61. Roadside inn
Seeing that the little thief beneath him was trying to escape, Norn raised his two hooves and pressed them firmly against the back of his hands.
Then Norn lowered his head, sticking out his long tongue to lick the back of the thief's head, and lifted his hind legs to gently hook the thief's waistband and slowly pull it down.
"Brother! Help me! This horse is pulling down my pants!"
His hands were pinned down by the horse's heavy body, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't break free. He could only desperately feel his buttocks gradually being exposed to the evening breeze.
The older brother was dumbfounded. He had indeed heard rumors of horses attacking humans when they were in heat, but the scene before him was obviously not that simple. After all, how could a horse take off a person's pants on its own initiative?
We can't worry about that anymore; if we keep watching, something terrible is bound to happen.
The eldest brother rushed forward to push the horse away, but was kicked away by Norn.
Norn had had his fill of fun and lifted his hoof to release his underlings.
Tears welled in the younger brother's eyes as he pulled up his pants and ran away, still feeling a lingering fear as he looked back at the weapon beneath the horse.
"Brother, let's not keep this horse. It's like a person; there's definitely something wrong with it!"
The older brother got up from the ground, still shaken, and looked at the horse. He knew that the horse had held back its strength after kicking him, otherwise he would have broken several bones.
"Let's go, let's go."
The two dusted themselves off and disappeared into the night in a disheveled state.
The next morning, Caesar stretched comfortably in his seat, glanced back at Norn who was fast asleep in the carriage, and reached for his waist to pick up the flask and take another swig.
But they found the wine jug on the ground, the bottle mouth open, and all the strong liquor inside had spilled out.
Xize picked it up regretfully, poured the remaining few drops into his mouth, and then continued to drive on his way, still feeling unsatisfied.
The dirt road was full of potholes, but the bumps did not disturb Norn's sound sleep at all.
After chasing away the two petty thieves, Norn retied the horse's reins and then emptied Caesar's jug of strong liquor.
To prevent others from taking advantage of him, Norn lit an oil lamp and stayed up all night, only going to sleep when the sun rose.
After sleeping for an unknown amount of time, a pair of furry hands gently woke Norn.
"Brother, you're sleeping so soundly, you can't even wake up with all this bumping in the car," Xize said, chewing on some jerky.
"I noticed you weren't awake, so I got something to eat. You don't mind, do you?"
Norn shook his head indifferently and looked at the sky outside the carriage.
The orange-yellow sun was mostly hidden in the woods, turning the horizon fiery red and dotting it with large patches of fiery clouds.
"Damn, did I sleep all day?" Norn suddenly felt a little lost.
Nishizawa nodded, then pointed to a hotel by the roadside:
"I'll sleep here tonight. I remember that for just two silver coins, they'll watch over the carriage for the night."
This hotel has no name, only four floors, and its wild and unkempt exterior suggests that the person who built it wasn't very professional.
Pushing open the greasy wooden door, the air, filled with the smell of damp wood, cheap alcohol, and barbecue, hits you.
There weren't many customers in the restaurant, only four tables occupied.
Three of the tables were occupied by ordinary travelers, while the remaining table was occupied by two soldiers in chainmail, who, judging from the insignia on their chests, were soldiers of the kingdom.
"How is it? This place is nice, isn't it? If we stayed in the camp, we'd still be eating that stew."
"Not bad, not bad, this boss's grilling skills are good too." With that, the soldier raised his glass and drank it all in one gulp, wiped the foamy mustache from his lips, stood up and said, "Let's go, it'll be bad if the captain finds out we ran out to eat alone."
The two walked to the bar, tossed down a few copper and silver coins, and left. The owner collected the coins from the counter, looked up, and saw Xize approaching. He raised his sparse eyebrows and asked, "What brings you here?"
"I've taken on a job; I need to send this guy to the Demi-human Federation."
When Norn saw the boss's stature—two heads taller than him, his arms as thick as logs, and the two giant axes hanging on the wooden wall behind the bar—he instantly understood why the boss dared to open a shop in this godforsaken place.
Xize took out two silver coins and placed them on the bar counter. "Help us keep an eye on the carriage, and feed the horses too."
The shopkeeper stuffed the silver coins into the filthy leather pocket on his stomach, then turned and shouted into the house, "Judy! Come out here for a second!"
The expected gray-haired rabbit-man did not appear; instead, a freckled female dwarf emerged from the house.
She was picking at her nose with one hand and rubbing away the sleep covering her eyelids with the other, clearly having just woken up.
The boss and she are of vastly different sizes; it's hard to imagine that they are actually a couple.
After he explained everything to Judy, Judy led Caesar out to settle the carriage and let Norn order something to eat.
The limited menu reminded Norn of the tavern he'd visited when he first arrived in Proncia; unlike that one, this place had a predominantly meat-based menu.
A glass of ale costs 5 copper coins, a piece of dark bread costs 2 copper coins, roast pork costs 1 silver and 50 copper coins, roast pork leg costs 4 silver coins, pork ribs cost 3 silver coins, and salad costs 30 copper coins.
Norn ordered everything on the menu, then booked two rooms and placed the room and meal fees on the counter.
The owner appreciated this kind of customer who paid first and then ate. After receiving the money, he went to the kitchen to start cooking.
A short while later, Xize returned, picked up the beer on the table, and took a big gulp.
Judging from its furrowed brow, this wine probably isn't very strong, far less potent than the strong liquor that got it drunk yesterday.
At this moment, a boy came out of the kitchen, looking at himself with two eyes, a silly grin on his face, and a green snot running rhythmically under his nose.
Following the owner's instructions, he served all the dishes Norn had ordered in order. The sight of the food reminded Norn of the deformed children on the eighth floor of the Rotten River Underground City.
"Is this their son?" Norn asked.
"How is that possible? Those two are the size of a bear and a rat, how could they have a son? This is an adopted one." Xize took a sip of wine. "Eat quickly, and then go get some sleep. We should be able to reach the Demi-Human Federation by tomorrow night at the latest."
Norn nodded, used the small knife stuck in the meat to cut off a piece and put it in his mouth.
Although it didn't look very appealing, it tasted almost exactly like the meat I had at "Meat Paradise" in Rose Town, but at a much lower price.
After dinner, Caesar and Norn went back to their rooms to sleep, and continued their journey early the next morning.
Whether it was something added to the hay fed to the horses yesterday or not, the horses pulled the cart with unusual energy today. They even left the forest and arrived at a vast grassland just as the sun was setting, before nightfall.
Caesar pointed to an abandoned windmill in the distance and said:
"That's Valshiri's windmill. Once you cross that, you'll be in the Demi-human Federation."
