Crazy Nezha

Chapter 12 The Old Artist

The flatbed truck transporting the dairy cows was driving slowly, waiting at a traffic light.

The celestial dog chased after the truck, turning back to shout, "The question isn't where to raise him now, it's whether Leopard Head can be brought back to life!"

"Come back!" Li Tianbao chased after him and flagged down a taxi by the roadside.

"Master, follow that truck carrying cattle ahead." Li Tianbao opened the back door and got in. "Harry, get in."

"Wait, there are still people!" Li Tianbao quickly added.

The driver's eyes narrowed as he saw in the rearview mirror a husky with its tongue lolling out, swerving its tail and braking suddenly on the road. The dog slid half a meter and ran towards the taxi.

"This dog?" The driver was startled, worried that the dog had defecated in his car, and quickly said, "I'm waiting for my shift change, you can take the next one."

Li Tianbao raised his voice, "Isn't the shift handover at 6 PM?!"

"Get in one of these taxis; there are plenty of them around here."

Refusing to pick up passengers, huh? I'll sue you if you push my luck!

"Sir, my dog is very smart, it won't pee in your car. Do me a favor, follow that truck in front, the one carrying dairy cows."

The celestial dog entered the car and barked, "That cow is so beautiful."

The driver hesitated; the big dog was already on board, and he really didn't want to take it.

Taxi drivers don't pick up three types of people: drunk idiots who are out late at night, people with big dogs, and mentally ill people.

The young man looked a bit irritable and reeked of alcohol, so as a seasoned taxi driver, he instinctively became wary.

Li Tianbao saw a silver, extended van with the slogan "[Xiao Li Helps]" on it drive past the window and stop next to the dairy cart at a red light.

"Xiao Li's Help" is a local lifestyle column in Xincheng, where reporter Xiao Li exposes social issues. It has always been popular with middle-aged and elderly viewers.

"I'm a reporter from Xincheng TV!" Li Tianbao pulled out his mental illness mask, waved the back of it, and said, "This is my press card, hurry up! We're doing an undercover investigation; there's something wrong with that cow!"

"My colleague's car is full!" Li Tianbao pointed ahead and added.

The driver looked surprised, but seeing the man's serious expression, he immediately started the car and quickly caught up with the truck in front.

Li Tianbao's heart pounded as he stared out the windshield. The cow there radiated a strange, milky-white light. Ordinary people couldn't see this light with their mortal eyes.

The driver asked, "Are you from the TV station? Isn't this a meat processing plant truck? What's the problem?"

"You'll see about this in the news in a few days."

The driver seemed to remember something and asked, "Could what that blogger from the agricultural research institute revealed before be true?"

Li Tianbao said with a serious expression, "It's true."

Xiaotian asked, "What's true?"

Li Tianbao patted the dog's head, shook his head gently, and gave Xiaotian a look that said, "I don't know what's going on either."

The driver angrily exclaimed, "Damn it, these heartless bastards actually sent a cow with foot-and-mouth disease to the meat processing plant?"

Li Tianbao was quite shocked, but remained calm and made no comment.

The bread cart with "[Xiao Li Helps]" printed on it turned a corner and entered a side road.

The driver asked, "Your TV station's car turned, which one are you following?"

Li Tianbao raised his hand, pretending to make a phone call, "Received! I'll go do an undercover investigation first!" He hummed a few times and then hung up.

"Master, you follow the oxcart, don't worry about my colleague."

"Okay." The driver was a little excited, feeling a strong sense of participation, as if he were carrying out a secret mission.

As the truck drove away from the city, a light drizzle slanted down, painting the sky and earth in a soft, gray hue.

The truck traveled to the northern suburbs, but instead of going to the meat processing plant, it arrived at a sausage processing workshop. The workshop had a light blue corrugated steel roof. The truck stopped at the entrance, and workers got out to unload cattle.

Taxis have stopped running. "I'm not going in. Journalists, expose them severely!"

Li Tianbao scanned the code to pay, and the man and his dog got out of the car and stood at the factory gate.

The driver rolled down his window and couldn't help but ask, "May I ask, why did you bring a dog with you on this undercover investigation?"

"That's a police dog," Li Tianbao answered without thinking. Suddenly realizing his answer was a bit abrupt, he quickly added, "Actually, I'm from the Municipal Public Security Bureau's Public Security Department, on secondment to the TV station. This case is a bit complicated."

The driver showed respect and handed over a business card, saying, "Give me a call if you need any help."

Li Tianbao took the business card, put it in his pocket, and said seriously, "The truth will soon be revealed. You can follow the local news recently, but don't talk about this with anyone else for now."

"Understood." The driver saluted and reluctantly drove away. Today had been a special experience for him.

A metal sign hangs at the entrance of the factory: Beijiao Xinyuan Meat Products Processing Workshop. Raindrops fall on the metal sign and slowly trickle down its edges.

Li Tianbao walked towards the factory building, with Xiaotianquan following behind. The gatekeeper was dozing off and didn't pay any attention to him.

The cement floor gleamed from the rain, and plastic buckets were neatly stacked in the corner.

A small truck with a blue license plate was parked under a makeshift rain shelter at the entrance of the workshop. Several workers were wearing dark blue overalls and waterproof rubber boots, with masks covering most of their faces.

The glowing cow was temporarily tethered in an open space next to the factory, getting soaked in the drizzle; it looked rather pitiful.

Inside the factory, a strong fragrance wafted out, machines hummed softly, and several workers were busy at their respective posts.

The Celestial Dog sniffed: "This artificial flavoring smells so strong. Let's buy some sausages later."

Li Tianbao walked up to the cow and asked in a low voice, "Brother Cow, can you hear me?"

The celestial dog stuck out its tongue, its eyes blazing with fury, and said, "This cow's udders are really fat."

The cow snorted and ignored him, the celestial dog barked twice, and the cow mooed once.

Li Tianbao asked, "Isn't this cow a spirit beast? It can't talk, and it doesn't seem to understand me either."

The Celestial Hound said, "Decades ago, a shackle of heaven and earth was added to the mortal world, forbidding..."

"Perfectly reasonable."

"How do I get the leopard's spirit into the cow's body?"

"The process is a bit complicated, and it definitely won't work here. Let's move the cow to a safe place first."

Just as Li Tianbao was pondering how to legally get rid of the cow, a voice rang in his ears. The gatekeeper, holding an umbrella, shouted, "Who are you looking for? Come over and register!"

Li Tianbao remained calm. The more critical the moment, the less he could afford to panic. After all, he was a veteran artist who had been acting in short dramas for more than half a year.

Li Tianbao said calmly, "Sir, are you selling your cows?"

The gatekeeper didn't understand; who came here to buy cattle? "This isn't my business. What do you want?"

"Buy dairy cows."

"No, no, not for sale." The old man looked disgusted. A stranger, with a dog, came to the sausage factory to buy dairy cows, which was really puzzling.

Li Tianbao glanced to the side and saw that the factory was situated on high ground. From this angle, he could see the highway in the distance, and the [Xiao Li Helps] bread truck was driving towards the factory.

Li Tianbao's face darkened, and he said indifferently, "I'm looking for your factory manager."

"Who are you? Dogs aren't allowed in the factory."

"Get your factory manager out here! I'm a reporter, my surname is Li! I'm here on behalf of the media to ask you: Do these cows have foot-and-mouth disease?"

Li Tianbao took out his phone, turned on the recording function, and solemnly said:

"Tomorrow on television, I will blur your face to preserve your image rights. Now, please answer me: does your factory use diseased cows to process sausages?!"

The old man stood there, stunned.

Li Tianbao said, "Please give an explanation to the people watching on television! Think carefully before you answer. You have the right to remain silent, or...?"

"Wait! Wait a minute!" The old man tried to reach out to block the camera, but then suddenly withdrew his hand. "What reporter are you from?"

Whether the cattle used in the factory are diseased or not, whether the procedures are legitimate or not, the gatekeeper has no idea! He doesn't care about his own business, he makes 1800 a month and is always laughing.

Li Tianbao remained calm, his eyes filled with a mixture of indignation, seriousness, arrogance, and madness.

He took out his mental illness certificate from his pocket, pressed his thumb on the upper part, and stretched it forward.

"I am a reporter from Xincheng TV! This is my press card."

The old gatekeeper craned his neck and squinted. His eyesight was failing, and a light drizzle was falling. Before he could see clearly, the other party took back his ID.

"Now, I'm taking this cow away to the relevant authorities for inspection." Li Tianbao's actions really intimidated the gatekeeper.

"There's no such thing as foot-and-mouth disease in China, is there? Wait a minute, I'll call my boss." After a pause, the old man chuckled and said, "Comrade reporter, come to the guardhouse to take shelter from the rain."
