Legendary Captain

Chapter 34 A Girl Who Loves to Study!

Xu Xian sighed deeply, his voice filled with bitter sorrow. He suddenly looked up and stared directly at Lian Shanxue: "Can we discuss something?"

"Okay, go ahead!"

Xu Xian managed his expression, trying to put on a sincere one: "Can I take it back?"

Even Shan Xue smiled broadly, revealing a set of fine, white teeth: "A man who breaks his word is no good man!"

"You..." Xu Xian was speechless with anger: "You... what don't you understand? Hurry up!"

Lian Shanxue glanced at her notebook. Sure enough, before Xu Xian's lecture, Lian Shanxue had pulled out a tiny notebook, no bigger than the palm of her hand, and was taking notes while listening to Xu Xian's lecture.

"You just mentioned checking if the ground power supply light is on or off. Does it only have one color? I see its casing is the same as the fuel transfer valve light; it's blue," Lian Shanxue asked.

Xu Xian was quite surprised; he hadn't expected Lian Shanxue to have her own thoughts. Although Lian Shanxue's words were somewhat disorganized, Xu Xian already understood what she wanted to ask.

The indicator lights on the 737's panel can light up in amber, red, and blue colors.

However, there are distinctions among these blue indicator lights. For example, as Lian Shanxue mentioned, the fuel transfer valve light has two different display modes: bright blue and dark blue. These two types of blue indicate completely different meanings and should not be confused.

If the fuel transfer valve light is bright blue, it indicates that the transfer valve position is in the process of switching, or that the valve position is inconsistent with the transfer selector position.

If the fuel transfer valve light is a dim blue, it means the transfer valve is open.

Pilots must distinguish between when a bright blue should be used and when a dark blue should be used.

For example, after opening the fuel transfer valve, the correct way for the fuel transfer valve light to illuminate should be that it is first a bright blue, and then after a few seconds, it turns into a dim blue.

If the indicator light remains a bright blue, it is very likely that there is a problem with the transfer valve.

Lian Shanxue asked this question because she had incorporated her own thoughts. If a terrestrial power source illuminates a blue light, are there different levels of brightness (bright and dim)? If so, what do they represent? Under what circumstances does it indicate that the terrestrial power source quality meets the requirements?

At least Lian Shanxue didn't mechanically accept Xu Xian's indoctrination, but rather incorporated her own ideas, which is a truly effective way of learning.

"The only color of the available ground power light is blue, which is different from the fuel transfer valve light and the anti-icing indicator light," Xu Xian explained.

The anti-icing indicator light that Xu Xian mentioned is the same as the fuel transfer valve light; both are blue and have varying brightness levels.

"Oh, I see!" Lian Shanxue quickly jotted down a sentence in her notebook, then asked, "How do I tell if the ground power is connected?"

"You can check the AC meter panel!" Xu Xian tapped the electrical area on the front panel. "There's a ground power option on the AC meter panel selector. Turn the knob to ground power; if it displays the correct voltage and frequency, then it's connected. What are the standard voltage and frequency for 737 AC again?"

Xu Xian couldn't remember for a moment.

"115 volts, 400 Hz!" Lian Shanxue actually answered the question for Xu Xian.

"Yes, yes! Why did it get stuck?" Xu Xian said, quickly going through the power-on procedure. When the ground power light came on, he directly connected to the ground power supply. Then, following what he had just said, he adjusted the AC meter panel selector to the ground power position, and sure enough, the words 115 volts and 400 Hz were displayed on the ground display.

"Besides this method, if the ground power is connected, then the power off indicator, the busbar off indicator, and the backup power off indicator should all be off. If any of them are on, you need to check for problems," Xu Xian said.

Lian Shanxue quickly wrote down what Xu Xian said, her head covered. Seeing that Lian Shanxue had almost finished writing, Xu Xian asked, "Is there anything else?"

"Hmm... why is the ground power supply switch a three-position switch, and why does the spring keep the switch in the neutral position?" Lian Shanxue was really in her style of asking questions until she got to the bottom of things. She asked so many questions about just the ground power supply. What will she do about the more complex systems in the future?

Xu Xian's face darkened, and he refused to answer the question.

"Why aren't you saying anything?" Lian Shanxue muttered.

"I don't know!" Xu Xian said irritably, "Why are there so many 'whys'? Why are you called Lian Shan Xue? Why am I called Xu Xian? Or I'll buy you a hundred thousand 'whys' later!"

Some of Lianshanxue's questions are quite worth discussing, while others are simply infuriating.

"Okay, okay, I won't ask anymore! Don't be angry!" Lian Shanxue lowered her head, looking a little aggrieved, like a child who had done something wrong.

Xu Xian felt a pang of pity and adjusted his tone, speaking in as calm a voice as possible, "If you want to use the APU power supply, you need to start the APU. Before starting the APU, you need to perform a fire alarm test. You know what a fire alarm test is, right?"

"I know, I know!" Lian Shanxue nodded like a chick pecking at rice, very obedient and cute.

"Alright, alright! Whether it's the ground power supply or the APU power supply, as long as it's connected, the power-on procedure is complete. After that, it's just the initial pre-flight checks." Xu Xian's mouth was dry as he spoke, and he was feeling quite uncomfortable since he couldn't bring drinks into the simulator.

"Do I need to go through the pre-flight checks with you?" Xu Xian asked. "No, you should be doing it, and I should be checking it for you! You do it!"

Xu Xian let Lian Shanxue do the initial pre-flight checks herself so that he could rest for a while.

Lian Shanxue was quite obedient; she had long wanted to do a cockpit preparation in the simulator.

"First, the inertial navigation calibration..." After all, this was Lian Shanxue's first time preparing in a relatively realistic simulator, and the feeling was quite different from programming on the control panel. Therefore, she had to mutter it to herself every time she performed a movement.

Lian Shanxue carefully switched the IRS mode selector from the off position to the navigation position. Perhaps because it was the first time she had touched this knob, she was a little nervous and did not notice that the tip of her tongue was sticking out in a cute little way. Coupled with her serious expression, she looked very adorable.

After switching the mode selector, Lian Shanxue didn't take any further action, but instead looked at Xu Xian with hopeful eyes.

Xu Xian smiled knowingly: "That's right!"

After receiving Xu Xian's confirmation, Lian Shanxue's eyes curved into crescent moons again. Pointing to the DC power-on indicator on the calibration panel, she said, "It should light up first, but it went out!"

Pointing to another calibration light, he said, "This one should be on... right?"

Those clear, star-like eyes were fixed on Xu Xian again!
