Chapter 9 Goodbye Gray
The Adventurers' Guild in Colin Town is located near the town's central square. It occupies a large area and is a two-story stone and wood building with a wild and untamed interior and exterior design.
There were no restrictions at the entrance, and the door was wide open. As soon as Lynn and his two companions stepped inside, they were immediately overwhelmed by the noise and heat of the crowd.
How lively!
Compared to the deserted Magic Association, this place was packed with people.
Lynn wasn't a stranger to this place, and she easily found her way to a counter.
The receptionist at this counter was a young woman with short hair. Because she was so busy, she could only take a break to eat the lunch that had been prepared in advance behind the counter.
At this moment, a sign that read "Temporarily Closed" was hanging on the platform, so there were relatively few adventurers gathered nearby.
She was eating a long loaf of bread with butter and jam when she caught a glimpse of Lynn out of the corner of her eye. Her eyes lit up immediately, and she quickly swallowed the food in her mouth, put away the rest of the bread, and took down the "Temporarily Closed" sign in front of her.
"Nina, I'm sorry, did I disturb your lunch?" Lynn said apologetically.
A young woman named Nina snorted shortly, sounding somewhat resentful, and said, "I work here, I don't deserve any luxuries. I'm lucky I'm not starving!"
Then, changing the subject, she flashed a professional smile. "Lynn, it's been a few days. Are you here to pick up a new assignment?"
When Lynn accepted the quest to clear the crystal monsters yesterday, Nina was on leave.
"No, I've already received a mission, but there's been a problem. I'm here to see Harold."
Nina blinked. "Looking for our vice president?" Her expression immediately tensed. "Has something serious happened?"
At this moment, Rumi, a staff member of the Magic Association, spoke up: "Mr. Barton sent us here. There's a problem with the mission your guild issued. The participants encountered an accident, and three mages are still missing."
Nina immediately looked at Lynn, and seeing Lynn nod affirmatively, she quickly stood up. "Please wait a moment."
After saying that, she put the "Temporarily Closed" sign back and turned to leave the counter.
Lynn saw her first run to another counter nearby and exchange a few words with her colleague, then lift her skirt and quickly run upstairs.
A short while later, a short but somewhat overweight middle-aged man came down with Nina.
So the vice president of the Adventurers' Guild is a halfling? That's quite rare. Halflings have a bad reputation and are rarely seen in official organizations.
"Haha, Mr. Rumi, long time no see. Has your salary gone up recently?" He greeted Rumi warmly, completely ignoring Lynn and Eli standing to the side.
Rumi arrogantly raised his chin and said somewhat impatiently, "I heard that orc who went on the mission is back? Where is he now?"
"Oh, yes, you want to ask him a question?" Harold looked up at him, perhaps because he often had to look up at others, the halfling's neck seemed a bit too long.
"He was injured, so I arranged for him to rest upstairs. Sigh, he's a three-star adventurer! How could such a powerful monster appear on the outskirts of the Whispering Forest?"
Harold looked distressed. "Those three little mages, they didn't come back. I'm afraid things aren't going well. Come, let me take you to see him now and ask him everything."
As he spoke, he waved for Rumi to follow, then turned and walked toward the stairs.
Lynn and Eli exchanged a glance and silently followed.
The wooden staircase was a bit old, but it was very clean. Once you reached the second floor, the noise from the lobby downstairs immediately subsided.
The second floor was divided into many rooms, with numerous branching corridors. Harold, though not tall, walked with the gait of a wind-up toy.
Lynn noticed that he walked in a rather peculiar way, tiptoeing like a cat without making a sound.
Is his profession a wanderer?
This positioning does fit the stereotype of halflings... Lynn thought to himself.
"This is the room. The door isn't locked. You two can chat. If you need anything, come to my office." He pointed to the other end of the corridor.
Seeing that the others had no objections, he turned and left.
Without hesitation, Rumi pushed open the door and went straight in.
"Who are you!?" A man's questioning voice immediately came from inside the room. Lynn and Eli followed and found Gray shirtless, applying medicine.
His dark green skin was covered with horrible scars, peeling and wrinkling like rubber scorched by flames.
His gaze swept past Rumi, who had barged in, and landed on Lynn and Eli's faces, a look of surprise immediately appearing on his ugly face.
"Eli, and you too... Thank goodness, you're both alright!"
His reaction was sincere and natural, and he seemed to genuinely care about them.
However, he is a three-star adventurer, at least a veteran warrior, so how could he have ended up in such a miserable state?
"Are these wounds caused by the Ulcer Vine?" Eli carefully stepped forward to examine Gray's injuries and asked uncertainly.
"The Ulcerated Vine is a three-star plant-type monster; I've only ever seen it in books..."
"That's right, this kind of monster is very cunning and difficult to deal with. I didn't expect to encounter it in the outer area."
As a three-star adventurer, Gray is qualified to venture into more dangerous areas, the territory of three-star monsters.
Lynn was still shaken by the fact that it was a three-star monster. That kind of thing was not something a mere apprentice mage like him could handle.
Only third-circle, no, even fourth-circle attack magic, could possibly inflict effective damage on it.
"Knock knock knock," came a knock on the door behind him. Lynn turned around and saw Nina walk in with a document in her hand.
"Mr. Rumi, this is the registration document for the 'Crystal Monster Removal Mission'." She left the document, glanced uneasily at Lynn, and turned to leave.
Rumi immediately began to examine the area, without deliberately obscuring it, so that Lynn and Eli could also see everything.
It's normal to record things on paper.
Two days ago, an adventurer team discovered a large number of crystal monsters parasitizing and breeding in a certain area. Since there was no spellcaster in the team, they reported it to the guild.
And Gray's reason for joining the team...
"Volunteers?" Rumi exclaimed shrilly. "The Adventurers' Guild has volunteers?"
This is unbelievable! Aren't adventurers supposed to be mercenaries or bounty hunters who specialize in fighting monsters? How can such a profession offer free services?
The three of them immediately looked at Gray.
The orc warrior, who could remain expressionless while applying medicine to the festering wounds on his skin, now looked utterly dejected.
"The volunteer system is specifically designed for people with messy resumes. As long as they accumulate enough points, they can restore their clean resumes."
"So, you've been to jail?" Rumi asked, frowning.
He asked too naturally; orcs are known for their bad temper, violence, and love of war, so fighting and committing crimes is perfectly normal for them.
Gray shook his head. "No, I have never broken any laws in this country before."
"Why is that?"
Upon hearing Rumi's interrogative tone, Gray abruptly raised his head, his ugly face contorted with fury in his human-like eyes.
"Because we are orcs."
