Alien invasion? Luckily, I'm Superman.
Chapter 35 Iron Man
Su Mo felt there was nothing left to explore in this world. They had obtained Compound Five, the Soldier Boy was imprisoned by the Superhuman Management Bureau, the Vought Corporation was completely finished, Butcher and Becca were sunbathing on a beach, and Hughie and Starlight had started dating.
He did what he was supposed to do, and even what he shouldn't have done. So he took the complete formula for Compound Five and some samples from Hughie, said a brief goodbye to Starlight and Susan, and then opened the portal.
When Zhao returned to his home planet, the Earth Federation, he found Commander Zhao frowning in his office.
Su Mo placed the formula and sample of compound five on the table, gave a brief introduction, and then turned and left before the shocked Commander Zhao could react.
For the next month or so, Su Mo wandered around the Earth Federation.
He visited the city under reconstruction, the dismantling site of the captured alien frigate, and the newly established anti-gravity laboratory of the Federal Academy of Sciences.
Restoration efforts are in full swing around the world, but there are few recreational facilities available, and most cities are still clearing rubble.
Su Mo was a restless person, and after realizing that he couldn't be of much help by staying here, he opened the portal again.
It was the same black and gold portal again. After passing through it, Su Mo found himself in another bustling city. (The portal's design is a bit flawed, too overpowered, but I haven't figured out a solution yet. I'll ban it later.)
After Su Mo emerged from the portal, he immediately left the spot at super speed, while simultaneously activating his super hearing to observe his surroundings.
The sounds of car horns, street music, people talking, and the rumble of the subway rumbling underground. All the sounds merged into a familiar cacophony. He listened for a few seconds, then confirmed one thing.
Why is it New York again?
Su Mo was somewhat speechless. He flew into the air, looking down at this steel jungle. The Manhattan skyline was not much different from another world.
But unlike the building he'd seen in countless movies, this was a massive, streamlined building. At the very top of the building, four English letters were prominently displayed—"STARK".
That's right, this is Tony Stark's company building. He discovered it shortly after emerging from the portal.
This seems to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I just don't know which universe it is—the movie version, the comic book version, or some variant he's never heard of.
However, it seems to be a relatively safe universe. At least for now, there are no alien invasions on the streets, no Hulk smashing cars, and no Chitauri fleet flying in the sky.
Before Su Mo could finish thinking, a sharp whistling sound suddenly came from the distant sky.
Hundreds of missiles flew in from different directions, leaving white trails as they streaked across the New York skyline.
They were very fast; the explosions ripped through the glass curtain wall, and shards of glass cascaded down like a waterfall.
Immediately afterwards, commercial screens in every corner of the city were simultaneously blacked out.
The news, the weather forecast—all disappeared, replaced by a man's face. That face was enormous, taking up every inch of space on every screen in Times Square. Thick beard, fierce eyes.
"I am the Mandarin."
The sound emanated simultaneously from countless screens, echoing throughout the city.
"You think you're safe? You think your government can protect you? No. Nobody can protect you. These missiles today are just the beginning."
Holy crap, am I a jinx?
Su Mo cursed inwardly, but her body had already moved.
Super speed activated. The entire world froze almost instantly. The flames of the explosion were suspended in mid-air, shards of glass hung suspended in mid-air, and people's expressions were frozen between fear and bewilderment. Su Mo's figure moved through the frozen world like a silent bolt of lightning.
He appeared in front of an office building in Midtown Manhattan that had been hit.
A large crack had appeared in the building, and all the windows on the tenth floor and above were shattered, with flames licking out from the crack.
People were still running down the building, some cut by broken glass, others trampled in the shoving. Su Mo rushed in, carrying out a dozen people trapped in the stairwell, one in each arm, and placing them in a safe area across the street.
He appeared on a bridge tower in Brooklyn, he appeared near the explosion site in Central Park, and he appeared on the street next to Stark Tower.
He appeared countless times.
To the average person, it was just a matter of a moment. A black shadow flickered across the city, and then all the missiles were either intercepted, crushed, or moved to safe, open areas.
The people trapped in the rubble were carried out one by one and placed where ambulances could reach them.
Su Mo floated above Times Square and took a breath.
He didn't save everyone.
He couldn't stop several missiles. One landed on an old apartment building, causing half of the building to collapse and burying at least a dozen people underneath.
Another bullet hit a school bus that was in motion, and there were children on board.
Unlike in the movies, when Su Mo arrived, the car had already been blown up. He could only pull the children out one by one from the overturned shell. One child could not be saved.
Su Mo clenched his fist, his knuckles turning white.
The Mandarin's face was still on the giant screen in Times Square. He stopped his speech and stared at a particular image on the screen.
It seems the surveillance footage captured Su Mo rescuing the person. His expression shifted from composure to confusion, then to seriousness. The screen then returned to normal; after all, the missile had been intercepted—why embarrass himself further on screen?
The people rescued by Su Mo also realized that they were alright.
Just as everyone was feeling relieved yet confused, a few sharp-eyed people spotted Su Mo floating and immediately shouted, "A superhero! It's a superhero!"
Su Mo landed from the air, avoiding those gazes. On the rooftop, he stood with his hands in his pockets, looking down at the cheering crowd below, and remained silent for a few seconds.
He should leave. Not because he doesn't care about his reputation, but because the governments and military in Marvel are just brain-dead.
Red Hulk, Green Hulk, the mutant Sentinel program—it's all the Gutter military's mess, completely disregarding the consequences and arbitrarily arresting people for experiments. Although he's strong enough to not be afraid of those things, it's just too much trouble.
He only wants to do two things right now: improve his own strength and then take away the world's high technology or mysterious power. As for fame and making the news, forget about it.
Su Mo flew up from the rooftop and headed towards Stark Tower. He quickly went through the options of the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. in his mind.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury. All the different versions of Fury are petty and troublesome, and S.H.I.E.L.D. is entirely staffed by Hydra. If he went to S.H.I.E.L.D., the moment he stepped inside, his information would be sent to various Hydra branches. Too much trouble.
The Avengers. At least the members are relatively simple. Apart from Iron Man being a bit arrogant, Captain America being a bit stubborn, and Hawkeye and Black Widow being a bit too vigilant, the others are not difficult to get along with. Moreover, the Avengers are not like S.H.I.E.L.D., which has been infiltrated to the point of being riddled with spies.
After thinking it over, Su Mo decided to go to the Avengers. More specifically, he decided to go find Iron Man first.
The top floor of Stark Tower is Tony Stark's private office, with floor-to-ceiling windows and an open-plan design. Various holographic projection devices are placed on the desk, several abstract paintings hang on the wall, and there is a row of display cases for Iron Man armor in the corner.
When Su Mo flew in through the window, the office was empty. He looked around, then plopped down in Tony's swivel chair, crossed his legs, and placed his hands on his knees.
He avoided the sight of all the security personnel in the building, so they wouldn't see anything.
But he didn't hide from the surveillance cameras. He knew Tony Stark was a control freak, and every camera in his building was connected to Jarvis, who would report any unusual activity to him in real time. By now, Jarvis must have already noticed that there was an extra person in the CEO's office.
Su Mo leaned back in her chair, looked up at the camera in the corner of the ceiling, and a slight smile appeared on her lips.
Tony Stark should already be on his way.
Su Mo did this for a simple reason—efficiency, and to make a strong impression.
Efficiency. He didn't want to take things slowly. His time was precious, and he didn't need to prove himself to anyone. Approaching the core members of the Avengers directly was the fastest path. Besides, Su Mo was very interested in Tony's Arc Energy.
A show of force. Although Su Mo liked Iron Man in his previous life, that was only in the movies. In a real face-to-face conversation with Tony Stark, such an arrogant and conceited person would be difficult to communicate with.
Su Mo didn't want to listen to his nonsense. Giving him a hard time wouldn't change his arrogant personality, but it would at least make him speak more politely.
The office door was open, and a breeze blew in from the window. Su Mo sat in the swivel chair, waiting for Tony to return.
It didn't take long.
"Hello, Tony Stark."
