93. Sarcoma
A dozen minutes later, the heavy door hinges groaned and the two massive oak doors slowly opened.
The candidates, still shaken, hurriedly left the church, disappearing into the sea of white faces below, eagerly awaiting their turn to watch the drama unfold.
Soon, these candidates, like sodium lumps thrown into water, stirred up the entire ocean into a boiling cauldron.
The news that the Pope had committed suicide and that a dark sorcerer had infiltrated the candidate ranks spread among the people and would soon reach the entire city.
After the last candidate left, the church doors slowly closed, and the messenger announced loudly that the initiation was suspended.
The brown-robed men in the church all looked solemn. After checking, there were no more black magicians among the remaining candidates. However, because the Pope had died, according to regulations, his body had to be kept in the church for three days before burial, so the canonization had to be postponed.
The most urgent task now is to figure out the motives of those dark sorcerers.
A few years ago, black magicians were a cult.
They worship an ancient evil god who was killed by the Holy Emperor, and they hate the Holy Emperor and the followers of Yaro who believe in Him, attempting to resurrect their god.
However, after the Black Hunt campaign led by the Theocracy, these sects have disappeared from the continent, leaving only a few individual users who can use Blood Crystals.
These individual black magic users simply rely on the magic of the blood crystals and have no hostility towards the church. Therefore, Dante and his companions suspect that these black magic users who have infiltrated the candidates are likely remnants of a cult.
"But what is their purpose? To kill the Emperor?" A middle-aged man in a brown robe couldn't hold back his words. Killing Dante was a huge joke in the Papacy.
"Absolutely not, they're just here to die."
Dante recalled the events of the previous night, when a red lightning bolt struck him while he was asleep.
Upon seeing that he had woken up, the dark mage showed no intention of fleeing and continued to attack him.
If he really wanted to kill himself, he wouldn't have used such a mindless method. What's even more puzzling is that the person they chose was actually one of the candidates who participated in the initiation ceremony that day.
"They are announcing to us that they have infiltrated the candidates, and that the Pope's suicide is probably part of their plan," Dante continued. "They are doing this to delay our canonization process and to keep us in Bathilon a little longer."
A man in a brown robe, sensing the conspiracy behind the plot, immediately stood up: "I'll inform the king and have him send men to investigate!"
Dante glanced back at the spot where the female dark sorceress had died and couldn't help but sigh, "She's really gotten senile. If she had been treated in time, maybe we could have gotten some information out of her."

Outside the city of Basel, the setting sun cast its last rays upon the wheat fields, turning the entire landscape a dark gold.
An unassuming manor sits at the end of a wheat field, its gray stone walls mostly covered by ivy, and a faded wooden sign hangs at the entrance with the name of a businessman on it.
From the outside, it looked like an ordinary country estate, with no proper guards at the gate and only a few old horses tied to stakes, heads bowed, grazing on the dry grass.
Angell rode in a carriage, with Falley driving ahead into the main house of the manor.
The two got out of the car, and Angre pushed open a creaky wooden door and went inside, with Fale following behind him.
The main house was empty; the fireplace was not lit, a thin layer of ash had accumulated on the windowsill, and the air was filled with the smell of decaying wood.
If an outsider were to barge in at this moment, they would probably assume that the manor had been uninhabited for a long time.
Angré went straight to a room and laboriously squatted down to try to lift a wooden board. When Fale saw this, he quickly went over to help.
Below the wooden planks is a set of stone steps. This was the cellar where the previous owner of the estate made wine. After the estate was bought by Angré, all the wine inside was moved out.
Falley, holding the fluorite candlestick, followed Angrey down the stone steps to a spacious cellar, where the air was still filled with the aroma of wine and decaying wood.
In the very center of the cellar was a heavy altar, upon which rested a fleshy tumor almost the size of a person.
The tumor was covered with wrinkles and protrusions, like a heart magnified countless times, or like an unformed fetus curled up in the womb, wriggling rhythmically in a dim cellar.
More importantly, the surface of the tumor was covered with blood crystals of all sizes, some glowing red, others already dim.
"Tsk, what's going on? These crystals are almost gone, why haven't you replaced them yet?" Angre looked at the tumor and frowned.
Soon after, figures clad in black robes emerged from the surrounding darkness.
"My lord, the blood crystal reserves are running low. It's better to let it go hungry than to run out of food all at once," a dark mage said to Angre.
"You don't need to worry about that. The next batch of blood crystals will arrive soon. Just put all the reserves in."
After Angre finished speaking, the dark mages turned around and brought over a bunch of blood crystals. They removed the grayish-white crystals from the tumor and replaced them with new ones.
Each time a needle is inserted, the sarcoma throbs violently, and a sudden burst of red light illuminates the faint silhouette of a fetus inside.
At that moment, a fleshy lump bulged out from under the tumor, and the next second it suddenly burst open, spraying a large amount of thick, foul-smelling black blood all over the black mage.
Judging from the dried black marks on the ground, this has happened many times before.
Angre pinched his nose and asked Falley beside him, "Can this method really summon an evil god?"
"My lord, it's not a summoning, but rather the creation of a physical body and the imbuing it with some of the power of the evil gods. Moreover, because the blood crystals we obtained are mixed, the body also contains the power of multiple evil gods."
"Wouldn't that be even better?"
"It's not as powerful as a simple evil god, but it should be more than enough to deal with Dante."
After listening, Angre nodded and said to the dark mages:
"I appreciate you all staying here for a while. Once the evil god is born, that emperor is killed, and the Kingdom of Eton is rid of the Yaro Cult, you will all be able to live openly in Baserone. At that time, I will arrange positions for you."
Upon hearing this, the dark mages became excited. "Please don't say that! Lord Angre! If it weren't for you, I would already be dead on the gallows!"
"We did all this to repay your life-saving grace! Our lives were given to us by you, and we are willing to die for you!"
……
Seeing the crowd's increasingly heated words, Angre raised his hand to calm them down.
"Alright, you guys do your job well. Let me know when you have any news. I've already put the food and water upstairs, remember to go get them."
After saying this, Angre turned his obese body and left the wine cellar alone.
