95. Peaceful Times
Three horse-drawn carriages moved slowly along the winding dirt road through the wheat field, with ripe wheat ears swaying in the afternoon breeze on both sides, resembling a golden sea.
The cart was piled with several barrels of wine and several bags of grain, and the goods were tied tightly with thick hemp ropes. From the outside, it looked like an ordinary caravan, but in reality, this was just their disguise.
They were dark mages sent by Angre to collect blood crystals, and the blood crystals they had bought at great expense were hidden in one of the carriages.
They weren't familiar with each other, and their only reason for being together was out of respect for Angre; therefore, no one spoke the entire way.
"Don't you think Lord Angre is making a mountain out of a molehill?"
Suddenly, someone asked, "Is it really necessary to go to such lengths to kill an old man? Building an altar, creating some kind of evil god's body, and making us risk our lives to buy blood crystals everywhere."
Dante was over a hundred years old; killing him would be a piece of cake. Just poison his wine, wouldn't it? No big deal.
"It's not that complicated! Just feed him a few more glasses of Dussé, and that should be enough to keep him going."
"Hehe, I have a plan. I'll slip some of those drugs that make pigs and cows give birth into his food, and then send a few women to his room. That'll exhaust him!"
"Hahahahaha!"
……
The man's words sparked a discussion among the crowd, and a few laughs filled the field.
"You guys," the man who had been silently driving the carriage all the way finally spoke, "are too young. You don't know how terrifying that old man is."
"Brother, you seem to know a lot about this. Can you tell me more?" One of them handed over a wine bag.
"Dante's body was much more fragile than you think. I heard before that he was already suffering from all sorts of illnesses two years ago, and he didn't have a single usable organ left."
"Then how come he's still alive?" Someone's curiosity was piqued, and they leaned forward.
"On his deathbed, he developed a spell called 'Peaceful Times.' The effect of this spell is that within a certain area around him, all factors that he subjectively perceives as 'harmful to him' will become ineffective."
"What do you mean?" These dark magicians were all orphans and had never received any education, so they found it difficult to understand the concept of "subjectivity."
"To give an example, if you stab me, and I don't want to be stabbed, then your knife won't be able to penetrate my body; if you poison me, and I don't want to be poisoned to death, then the poison won't work on me."
The group's eyes widened in disbelief. "My god, this is too... isn't this invincible?"
"But such powerful magic must consume a lot of mana, right? You mean he's been using this magic ever since that day!?"
The man nodded. "Dante's magical power is unfathomable. This magic has been on ever since he developed it, never turned off. Whether he is awake or asleep, whether he is eating or walking, this magic is always at work."
"Then what about the demon that Lord Angre is preparing? He can't do anything about it?"
"Maybe it will work? Why do you care so much? We'll just do it. What happens to that old geezer is none of our business."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a group of figures appeared in the wheat field not far ahead.
Someone squinted and looked; there were seven or eight cavalrymen, all dressed in gray-black iron armor.
"Oh no, it's the kingdom's patrolmen!"
"What are you afraid of? We're businessmen now, so hide yourselves well!"
"Halt!" the cavalry captain shouted, his voice rough and powerful. "Why are you coming here when there's a main road? Get out of the vehicle and let us inspect you!"
Everyone obediently got off the bus and stood by the roadside.
"Sirs, this is our first time here. We've always done business in the south, so we're unfamiliar with the area. We apologize for the inconvenience."
The man put on a businessman's usual smile and said.
The cavalry captain ignored his smile, glanced at the several carriages, and then waved to the soldiers behind him. "Check carefully, don't miss a single corner."
The soldiers immediately scattered; some climbed onto the carriage and rummaged through the sacks, some lifted the wine barrels to see what was inside, and some squatted down to inspect the bottom of the carriage.
The expressions on their faces remained unchanged, but their palms were already sweating.
The blood crystal was hidden in a compartment at the bottom of the carriage, covered with a thick layer of hay and planks, making it completely invisible from the outside.
But if the soldiers searched carefully enough, or happened to stab that spot with their knives...
"Captain, nothing unusual has been found." A soldier jumped down from the first carriage, holding a sack of wheat grains in his hand, which he rubbed and chewed.
"Me too, the second car is fine."
"A third one is fine too."
The cavalry captain's expression relaxed slightly after hearing this, and he nodded to Hogan. "Alright, let's go."
The man breathed a sigh of relief, his smile widening even further: "Gentlemen, you've worked hard. Would you like some wine? Our wine is delicious and sells very well!"
As they spoke, the two men unloaded a wooden barrel from the carriage, lifted the lid, and a rich aroma of wine filled the air. All the soldiers couldn't help but swallow hard when they smelled it.
"Don't try anything funny, the main road into the city is that way." The cavalry captain pointed in a direction, mounted his horse, and led the others away.
Before leaving, a cavalryman chuckled and crept up behind the two men carrying the wine barrel.
The two understood each other perfectly and immediately scooped a small spoonful and poured it into his mouth.
"Oh, it's so sweet and fragrant! Fill this jug up for me, how much?" The cavalryman praised the taste of the wine and took out a jug to ask.
"Brother, it's fate that we met. I'll give you this pot of wine."
"Garen! Are you fucking leaving or not! If you're not leaving, don't ever come back!"
Hearing the captain calling him, he forgot all about buying wine and quickly climbed onto his horse.
As he cracked the whip, he casually remarked, "Hey, I really envy you businessmen. You make so much money, a whole sack full of gold coins! If I had that much money, I would have been living a life of luxury long ago."
Upon hearing this, the leading man was suddenly startled.
What? A sack of gold coins?
Where would we get so many gold coins?
Lord Angre used all the money he gave us to buy blood crystals. Even if there were any left over, there wouldn't be a whole sack of them!
He hurriedly jumped onto the carriage that the cavalryman had just searched and searched inside, where he found a strangely bulging sack.
He drew his curved sword from his waist, slashed it open, and gleaming gold coins instantly flowed out.
"Who! Who did this!" The man angrily dragged out the sack and slammed it to the ground, spilling gold coins all over the floor, the golden light illuminating the astonished faces of everyone present.
