Chapter 37 Turmoil
Just as Shi Geng was sighing, the convoy had already driven into the supply warehouse. The people from the supply department were already waiting there, and their eyes lit up instantly when they saw the supplies on the transport vehicles.
The mission to the ground is extremely dangerous. Usually, it is considered a blessing if the hunters can bring back a small amount of supplies safely. Such a large harvest is extremely rare. Roughly estimated, these supplies are enough for the lighthouse to operate stably for several months.
"Quickly, register the supplies and move them into the warehouse!"
The warehouse manager gave stern orders while hurriedly directing the civilians on the carts to unload and unload the supplies. His eyes were fixed on the goods, not looking away for a moment, for fear that someone might take the opportunity to steal even a single item.
"Hey! You commoner, what are you holding in your hand?"
The warehouse manager, Shangmin, suddenly shouted angrily to stop them, his gaze fixed on the spirit seed in Shi Geng's hand that was gleaming with an eerie light.
Shi Geng merely glanced at him indifferently, offering no further response. He casually tucked the Spirit Seed into his inner pocket, as if it were just an insignificant trinket.
Seeing that Shi Geng dared to ignore him, the upper-class citizen flew into a rage, rushed forward, pointed at his nose, and shouted, "Insolence! You lowly commoner, how dare you pretend not to hear me when I ask you a question? Hand over what's in your pocket for inspection right now!"
The dust people who were carrying supplies around froze in their tracks, looking at the upper-class person as if he were a fool who was courting death.
"Tsk tsk, this is going to be good."
"This guy's in big trouble, really in big trouble."
"I really hope 4066 will teach him a lesson. He bullies us all the time, and last time he deliberately deducted most of my contribution points."
The crowd of mortals whispered amongst themselves, their voices filled with schadenfreude.
They had personally witnessed 4066 single-handedly charging into the Devouring Beast horde and slaughtering them like mowing grass. This person dared to provoke him; he was simply asking for trouble.
Shi Geng slowly raised his eyes, his gaze as cold as ice: "It's none of your business."
"None of my business?"
The upper-class citizen seemed to have heard the biggest joke in the world, and shouted angrily, "All supplies and everything in this Lighthouse are under the Lighthouse's management! You, a mere mortal, taking unidentified items is a violation of the Lighthouse's laws! Hand them over!"
As he spoke, he stepped forward and reached out to press hard on Shi Geng's shoulder.
But as soon as he stretched out his wrist, it was firmly grabbed by another hand.
He was about to shout a reprimand when he turned around and saw who it was, and immediately froze: "Captain Mark! This mortal dared to violate the Lighthouse Laws, hoarding things and stealing..."
Before he could finish speaking, Mark interrupted him coldly, "That's enough. The inventory of supplies is the priority. I'll handle this."
Upon hearing this, the warehouse manager looked unwilling, but dared not disobey, and could only retreat to the side in a huff.
Mark then turned to Shi Geng, his eyes serious, and lowered his voice: "We're all from the Lighthouse, let's not cause any deaths."
In that brief moment, he clearly caught a fleeting glimpse of chilling killing intent emanating from Shi Gen.
Mark had no doubt that if he had arrived any later, the warehouse manager would already be a corpse.
"It's best to never let him appear in front of me again."
Shi Geng shrugged casually, stopped looking at anyone, and turned to walk straight out of the warehouse.
Before he could get very far, he bumped into a group of Lighthouse researchers in white lab coats, led by Dr. Carrie, the Lighthouse’s chief researcher.
"You must be Dustman 4066," Dr. Carrie said directly, her tone leaving no room for refusal. "Please come with us."
Her eyes behind her glasses were fixed on Shi Geng, her gaze burning with an almost frenzied intensity, as if she were examining a flawless, unique, and rare specimen, her greed and desire surging undisguisedly.
Shi Geng stopped in his tracks, looked up at Dr. Jia Li, his expression calm and unwavering.
Dr. Carrie stepped forward, blocking Shi Geng's path, her gaze sweeping over him, her eyes practically overflowing with fanaticism.
She had seen the report of this ground mission through some channel. It was about killing the Devouring Beast head-on with flesh and blood, and even without being hurt... This was simply the most perfect research material bestowed upon the Lighthouse by heaven.
The researchers behind her also showed excitement, their record boards and testing instruments ready to be used.
Shi Geng looked at the group of people in front of him who were treating him as an experimental subject, and a cold smile appeared on his lips.
"Go with you? No interest."
Dr. Carrie's smile faltered slightly, clearly not expecting a mortal to dare to refuse her so directly.
She pushed up her glasses, her tone turning cold and tinged with a hint of threat: "4066, I'm not asking for your opinion, this is an order. As a citizen of the Lighthouse, you must unconditionally accept the Lighthouse's arrangements."
Two fully armed city defense soldiers behind her immediately stepped forward, subtly forming an encirclement.
"stop!"
Mark's expression changed drastically. He quickly stepped in front of Shi Geng, his face ashen as he looked at Dr. Carrie: "Dr. Carrie, this is the territory of the Hunters. You've come here to demand our people without prior notification. Do you have any official orders from Lord Morgan?"
Mark knew very well that there were already spies from other departments planted within the Hunters team, and Shi Geng's power on the ground could not be hidden for long.
He originally planned to meet with Lord Morgan immediately after the supplies were inventoried and report the matter in detail.
Despite all his calculations, he hadn't expected Dr. Carrie to be so well-informed, leading her men directly to the supply warehouse, giving him no time to even think.
Dr. Carrie was questioned by Mark in public, but she showed no panic. Instead, she smiled calmly and said, "Captain Mark, I am also doing this for the future of the Lighthouse. The anomalies that have appeared on 4066 have far exceeded the scope of ordinary hunters. They are a crucial research sample for the Lighthouse."
She paused, her gaze passing over Mark and landing again on Shi Geng, filled with a determined fervor: "I will naturally explain to the city lord. Now, I must bring him back to the laboratory."
As soon as she finished speaking, the city defense soldiers behind her stepped forward again, intending to forcibly take Shi Geng away.
Mark's face darkened, and he immediately tightened his defenses. Ran Bing and the others behind him also stepped forward at the same time, confronting Jia Li's group.
"Dr. Carrie, without the city lord's order, no one can take anyone away from the hands of the Wasteland Hunters." Mark's voice was icy. "If you really want people, let the city lord give the order himself."
The atmosphere instantly became tense.
Shi Geng stood behind Mark, watching everything indifferently. If Mark couldn't stop it, he wouldn't mind letting the entire Dr. Carrie see what true power was.
"Cooperating with 4066 in the research is your only way out. Otherwise, I don't mind using some means."
Shi Geng's gaze swept over the two guards, then fell back on Dr. Carrie, his tone as indifferent as if he were discussing a trivial matter:
