Chapter 24: Engineering Magic
"Can I get a temporary badge here?" Einstein asked, pointing to Tesla. "My friend here just arrived at the Tower of Truth."
If there are three of them, it will be 3 PM in an hour. Actually, if they just want to find books, one person can go alone, but they are essentially there to learn, and all this expense will ultimately become knowledge in their minds.
"Outsider?" She hesitated for a moment, then took a silver badge from the drawer and placed it on the table. "That's fine. However, a temporary badge needs to be guaranteed by a full member, and the points will be deducted from your account."
"No problem." Einstein handed over his badge.
The middle-aged woman took the badge and tapped it with a slender crystal rod. The crystal rod lit up and emitted a soft "ding" sound.
"Identity confirmed: Albert Einstein. Sixth order."
She pushed the badge back, but couldn't help glancing at Tesla again.
"Excuse me, what's your name?"
"Tesla," the old man said, without giving his full name or any explanation.
The middle-aged woman wisely refrained from asking further questions; an elderly person of this age, especially a sixth-level friend, was generally not an ordinary person.
The three people turned and walked deeper into the corridor.
However, not long after they left, a magician dressed in black robes placed a book on the service counter.
"Eileen, I've come to return the book."
Eileen looked up, her smile deepening. "Professor Bourne, you finished reading so quickly?"
"Hmm," Byrne interrupted her. His gaze followed the three retreating figures in the distance, his brow furrowing slightly. "What did you just give them?"
"Oh." Eileen glanced in the direction of his gaze. "His Excellency Einstein brought an outsider with him, and I gave him a temporary badge."
"Outsiders?" Byrne frowned even more. "Where are they from?"
"This..." Eileen was taken aback. "It was brought by His Excellency Einstein."
"I'm not asking who brought him," Byrne turned to look at her, his voice low but carrying a sense of pressure. "I'm asking where he came in from?"
Eileen was stunned and didn't react for a moment.
"The Orloren won't arrive again for another ten days," Bourne said in a low voice. "The Tower of Truth forbids teleportation and flight magic. He also doesn't have permission to create barriers."
He paused. "So, how did he get in?"
Eileen's pupils suddenly contracted.
After a brief silence, she opened her mouth, as if to say, "Perhaps there's a problem with the barrier," but swallowed the words back. The barrier of the Tower of Truth was a legacy from the era of the Magic King, and it had been functioning for over a thousand years without ever malfunctioning.
It's not a problem with the barrier.
That's a human problem.
In other words, this magician named Einstein disregarded the barrier of the Tower of Truth, casually bringing in a person without even triggering an alarm.
If that's true...
The strength of this being...
"How is this possible?" Eileen asked incredulously. "How did he do that?"
Bourne didn't say anything, but simply turned and walked towards the East End...
......
Char and his group walked through the hall and into the East Wing.
They were clearly unaware of what had happened at the service desk.
When Char and his group arrived on the first day, they saw many non-magicians disembarking from the airship.
Therefore, the Tower of Truth is not a restricted area that only magicians inside the tower can enter. He felt that with Einstein's identity as a guarantee, there shouldn't be any problems.
The corridor narrowed, and the light dimmed. The kerosene lamps overhead were far apart.
The aisles between the bookshelves were so narrow that only one person could pass at a time, and the books on both sides were piled up from the floor to places that were out of reach.
They found the fourth district the woman had mentioned.
Einstein crouched down, his fingers tracing the spines of a row of books. Leather, cloth, and even metal covers. The titles were written in gold foil, some already blurred.
"Basic Structures", "Principles of Rune Combinations", "Magic Circuit Design"...
They each picked a book and sat down at a table and chairs in the corner.
Although it's called a corner, the view is actually quite good, offering a panoramic view of the entire reading area, which helps prevent people from eavesdropping on their conversations.
There weren't many people in the East District, so it was very quiet, with only the simple sound of turning pages.
Einstein and Tesla both had photographic memories, so they didn't need to borrow books, saving them some points.
Xia Yatiao's book mainly discusses the differences between each configuration.
In fact, the difference in configuration is not simply based on the size of the power.
Because as long as the magic output is large enough, it is possible to achieve the effect of "great force makes bricks fly," allowing some second-tier magic to cause the destructive power of third-tier magic—of course, there is also a certain upper limit.
If the input magic power exceeds this limit, the lower-level structure will collapse under the pressure, thereby damaging the sea of consciousness.
Second-order configurations are simple but stable "mini-programs" consisting of two or three runes, generally referred to as "spells".
The program is only responsible for "execution". For example, the "Burning Hand" is to "generate fire and then spray it out".
In addition to being composed of multiple "techniques", the third-order configuration will begin to include simple "conditional judgments".
Take, for example, the most basic third-order fireball spell: it contains the logic that "if it hits an object, it will release the restraint and release energy." This transforms it from a "flying torch" into a "trigger bomb."
"So if the hydrogen-oxygen sphere is to have a delayed detonation, then it has to involve the realm of third-order configurations." Xia closed the book and sighed. "It looks like this project will have to be postponed to the later stages before it can be completed."
Neither Einstein nor Tesla responded to him; they simply continued reading their books in silence, and time passed little by little.
"Clatter—"
Tesla closed the book.
"Go find the specific configuration of the Fireball spell," he said.
Xia was taken aback, but he still raised his hand and typed Fireball into the badge's configuration interface. Soon, the configuration price popped up, and he grinned as he looked at the price.
"One hundred points buys permanent access to the learning platform, and most importantly..." Xia looked at Einstein and Tesla, "...only I can see it."
Tesla frowned slightly. "Then why was that burning hand shown to others?"
"That's a configuration that's past its 100-year patent term," Einstein said, unsurprised. "It's a public patent."
"Why don't we study the second order first?" Xia said. "We're still a long way from the third order, so even if we bought the configuration diagram, it wouldn't be of much help."
"Haven't you realized it yet?" Tesla suddenly spoke, his voice not loud, but very clear.
Xia was taken aback. "What?"
"We've completed most of this magic," Tesla reminded him.
He didn't continue with the cryptic explanation, but simply said, "A second-tier configuration consists of a spell composed of two or three runes. A third-tier configuration consists of multiple spells."
"The process of manufacturing compressed hydrogen-oxygen spheres is essentially about breaking down an original three-dimensional configuration into several techniques and implementing them in batches."
He pointed to Einstein, "He used the electrolysis of water technique to produce hydrogen and oxygen."
He then looked at Char, "You used the Gathering and Compression Technique to gather and compress hydrogen and oxygen."
"Then give it stability and shape," Xia murmured softly.
"Now, all that's left is the last 'conditional check,'" Tesla said. "This 'third-order' check, composed of multiple 'second-order' checks, will then be implemented."
"But the runes needed for Tier 3 should be..." Xia paused.
He glanced at Einstein.
The bug, who had carved twenty-four runes in one night, sat right next to me.
He has whatever runes are needed for "conditional judgment".
"Then I'll put the ball in my storage space!" Xia murmured, his eyes growing brighter with each thought. "Time stands still inside, so I can store multiple balls. Then, in actual combat, I just need to 'shoot' them!"
"Is this magic?" Einstein asked with a smile.
“Of course it does.” Tesla raised an eyebrow. “It’s just that it’s called engineering magic.”
"Eight cubic meters of space can hold thousands of these things, what's the point of fighting then! Who can beat me?" Xia said excitedly.
"Have you forgotten something?" Tesla reminded him. "We haven't got the 'conditional judgment' working yet."
