58. Saved
"My God, so many blood crystals..."
Farai looked enviously at the bag full of blood-red liquid and muttered to himself.
Despite the excruciating pain from his severed hand, Dono tilted his head, trying to loosen the strap of the cloth bag. If he could manage to grab a blood crystal with his mouth, he would still have a sliver of hope.
Louisa saw through his thoughts, raised her hand, and struck with lightning, blasting the bag of blood crystals into dust.
"Surrender, release all the hostages, and I'll treat you..."
After seeing Dono's injuries, Louisa swallowed her words.
He was beyond saving; half of his body was completely burned through and destroyed, and most of his organs looked like burnt roast meat. Even Dante couldn't do anything about him in this state.
Dono didn't answer. When he saw that his source of power was gone, he froze for a moment, his ferocious expression gradually relaxed, and he died.
Farai looked at the pile of scattered crystal fragments on the ground with a heavy heart. He knew that Duke Angre had gone to great lengths to obtain a nearly used piece of blood crystal.
"Fara, what are you daydreaming about!" Louisa called out. "You immediately become invisible and go into the castle to find the hostages. Rescuing them shouldn't be a problem for you. Once the hostages are safe, find a window and cast a light spell upwards. You should know how to do that, right?"
Fala nodded slightly, extended his right hand, and a ball of light appeared in his palm, which exploded and emitted specks of light in all directions.
"Please, the magic of invisibility can only be achieved with black magic. Don't take what Dono said earlier to heart. If the kingdom wants to punish you, I'll protect you."
I'll protect you—
The three words were like a stimulant injected into Fale's veins, and for the first time, excitement appeared on his face, which had been paralyzed for a long time.
"Don't worry! I will definitely complete the mission!"
"Divine Speed"
Louisa cast a buff on Fara, "Go for it!"
Farai pointed forcefully at his gaunt face, and a plume of black smoke rose from his feet, engulfing his body and disappearing from sight.

In the library on the third floor of the castle, rows of ash wood bookshelves fell down like dominoes, scattering various books all over the floor.
This is where the rebels are holding hostages.
Most of those imprisoned were people who worked in the castle, including the head chef, head maid, and scholar, who held high positions in the castle, as well as some nameless soldiers who held faith and were determined not to defect to the enemy.
Compared to the horrific scene at the church, this place was closer to Donovan, so Donovan's order against killing hostages was more effective, and there were no cases of hostages being dragged out and tortured to death at will by the rebels.
But this doesn't mean these hostages can do whatever they want. It's not uncommon for them to be punched or groped by the rebels.
At this moment, all the hostages lay limply on the ground, leaning against the bookshelf.
Although the rebels did not deliberately torture them, they did not make things easy for them either.
According to Donovan's instructions, the rebels would only send five palm-sized pieces of black bread each day to keep them hungry but not starving.
At first, these people looked down on this lowly coarse food, throwing the bread out the window in an attempt to demonstrate their strong will through a hunger strike.
But after two days of hunger and seeing stars, they gave up. The head chef, who was the most robust, stepped in to stop the scramble for bread, and from then on, each person was only given a small piece of bread each day.
Prolonged hunger eroded their spirits; some defected to the enemy, while the rest struggled to survive.
The chef paced back and forth on the collapsed bookshelf, head down, searching for something among the piles of messy books.
He soon found his target—a book with a cowhide cover.
He picked it up with delight, roughly tore off the cover, cut it into small pieces with a knife, and put them in his mouth to chew.
"My dear Woody, the way you treat books breaks my heart."
The old scholar sat quietly on a pile of books, holding a copy of "The Social Formation of Subhumans" in his hands. Although his cheekbones were bulging from hunger, he was the most energetic among them and even had the energy to read.
Chef Woody scoffed at the old man, who reeked of pedantry, and offered him a piece of leather: "You're practically starving, what are you pretending for? Want some?"
The old scholar slowly shook his head. "Books are my friends. I cannot interfere with your actions, but I would never harm my friends."
His words drew everyone's attention: no one expected him to maintain such noble character under such circumstances; it was truly admirable.
There's a reason why the old scholar can maintain this state: usually, no one else comes to this library except him and a few cleaning servants, so it becomes a place where the servants usually hide stolen goods.
In a corner of the library, hidden by bookshelves, the old scholar discovered several silver coins and some dried cheese and jerky that his page had concealed.
This old man is very cunning. He comes over every night to steal food, and then acts like a saint in front of everyone during the day.
Perhaps the cheese had gone bad, for the old scholar suddenly felt a sharp pain in his stomach. He quickly tore off a few pieces of paper, crumpled them up, and shakily ran to a corner hidden by the bookshelf.
A crackling sound rang out, and you could tell how rare it was just by listening to the sound.
"This old man actually poops!?" Woody thought, covering his nose.
At that moment, the rebel guards at the door suddenly shouted, "What happened?! How did this guy die?"
"I don't know, I was just drinking, and then I suddenly collapsed!"
The rebels looked at the corpse on the ground; there was a clear knife wound in his chest, and blood was spreading rapidly on his clothes.
"Be careful! There's something nearby!"
No sooner had he finished speaking than another rebel fell to the ground.
His throat was slit, his hands gripped his neck tightly, and his mouth opened and closed as if he wanted to say something, but he died quickly.
Upon seeing this, the rebels panicked completely. With an unseen Grim Reaper nearby, who wouldn't be alarmed?
They quickly drew their knives and stood back to back, keeping watch on their surroundings.
"Is that the woman who broke into the castle? Wasn't she dealt with by Lord Dono?"
"Absolutely true! I secretly watched from the side. Lord Dono unleashed several bolts of lightning, even blasting open the wall. That woman definitely won't survive!"
"So what the hell is going on now?!"
Farai, who was hiding nearby, watched the rebels who had formed a circle around him. Knowing that he could not get close, he secretly condensed a fireball in his hand.
The rebels were standing very close together, and a single fireball set them all ablaze.
They wailed and rolled on the ground. Hearing the noise, the hostages in the library propped themselves up and went to the door to see what was happening.
Several charred corpses lay scattered outside the door, their bodies ablaze. A tall, thin, pale-skinned man emerged from the black smoke, a blood-stained dagger in his hand.
Fale felt a little awkward being stared at by so many people. He composed himself and said, "You, you are saved."
