51. Belgreid
"Cut...cut off his hand!?"
Hopis's face turned pale instantly, and his crotch was soaked with urine.
"Father! Save me! Save me!"
Hopius desperately begged Torres for help, but Torres, who had just been sentenced to death, sat on the ground, oblivious to his son's pleas.
Realizing that his father could no longer stand up for him, Hopius suddenly felt an unprecedented fear.
Two attendants came to the gallery, drew their gleaming longswords, and walked toward Hopius and his companions.
"Don't joke around, Your Grace! I only stole a little money, it's not that serious... Norn, Mr. Norn! I was wrong, I'll give you the money..."
Hopius and his two henchmen were forced to the ground, crying and screaming, their tears flowing like a burst dam across the floor.
The servant moved swiftly, raising his sword and slashing down.
With a henchman's heart-wrenching scream, his right hand was chopped off.
The bleeding was stopped in time by the attendant's healing spell, and the bloody cut was instantly covered by new flesh.
This is where the advantages of being timid become apparent.
When Hopius saw the flowing blood and the severed hand on the ground, he fainted on the spot, thus avoiding the pain of losing his hand.
After cutting off the right hands of the three men, the servants supported the despondent Torres and led him out of the courtroom.
"Austin, you get back here right now, or I'll lock you up in solitary confinement for another month. Mr. Norn, come with me for a moment."
Karentin left with Austin, while Norn was summoned out by Duke William.
The two walked along a cobblestone path. William walked ahead with his hands behind his back, saying nothing. After a while, he spoke:
"I heard of someone with the same name as you in the capital before, but that guy was an assassin who tried to kill the king, and he's dead now."
Norn remained unfazed and replied, "It's normal for a few people to share the same name in such a big world, sir."
"That's possible, but I'm more inclined to believe that you are him."
William stopped and turned to look at Norn.
"Didn't you say that person was dead? How could it be me?"
"Because you give me a different feeling than ordinary people. Normally, ordinary people wouldn't be as calm as you when they see me. That waiter's reaction is normal."
"You've been to the capital, haven't you? You probably even dealt with dukes quite often, otherwise you wouldn't be so composed."
William's sharp gaze was fixed on Norn, who realized he could no longer hide the truth.
"Does the master intend to take me back to Baseron?" Norn became wary, and began to consider escaping.
However, it's highly likely that they won't escape it.
"Looks like I guessed right." William smiled. "Don't worry, I, William Scalander, am not one to forget kindness. You saved Louisa and Austin, so I won't take you back."
"I called you here to ask if there's anything you'd like. The adventurers who participated in rescuing Austin each received 800 gold coins. I wonder if you'd be interested in that reward?"
Norn breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this; they were indeed father and daughter, their words were almost identical.
"Thank you, Your Grace. Your daughter Louisa has already given me appropriate compensation, so please don't trouble yourself."
William: "I see. Then there's one more thing I'd like to ask you."
Norn: "Does the master want me to leave the Prontia region?"
William raised an eyebrow. "Luisa even told you this?"
Norn: "Yes, sir, she's worried that my presence here will become a weakness for you, giving the other dukes something to use against you. In fact, I was planning to leave today, but I was delayed by Toris's matter."
William: "So where are you planning to go?"
Norn: "The Demi-Human Federation, Louisa recommended me."
William: "Then let me remind you that although the relationship between the Demi-human Federation and the Kingdom of Eaton appears harmonious on the surface, there are extremists on both sides who advocate war. You should be careful of those demi-humans who are hostile to humans."
"Thank you for your guidance, sir. I will keep it in mind."
"Let's end this chat here. See you again sometime."

Belgreid is a border town located in the northern part of the Kingdom of Eton.
It is managed by the only duchess in the entire Kingdom of Eton: Melissa.
Due to the barren land and Melisandre's incompetent governance, the entire Belgreid became a gray area, where shady dealings such as human trafficking and smuggling occurred daily.
The people were living in hardship, and the pent-up resentment accumulated over the years was like several bundles of dry firewood. With the help of a few people with ulterior motives, the flames of resistance spread throughout the entire town.
On the ancient city walls of Belgreid, covered in greenery, a wooden stick extends from between the uneven battlements, with a few tufts of long brown hair tied together in a knot and hanging from the stick.
At the other end of the long hair was a highly decomposed head, half of which was dry flesh and the other half was exposed white bone, with countless white maggots crawling in and out of it.
A gust of wind blew by, making the head sway. With a tearing sound, the scalp, along with the long hair, was ripped off, and the head fell to the ground and shattered into pieces.
"Is that Duke Melisandre's head?" Louisa asked, holding up her binoculars.
"Yes, I heard that her other body parts were also hung on the city wall, but I don't know why they can't be found."
The one who answered was Darion, the current leader of the Sword Saints, who was enthusiastically using his telescope to search the city walls for Melisandre's other remains.
Just then, he saw two cavalrymen rush out of the gates of Belgreid and charge toward the forest where they were hiding.
These are the scouts they sent into the city to scout out the situation inside.
"How is it?" Darian asked, putting down his binoculars.
The two scouts' answers dampened Louisa and her companions' spirits.
Besides the rebels, there were also many ordinary people in the city. They had been imprisoned by the rebels, and many of them were followers of the Yaro religion, praying for the Holy Emperor's salvation.
Without these hostages, Louisa, with her strength, could have easily led her army into the city and wiped out the entire rebel force.
Of course, they could choose to ignore these hostages and treat everyone in the city as an enemy to be eliminated, but that would be inhumane and would also betray the believers who have taken the Holy Emperor as their faith and have been struggling to stay in the city.
"Fara and I will go into the city first. After we rescue all the hostages, I will cast a light spell into the sky, and then you can rush in," Louisa suggested.
"I'll go in with you," Darian said.
Louisa's pretty eyebrows furrowed slightly: "Are you worried about me?"
"How could that be? Those trash wouldn't even qualify to warm you up. I just want to contribute, otherwise it would make me, the leader, look like a freeloader."
"Alright, let's change our clothes and set off now." Louisa said, turning and getting into the carriage.
