America, starting as a trainee police officer

Chapter 33 Sharing the Same Misfortune

"This means things aren't going well," Bishop said, picking up his phone and dialing Gray's number.

"It's me, Bishop. What happened?"

The voice of Superintendent Gray came through the phone: "Put it on speakerphone and let Nolan join in."

Upon hearing this, Bishop looked at Nolan standing to the side.

I pressed the speakerphone button on my phone.

"Nolan, I heard you were with Jeremy Hawke last night?"

"Uh, yeah. I had a few drinks at a bar. What happened? Nothing serious, right?"

Nolan didn't quite understand why Gray brought up Jeremy.

"He might be in some trouble. No criminal charges have been filed against him yet; he had an argument with his wife. Do you know where he is?"

"I know where he lives."

"Very good, take him back to the police superintendent's office immediately."

"Yes, sir, we'll be right there." With that, Bishop hung up the phone.

"I knew something was wrong," Nolan sighed.

Among the students in Li Wei's cohort, Nolan had the best relationship with Hawke.

The two were about the same age and each had a son.

They had many common topics to discuss, compared to other younger trainees.

...

Hawke and Michelle are in the process of getting a divorce, even though the house and land were bought with Hawke's hard-earned money and he pays property taxes every year.

But if divorce gets involved, he'll most likely have to say goodbye to the house and land.

This has led to Hawke now living in a motel.

"I see him." Nolan drove slowly into the motel parking lot.

After parking the police car, Nolan and Bishop got out.

"Do you mind if I talk to him for a bit first? I could tell he seemed a little down last night. Let me talk to him and clear things up."

Nolan felt increasingly uncomfortable as he thought about it, recalling his own experience similar to Hawke's.

Originally, he was a minor construction contractor, equivalent to a foreman, a construction site boss, or a VIP at a foot massage parlor in China.

They could be considered to have some assets.

His divorce from his wife, coupled with the economic downturn in the United States in recent years, led Nolan to bankruptcy.

You could say he and Hawke shared a similar plight.

Bishop naturally agreed to Nolan's request.

"Okay, but he seemed to be in a hurry to leave."

Upon hearing this, Nolan didn't say anything and walked towards Hawke with Bishop.

"Hey, what brings you guys here?"

Hawke knew what was going on.

"The duty officer called me, mentioning a dispute from last night. What happened?"

"Law enforcement doesn't like me, that's all." Hawke shrugged.

"Okay, emmm, I heard this has something to do with Megan. Anyway, the superintendent sent us to pick you up."

Nolan walked up to Hawke.

"No need, I received his text message, I'll go over as soon as I have time." Hawke said, scratching his head, looking a little uncomfortable.

"Alright, but Hawke, the superintendent ordered us to pick you up." Nolan tried to persuade Hawke gently, seeing that he wasn't cooperating.

"What? I wasn't arrested, right?" Hawke shrugged and looked at Nolan.

"No, no, it's just that my superiors want to ask you something."

Not far away, the black woman Bishop was getting impatient watching the two big men dawdling around.

"Enough! Your superiors have ordered you to see the police superintendent immediately. Go now!"

Bishop is much tougher than Nolan.

Hearing this, Hawke raised an eyebrow: "Bishop, are we really going to make a scene like this? Playing the 'courtesy first, then force' game? Don't try that with me!"

Seeing that Hawke was a little angry, Nolan quickly tried to salvage the situation: "No, nobody's playing tricks on you, okay? Jeremy, we're just following orders."

"You've always taught me to face problems head-on, so let's face them together."

Compared to Bishop's pressing, Hawke was clearly more receptive to Nolan's perspective, which was also related to his private relationship with Nolan.

To be honest, not many people in the police station liked Bishop.

With a sigh, Hawke looked at Nolan. "You're right, I am... I am... sorry..."

"It's nothing," Nolan shook his head, indicating that it was nothing.

Hawke patted his pocket: "Wait here, I forgot my wallet, it's in the car. We'll leave after I get it."

After saying that, he walked towards the driver's seat of his pickup truck.

A short while later, when they heard the car start, Nolan and Bishop realized that Hawke had cheated them.

"Hey! Hawk! What are you doing!?"

"Hawk!"

"What are you doing?! Don't do anything stupid!?"

Hawke reversed the car, while Nolan and Bishop chased after him.

boom!

With a loud crash, the pickup truck's rear end slammed into the police car.

Hawke then shifted into drive and floored the gas pedal.

The car hurtled straight toward Bishop and Nolan, who instinctively swerved to the sides to avoid it.

This cleared the way for Hawke to escape.

Nolan and Bishop stared at each other, bewildered by the wrecked police car.

"From the moment we met, he was plotting how to get rid of us!"

...

Inside Zoe's office.

"Yes, sir, I understand. I've notified the Internal Affairs Department. I'll let you know immediately once he's taken to the police station. Okay, I understand. Okay."

knock knock.

Just as the phone call ended, Gray appeared.

After Zoe hung up the phone, she said, "The chief is very concerned about this matter and has instructed us to handle it as soon as possible. Don't alarm outsiders."

Gray didn't say anything, he just stood there.

Zoe quickly understood what he meant and shrugged: "After what happened today, do you still think it was a bad idea for me to prevent Hawke from joining the agency?"

"He's a capable veteran policeman, efficient and decisive! He's won forty-six awards! Forty-six!"

Gray felt somewhat indignant on Hawke's behalf.

"There are still twenty-one civil lawsuits to go!" Zoe emphasized.

"When you actively dedicate yourself to police work, civil litigation is inevitable!"

"Twenty-one times already?"

Zoe's words left Gray speechless for a moment.

Seeing that Gray remained silent, Zoe sighed, "Wade, listen, we've worked together for so many years, I know your basic principles: never let your officers become reckless brutes like Hawke, right?"

"Yes, I certainly won't let someone like that into my team."

To be honest, Gray is no match for Zoe.

He sighed. "Look, Hawke won't give up easily. He slipped away right under Bishop and Nolan's noses."

Upon hearing this news, Zoe lowered her head, somewhat angry: "Given his many years of contributions to the police department, I wanted to leave him some dignity, but he showed no appreciation whatsoever."

Just then, there was a knocking sound at the door.

It's Motta and Page.

"Come in," Zoe said, rubbing her forehead.

She felt completely overwhelmed.

"Hey, we just left the hospital. The guy Hawk beat up, Mike Gabriel, has a broken nose and a chipped tooth."

"The judge has issued an arrest warrant, which has been entered into the police system. Bail is not permitted."

Two pieces of bad news left Zoe speechless for a moment.
