, there are probably no plans to develop routes to high-latitude regions."

Why does Lian Shanxue know so much? Because she has taken many promotional photos for airline routes and has a good understanding of Xingyou Airlines' route planning.

"I see!" the instructor said with some regret. "Everyone says that calibration is impossible in high-latitude regions, but I haven't personally witnessed how calibration is impossible. Never mind, never mind, you can continue with the cockpit preparations. Once it's done, let me know, and I'll give you the manifest and clearance."

It turned out that the teacher was just curious; Xu Xian thought it was something serious!

After confirming that there were no problems, Lian Shanxue continued preparing the cockpit.

It must be said that although Lianshanxue is not fast, its accuracy is very high.

After calibration, the oxygen pressure, hydraulic fluid level, and lubricating oil level needed to be verified. Lian Shanxue explained each limit in great detail while verifying them. She even memorized all seventeen airborne documents. Xu Xian sometimes missed one or two of these.

It seems that Lian Shanxue has indeed put in a lot of effort and doesn't want to be just a pretty face.

Lian Shanxue had a solid foundation, so explaining things to her was much easier and more enjoyable. Xu Xian didn't need to put in the effort to explain the very basic things; instead, he could focus on some more advanced concepts.

For example, when should the central fuel pump be turned on? For example, when the APU is running, the left pump of the central fuel pump can be turned on to prevent an imbalance of fuel on both sides.

Lian Shanxue's learning ability is very fast; she even knows some of the extended content. For things she doesn't yet understand or feels are important, Lian Shanxue tends to write them down. Since we're on a simulator, there's a time limit, so discussing these things can wait until later, during her free time.

Furthermore, practice sessions should not be conducted on simulators, but rather students should practice on the control panel on their own outside of class.

However, Xu Xian felt that practicing programming on a simulator was much more effective than practicing on a completely unrealistic control panel. Moreover, Lian Shanxue had put in a lot of hard work, and the instructor was quite satisfied with the program after it had only been run once.

The instructor said that it was acceptable for students like Lian Shanxue to go through the process, because it was not a waste of time. She had already laid a solid foundation after class, and the simulator was just to reinforce her memory.

However, some students don't study outside of class but instead study on the simulator. The results are naturally vastly different. If Lian Shanxue had that kind of attitude, the instructor would have interrupted her long ago and told her to go back and solidify her foundation first.

Ultimately, it was Lian Shanxue's own hard work that made it possible!

Lian Shanxue doesn't have any major problems with the program itself, but she's not very familiar with some things that require flexibility. For example, the settings for cruising altitude and landing altitude, the flight path, initial heading, navigation frequency, and CDU input.

CDU (Computer-Assisted Driving) is a difficult hurdle for every student initially, because there are few training methods available. The older CDU software is vastly different from the current version, making practice ineffective. Furthermore, the autopilot system involved in CDU is inherently a relatively complex system within aircraft systems, and theoretical explanations alone are insufficient. Significant progress can only be achieved through practical operation.

Xu Xian wasn't too concerned about this. Once Lian Shanxue started following him, as long as she maintained her current learning attitude, these kinds of problems could be quickly overcome, so there was no need to worry too much.
