America, starting as a trainee police officer
Chapter 32 The Big Fish Emerges from the Water
A man wearing a silver bathrobe.
A woman with a stunning figure comparable to a supermodel, tanned skin, wearing a push-up bra, black lace panties, and black semi-transparent stockings, and also draped in a dark green silk robe, arrived at the villa's entrance.
The woman seemed quite relaxed.
The man, however, flew into a rage.
When he saw a group of police officers standing in front of his house, his first thought was to call his lawyer.
"Excuse me, sir."
Thomas went to deal with the homeowner.
Li Wei stood there watching as the police officer who took over Steve pressed his head down and put him into the back seat of the police car.
...
"Rookie, did you go to Beverly Hills last night?"
Inside the police car, Lopez gripped the steering wheel.
"Yeah, we caught a car thief."
"Well done. The Beverly precinct says that the petty thief, in order to avoid jail time, has turned against us and is cooperating with the District Attorney to take action against Raymond Calitley."
"If Raymond Calitley is caught, you'll get some credit."
Lopez was genuinely proud of Levi, feeling as if the soldier he had trained had become a general.
"Raymond Calitley?"
Li Wei didn't know this guy.
"Yes, they're British, operating around Long Beach. Their main businesses include, but are not limited to, human trafficking, car smuggling, drugs, and gun trafficking."
"Got a big fish, newbie. Any ideas?"
Li Wei now feels great admiration for Steve.
This Raymond sounds like someone you don't want to mess with.
Add to that the Brazilian drug lord Nando.
Steve really knows how to mess with dangerous people.
But that's normal; they're criminals. If you walk by the river long enough, you're bound to get your shoes wet.
"I don't have any ideas, but is the Beverly Hills precinct manpower sufficient? Shouldn't we set up a special task force?"
Upon hearing this, Lopez glanced at Levi and asked, "What, you want to join this task force?"
Li Wei nodded.
If he were to personally apprehend a criminal of Raymond's caliber, it would significantly impact his career evaluation, promotion potential, and overall rewards.
These are all good things.
"The case is currently still with the Beverly Field Office, but there are rumors that the FBI is preparing to intervene and set up a task force."
If there's a special task force, then there's an opportunity to intervene.
"Alright, let's get back to work. Don't be too eager for a promotion; don't forget you're still a newbie."
Lopez sensed Levi's desire for glory and offered a word of comfort.
A short while later, the police car stopped outside a house.
After getting out of the car, Lopez asked, "What was this police call about?"
Last night, the night shift patrol officers in Wilshire were quite ineffective, leaving a number of cases for Levi and his team to solve.
The case the two were about to handle was a remnant from last night.
"A woman called the police last night saying she was experiencing a domestic dispute."
"You know what those people on the night shift are like; they never bother with these kinds of cases."
Li Wei shrugged and muttered a complaint.
Before the two even reached the door, it opened, and a middle-aged woman with her son was about to leave.
"Good morning, Mrs. Michelle. I apologize for the delay in responding to the call."
Lopez took the initiative to step forward.
Hearing Lopez's words, Mrs. Michelle's son looked at Levi and Lopez, then at his mother: "What happened?"
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Michelle shook her head: "No, son, these two are your father's friends. You get in the car first. We'll take you straight to school later."
After getting her son into the car, Mrs. Michelle approached Levi and Lopez and said, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have called the police. It was a misunderstanding."
Lopez and Levi exchanged a glance, both sensing each other's unease.
"No, you didn't. Obviously something happened last night that made you pick up the phone and dial 911. What happened?"
Lopez, adjusting his belt, looked at Mrs. Michelle.
Mrs. Michelle looked at her son in the car, then at Lopez.
After a long pause, she sighed, "Logan went to his grandma's house across the street last night. I met up with a man at home, and when the mood was right, we got intimate."
"Just then, he suddenly returned, drunk."
"Him? Your husband?" Li Wei raised an eyebrow. As expected of an American, he was either in the process of making a date or on his way to one.
"Yep, but he quickly became my ex-husband, and I have filed for divorce."
She paused for a moment. Mrs. Michelle took a deep breath: "Usually, I can calm him down."
"But when he saw Mike, he pulled out his gun, smashed Mike's face with the butt of the gun, and kicked Mike, who was only wearing his underwear, out the door."
"Why did you say he was humiliated in the street?"
At this point, Lopez interrupted, "Did your husband hit you?"
Mrs. Michelle shook her head: "No, never. He just started acting crazy after I filed for divorce."
Meanwhile, Li Wei listened as Mrs. Michel described the matter casually from her own perspective.
My back feels a little cold.
I am determined that I will never get married, even if it means dying.
If she files for divorce, her husband will most likely have to pay hefty child support payments and give her a large portion of their assets.
This means her husband could go bankrupt at any time and end up homeless.
If it were Li Wei, he probably would have killed this woman on the spot.
"You told your son that we were his father's friends, and that your husband was also a policeman? And that his last name was Michelle?"
Upon hearing Lopez's question, the woman fell silent for a moment.
"Actually... my maiden name is Michelle. My husband's last name is Hawke."
As she spoke, Mrs. Michelle hesitated.
Upon hearing the name Hawke, Lopez's expression changed: "Your husband is Jeremy Hawke?"
"Yes, that's exactly why I said we shouldn't have called the police. He'll lose his job because of this case."
Michelle seemed to regret it at that moment.
It's unclear whether she regretted causing Hawke to lose his job or regretted affecting the child support she would receive from Hawke in the future.
"I understand that, but according to what you've said, this is a crime."
"Maliciously assaulting others or threatening their lives with firearms."
Lopez is also in a dilemma.
Jeremy Hawke, an elite instructor at the Police Academy, has a very good reputation in the police force.
Hawke was also the instructor for Levi, Lucy, and Nolan's class at the academy.
"You mean you have to arrest him?"
Upon hearing this, Lopez did not answer immediately. After thinking carefully for a while, he said, "This means we need to call our day patrol commander and ask him how to handle it."
Upon hearing this answer, Michelle's expression froze, and she seemed lost in thought.
...
Inside the 7-A-15 patrol car.
Nolan was at the wheel, on patrol.
"7-A-15, Emergency Case Dispatch. Call Superintendent Gray. Details in the car computer's inbox. Do not release this information."
"What does this mean?" Nolan looked at Bishop beside him, puzzled.
