Ice and Fire: Conquering the World Starting from the Wall
Chapter 21 The Protector of All Living Beings in Westeros
"Many free men are unwilling to leave their ancestral earthen houses or caves. May their gods protect them from the White Walkers who come to them while they sleep."
Mans made a mischievous praying gesture and then said:
"The good news is that the animals aren't that stupid; they're almost all fleeing towards the Great Wall. There are more than ten species of sheep and deer alone, and many other large prey are available for hunting. I've had a dedicated hunting team assembled, so food supplies are currently quite sufficient."
"Could we catch more and store them?"
Lynn asked, but Mans shook his head.
"The animals aren't stupid; they know to flee from dangerous places. They wouldn't willingly offer themselves up to us just to fill our stomachs, in order to escape the White Walkers."
"Free people are still gathering here, and as things stand, we can only maintain a balance at best."
Lynn thought about it and agreed.
"So when do you plan to launch your attack on the Great Wall?"
Mans replied without hesitation:
"Of course, we'll wait until you elect the new Magna."
"As I said yesterday, the plan will be difficult to implement without the Thane Warriors. No one else can take Castle Black in a short time. If even you fail, then we'll have to resort to brute force, but I'm afraid the White Walkers won't give us much time."
"In addition, a lot of inspections and patrols are needed along the Great Wall to figure out the crows' patrol patterns. They seem to have noticed something."
I had the raiding party increase the frequency of their harassment attacks to distract them, hoping this place will be exposed later.
Hearing this, Lynn couldn't help but glance at Mans and noticed that this man, who was only in his thirties, already had gray hair and faint wrinkles around his eyes.
A deserter from the Night's Watch, driven by his love of freedom, chose to travel with the wildlings. He rallied almost all the wildling tribes and marched south, but his true purpose was not to invade or obtain a crown. Rather, he sought refuge across the Wall to escape the threat of the White Walkers.
Now, he would rather give up the hard-won title of "King of the Frontier" than compromise the safety of his wife and children.
This makes his image more profound, far more complex than that of a simple intruder.
As the conversation drew to a close, Lynn began to make her own plans.
He asked softly:
"Besides the Thane, how many truly capable warriors are there among the Free People?"
Mans was somewhat surprised; he seemed to have never thought about this question before. He lowered his head and pondered for a while before managing to summarize:
"Free citizens are mostly fighters, or you could say they aren't; it's hard to define."
"By my own standards, Tormund's Redhall clan has two thousand warriors, including four or five hundred spearwomen, which is quite effective in battle."
"There are fewer than three hundred Titans left, almost to the point of extinction. They have difficulty conceiving, and women are never allowed to participate in battle. There are about one hundred male Titans, but I promise not to let them bleed unnecessarily, unless it is the most critical moment."
"The Hamma, the Raven Afin, the Weeping One, and the Bone King are all fierce raiders. They hate each other and only listen to me for survival."
"Hama is the absolute vanguard. I have placed all the cavalry under her command, totaling 500. The Raven Hunter, the Weeping One, and the Bone King each lead elite raider teams. The number of these teams is hard to say, as the personnel often change, but it is generally between 10 and 50 people."
"However, all three of them have tribes that are affiliated with them, and each of them can select about 500-800 able-bodied men."
Mans pondered for a moment, then continued:
"The walrus bone chariots of the Frozen Coast people can be of some use on snow or ice, but they are not reliable at other times; the Hardfoot people are short in stature, and although they are numerous, their combat effectiveness is worrying, with only about 3000 soldiers capable of fighting."
"The remaining Nightwalkers, the Glacier Clan, the Cave Dwellers, and many other strange clans from the depths of the Ghost Forest and the hidden valley of Frostfang are extremely difficult to communicate with. Some of them have even lost their language. I don't even know if they are the descendants of the ancestors."
"Some of them behave strangely, and some are extremely vicious. It's a miracle that they've kept quiet and haven't caused any trouble. I didn't expect them to be able to fight at all. But if needed, they could probably put together 1000 to 2000 men to make up the numbers."
After Mans finished assessing the strength of the free people, fearing that Lynn's understanding wasn't clear enough, he added:
"Adding the more than a thousand warriors of the Thern people, although the number sounds like a lot, it is still far from the size of the lord's army. Those who wear fur will never be a match for those who wear iron armor."
"I don't intend for them to fight against people in iron armor."
Lynn thought for a moment and decided to express his thoughts:
"What do you think about letting them guard the Great Wall?"
Mans was stunned by Lynn's suggestion, and for a moment he even looked a little confused.
"The Wall was built to defend against the White Walkers, not the Free People. It's time to restore it to its original purpose."
"Once we've taken the Wall, I'll have the maesters release ravens to all the lords of Westeros to announce the White Walkers' resurgence. Tell them that the Free Men... no, it is I—Lynn Morningstar—have taken over the Wall, and that they should send food and supplies."
Lynn felt that his approach was correct. Since there was internal discord among the living, he would find an external crisis to divert the conflict. This was something he was very familiar with; most people in China who had taken junior high school politics classes knew this tactic.
The White Walkers are a ready-made external conflict.
This was an angle no one had ever considered before. Mans' previous plans had only focused on robbing farmers and castles, without any long-term strategy.
Or perhaps he focused all his energy on attacking the Great Wall.
Mans recovered from his shock, shook his head, and thought Lynn's idea was somewhat naive.
"But they wouldn't believe it. For Southerners, the White Walkers were just ghost stories used to scare children. They had disappeared for thousands of years, and nobody believed they would really come back."
"Moreover, they are embroiled in the internal strife of the War of the Five Kings, with all the powers focused on the struggle for the Iron Throne, leaving them no time to attend to the 'ancient legends' on the outskirts of the Wall."
Lynn sighed softly:
"They're unwilling to give it to me? Fine, then I'll go get it myself."
"In my hometown, this is called 'having a just cause for action,' do you understand what that means?"
Mans nodded. Although languages and writing systems are different, the meanings they convey are the same.
"At that time, starting from the North, I will raise the banner in the name of 'Guardian of all living beings in Westeros' and levy the Guardian Tax on the nobles of the entire continent."
"If, when such an apocalyptic threat arrives, humanity is still killing each other for power and turning a blind eye to the real crisis, then don't blame me for 'pacifying the internal before resisting external aggression'."
Lynn translated a famous political maxim into Common Language once again.
