"Berto? What are you doing here?" Norn asked.

Berthold held up the bucket of fish in his hand. "Fishing, huh? Ever since I was dismissed, I've had so much free time that I've developed a habit of night fishing."

Norn cautiously surveyed his surroundings, fearing that the cat-man might have brought soldiers with him.

Seeing that Norn remained silent, Berto looked past him and onto the massive gray-black figure behind him.

Arno stood behind Norn, his pale eyes fiercely scrutinizing Berto. If Norn hadn't mentally restrained him, Arno probably would have pounced on him already.

"Lord Norn, who is this person behind you...?"

"My new pet," Norn casually made up an explanation.

Berto nodded, clearly not quite believing it.

"It's so late, why are you still outside the city? Aren't you planning to go back inside?" Berto asked, changing the subject.

"Go back? How can I go back? They're probably after me in the city right now, aren't they?"

Berto was taken aback, a confused expression appearing on his face. "Arrest you? Why would they arrest you? You're a big shot in Miguang City now, and the chieftain's benefactor. A bunch of people are trying to curry favor with you, why would they arrest you?"

Norn stared into Berto's eyes, trying to find a trace of deception.

"Didn't that French Emperor order Mussolov to arrest me?"

Upon hearing this, Berto smiled. "Of course he called out, saying you are a dark magician and instructing Lord Musolo to capture you with all his might."

"But saying and doing are two different things. Do you see even one church in Miguang City? How many chieftains of the Demi-Human Federation are willing to listen to the teachings of Yaro?"

"Besides, you are so popular now, and you are Lord Musolo's benefactor. How could he possibly betray his benefactor? The old man said he had an emergency and left in the afternoon."

After listening, Norn remained silent for a long time.

Did Dante really leave? Did he really entrust the task of capturing him to these demi-humans?

At that moment, Berto noticed a pale hand sticking out from Norn's arms. "Why is there a hand in your arms?"

Upon hearing this, Norn pulled out his severed arm and showed the tree mark on it to Berto.

"This is my hand. That old man chopped it off, but thankfully the marks on it are intact."

Upon hearing this, Berto immediately understood Norn's meaning and asked, "Are you leaving?"

Norn nodded. "I'm still not entirely at ease. I can no longer stay in Miguang City, and my continued presence here would likely cause the chief a lot of trouble."

"Then you should definitely go into town," Berto said quickly. "The savings bank has a rule that if a person comes to withdraw money with a severed limb, they cannot withdraw the money successfully! You should go back to town and have them make a new mark."

Norn suddenly realized that this made perfect sense.

If one can withdraw money using wreckage, wouldn't depositors be like wanted criminals being hunted down?

Thinking of this, Norn handed his arm to Arno behind him, and Arno ate it in two bites.

"Alright, can you take me into the city?" Norn looked at the full moon overhead and figured that curfew must have already been imposed.

Berto smiled, revealing two canine teeth. "Of course, no problem! Although there's a curfew now, don't worry. With my position as captain of the vanguard, the guards patrolling the streets will just turn a blind eye even if they see me."

"But since you're leaving, how about I treat you to a drink tonight? I know a really good bar, as a way of thanking you for saving Mira back then."

Norn shook his head. "No, I don't really want to stay outside any longer."

"Okay, please follow me." Berto turned and walked away.

Norn turned around and waved to Arno, signaling it to follow behind him.

Along the way, Norn found a large rag by the roadside, shook off the dust and dead leaves, and draped it over Arno as cover.

Before long, the three arrived at the city wall of Miguang City.

The towering chalk walls gleamed softly in the moonlight. The city gates were closed, and several guards stood on the walls on both sides, their torches swaying in the night wind.

Berto stepped forward and explained the situation to the soldiers on the city wall, after which the soldiers quickly opened the door for them.

The night in Miguang City was very quiet. The streets were deserted, with only the occasional rat darting by and the distant barking of dogs. The houses along the roadside had their doors and windows closed, with only a few households still having their lights on.

They would occasionally encounter soldiers patrolling the streets, but they were all allowed to pass because of Berto.

After walking for about ten minutes, they arrived at the square where Norn and the children had been detained.

Berto suddenly stopped, turned around, and gave a meaningful smile: "Lord Norn, I'll leave you here. Have a safe journey."

Norn nodded with some confusion, feeling that Berto was acting strangely. His house was clearly quite a distance away, so why was he suddenly not taking him?

And why does that smile look even worse than a grimace? It's like it was forced out.

An unease crept into Norn's heart, and a terrifying thought quickly surfaced in his mind: Could he have been tricked?

Before Norn could react, Arno noticed something was wrong first.

Its massive body trembled involuntarily, its eyes fixed on the top of the chief's statue in the center of the square with immense fear.

An elderly man with white hair, wearing a brown robe, stood there.

The night wind ruffled the hem of his robes, and his silver beard and hair gleamed coldly in the moonlight. Dante looked down at them, his face still bearing that faint smile, which sent a chill down Norn's spine.

Looking around, one could see that demi-human soldiers had appeared out of nowhere at various alley entrances and streets, wielding weapons and completely surrounding the square.

Damn it! We've been tricked! Dante never left! And Mussolo didn't take Dante's words seriously at all!

Berto's whispered words to the patrolling soldiers weren't to let them pass, but to tell them to go and warn the soldiers to send reinforcements!

Norn whirled around, glaring fiercely at Berto standing in front of the soldier. "You bastard! How dare you lie to me!"

Berto removed his straw hat and pressed it to his chest, bowing deeply to Norn with an expression of profound sorrow. "This is the chieftain's order. There's no other way. If we don't capture you, the entire city of Miguang will be labeled as heretics!"

At this moment, a golden barrier began to spread outwards from the chief's statue, enveloping the entire square.

Dante landed steadily on the chieftain statue, holding the golden greatsword in his hand, his deep gaze sweeping over Norn.

"You're still alive! I knew the way you fell was weird, but this time I won't miss."

After saying that, he raised his hand and released a bolt of lightning. Arno quickly pulled Norn close and released a blood-red shield to block it.
