Chapter 26: Dark Web Bounty
"Mindy, come with me to exchange some money," Mark called Mindy over.
Mindy, who already knew the way well, asked, "Should we go to Old Dog's place again?"
Mark nodded: "Let's go to him."
Mark took three gold bars, and $3 should be enough for now. Once Jessica Jones is familiar with her strength, he will be able to exchange all the gold for gold at once.
If we switch now, although it's still a bit unsafe, at least it won't attract too much attention.
Hellhound Pawnshop.
Old Dog's eyes flashed with surprise when he saw Mark. Mark was no longer living in the previous rental house. He had originally thought that Mark had been arrested or was dead.
But I never expected to run into those two kids again today.
The old dog still wore that same fake, amiable smile: "What kind of service do you two require?"
"I'll exchange it for money." Mark tossed three gold bars onto the counter.
Old Dog nodded, then skillfully took out his tools to check if the gold bars were up to standard. After confirming that the gold bars were fine, Old Dog took out 30,000 old bills and handed them to Mark.
"This is the second time you've patronized my business, so I'll give you some extra information: you and three other children have bounties on your heads," the old dog reminded him with a smile.
He spoke up to warn them mainly because of the five gold bars, as he suspected that Mark and his group had other gold in their possession.
Mark nodded; he had expected this.
Just as the deal was finalized and Mark was about to leave, a notification sound suddenly rang out on Old Dog's tablet.
Old Dog habitually picked up the tablet and glanced at it, but in that one glance, his originally calm eyes were instantly filled with greed.
Watching Mark and Mindy's retreating figures, the old dog subtly reached his hand under the counter.
Just as he was about to pull out his shotgun, Mindy, with her keen senses, suddenly turned around and pointed two small submachine guns at Old Dog.
"Don't move! Your hands are definitely not as fast as my gun," Mindy warned coldly, looking both fierce and cute.
Mindy is indeed quite cute, but Old Dog knows who the other person is and how vicious they are.
Even someone as composed as him felt tense and terrified when a reincarnated demon pointed a gun at him.
"OK! Don't let your hands shake." Old Dog helplessly raised his hands, making a gesture of surrender.
Mindy threatened, "Get away from the counter, then walk out slowly."
The old dog slowly backed away, but just as he was about to reach the wall, he suddenly kicked the glass window of the counter, making it stand up.
At the same time, Mindy decisively pulled the trigger, and bullets poured out, all hitting the glass cabinet surface, but the glass surface was bulletproof.
Taking advantage of the moment, the old dog turned around and slipped into the room behind him.
Mindy's expression turned cold upon seeing this, but she didn't give chase. Instead, she said to Mark beside her, "Let's get out of here quickly."
With Mark, this burden, by her side, Mindy didn't dare to rashly pursue the old dog who had suddenly turned against her.
Mark nodded, then quickly fled with Mindy.
The old dog, leaning against the wall, panted heavily and muttered to itself, "Phew~ When you get old, even your reaction speed slows down."
He picked up the spray gun next to him, then checked the surveillance footage to see what was happening inside the store. After seeing Mark and the others escape, the angry old dog punched the wall next to him.
Like an old dog who had just missed out on a billion, he roared, "Fuck! So close! That 1000 million would have been mine!"
The two, who had been making their way through Hell's Kitchen, did not stop until they escaped.
Panting heavily, Mindy asked, puzzled, "Why did that old dog suddenly attack us?"
"It must be related to that message notification tone. He must have received some message, and it's about us," Mark guessed.
After resting for a while, Mark got up and said, "Let's go back and ask Skye."
Skye seemed to know that something had happened to them outside, so she waited at the door for them to return.
Seeing that the two were safe and sound, Skye, who had been anxious, breathed a sigh of relief.
Skye exclaimed with relief, "Thank God you're back."
Seeing this, Mark asked curiously, "Do you know about the dangers we encounter outside?"
Skye nodded and explained, "The entire dark web is in a frenzy right now. You and Mindy both have a $1000 million bounty on your head, and even Emma and Esther have a $100 million bounty on their heads."
After hearing Skye's explanation, Mark finally understood what had happened.
That old dog must have received a bounty from the dark web before he suddenly made his move. 1000 million is a number that's enough for him to abandon his empire and gamble on it.
"Is it Epostdan Investment Company?" Mark asked in return.
Skye shook her head and said, "It's a person named Gislan."
"That seems to be Apostdan Investment Company. Gislan is the vice president of Apostdan Investment Company, which is the company that kidnapped us before," Mark explained.
Skye cursed through gritted teeth, "It's outrageous! That crazy woman actually paid to assassinate a child."
Once Mindy, who was following behind, made sure there was no tail behind them, she urged, "Let's go inside."
After the group returned to the living room and sat down, Skye continued, "It seems you'll have to disguise yourselves when you go out from now on."
The water sprite chimed in from the side, "I think it's best not to go out."
Mark said helplessly, "But Emma still has to go to school."
"We need to find a way to get them to drop the bounty," Jessica Jones, sitting on the floor outside her room, added.
Mark nodded and looked at Skye, asking, "That's certainly a good idea. Skye, do you have any suggestions?"
"There's only one way to get the person to drop the bounty," Skye sighed, then said, "either have the person who posted the bounty withdraw it, or have them die. Once they're dead, the bounty is useless."
"Of course, that's on the premise that Gislan didn't hand over the money to the Dark Web for safekeeping. If Gislan has already given the money, then even if she dies, the bounty will still be there."
Skye said, "I can hack into the dark web's backend to see if they've chosen to use a hosting service."
"Then I'll have to trouble you."
Skye began trying to access the dark web backend, while the others waited for the results.
Time passed slowly.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
The sudden sound immediately put everyone in the room on alert.
Jessica Jones stood up and said firmly, "I'll go!"
She is the strongest fighter in the room, and she wants to protect Mark. Although she cannot control her power yet, if the person knocking on the door is there to kill Mark, then she will not need to control her power.
Mark nodded and whispered a reminder, "Be careful."
Jessica Jones confidently gave an OK sign, then strode towards the front door.
